Full Moon in Aquarius, August 11, 2022: The Sturgeon Moon (VICE)

The sun applying to an opposition with Saturn in Aquarius, and the moon joining it, adds extra tension to the pressure to perform and live up to expectations. This full moon is very much about the balance between the self and the collective. Mercury makes a harmonious aspect (or applies to a trine) to the North Node, which can bode well for communication and the timing of discussions, and Venus separates from a trine to Neptune, adding a dash of glamor and romance! Each month, the sun and the moon stand opposite each other on the zodiac wheel, and this opposition is called the full moon. The full moon in Aquarius is like taking a break from a hot, sweaty dance party for a refreshing glass of ice water. This month’s full moon in Aquarius takes place on August 11, 2022, at 9:36 PM ET and is also known as the Sturgeon moon.

August full moon may be another big, bright supermoon. Here's ... (nj.com)

The "sturgeon moon" of August will be shining in the sky this week but will likely dampen the view of the Perseid meteor shower.

The August moon will officially reach its fullest phase at night — at 9:35 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time Thursday, Aug. 11, in the New York City region. The most common nickname of the August full moon is the “ sturgeon moon,” but some people call it the “ green corn moon” and the “grain moon,” according to the Farmers’ Almanac and the Old Farmer’s Almanac. As a result, the bright moonlight will cut down on the number of meteors that will be visible, experts say. Others say it will be just an ordinary full moon. Regardless of its classification, however, the August moon will officially be turning full Thursday night, Aug. 11, and will also be 100% full when it rises in the sky Friday night, Aug. 12. The full “sturgeon” moon of August 2022 will be glowing in the night sky this week, and it might be another big and bright supermoon, according to some astronomy experts.

Full Sturgeon Moon 2022: Meaning Behind August Supermoon (Newsweek)

This month's supermoon, the fourth and final one of 2022, will grace the skies on the night of August 11-12.

This year's Sturgeon Moon is considered to be a " supermoon." At these times, the side of the moon that faces toward us is fully illuminated, appearing like a perfect circle. This is a nonscientific term popularly used to describe a full moon that is close to its perigee—the point in the satellite's orbit when it is nearest to Earth. Other factors, such as pollution produced by paper mills, had a negative impact on the species. These fish were once plentiful and constituted an important part of the diet of the Indigenous peoples who inhabited the Great Lakes region. They are often English interpretations of words used in Indigenous languages.

Supermoon alert: The last supermoon of the year rises tonight! (Space.com)

August's full moon will occur tonight (Aug. 11) and is the last supermoon of the year. The dazzling Sturgeon supermoon will outshine many Perseid meteors.

We recommend the Celestron Astro Fi 102 (opens in new tab) as the top pick in our best beginner's telescope guide. According to NASA (opens in new tab) this lunar deception may be caused by the brain comparing the moon to nearby buildings or objects, or perhaps it is just wired to process things on the horizon as bigger than things in the sky. As such, it can be tricky to make out particular features on the lunar surface in detail due to the lack of shadows. Usually, observers in North America could expect to see between 50 and 60 meteors per hour however the full moon will reduce the visibility of meteors to about 10-20 per hour at most according to a statement from NASA (opens in new tab). A supermoon will appear as much as 30% brighter and 14% larger than usual, and while this may sound like a lot, it's very hard to spot such a difference with the naked eye. We have already witnessed three supermoons this year in May, June and July with August's supermoon wrapping things up with the last supermoon of the year.
