Beginner's tips for Cult of the Lamb (Polygon)

Cult of the Lamb can be tricky to start. Here are eight tips we picked up from the opening hours through this cult simulator and hack-and-slash roguelite.

One of the first upgrades you can buy for your cult is the Farming Bundle, which will help you create food for your followers. You can then turn that produce into cooked food for your cult and start the process over again. Your followers are living resources, like Pikmin, to do your bidding in the short time they have. Just be sure that you invest in the infrastructure of your cult according to its needs. As you complete more quests, you’ll gain followers outside your cult who will pledge their loyalty to you. There are plenty of ways and reasons to sacrifice cult members. Not only do many of these locations have quests for you to complete and items to purchase, some also have Devotion (XP for your cult) for you to collect. You’ll need to find and cook more food, and your cult will create even more mess. With so many different gameplay aspects, Cult of the Lamb has a lot for you to master. Both feed into each other, you can focus on the one you prefer to make your life easier. First you’ll be able to visit Ratau in his cabin, then the beach, and so on. Your end goal is to rescue The One Who Waits, a long-lost deity whose given you your powers.

Cult of the Lamb Review - IGN (IGN)

A wolf of a base-management game in the sheepish clothing of an action-roguelite.

You can revisit levels you’ve already beaten in an endless mode that continues to amp up the difficulty nicely if you want to play Cult of the Lamb closer to a more traditional roguelike, but there’s not really enough variety in its weapons, tarot cards, or straightforward map layouts to make me actually want to do much of that. There’s a ton to dig into here, and I enjoyed the balance that was managing the faith, hunger, cleanliness levels of my followers, but it also made me wish keeping track of them on an individual basis was easier. You even pick between one of four disconnected areas to fight through at the start of every run, with a boss waiting to be beaten at the end of each one in order to complete the story, which means Cult of the Lamb lacks that familiar roguelike tension of seeing how deep into the gauntlet you can manage to make it every time. Converting folk you find out in the field lets you put them to work gathering resources like wood and stone, worshiping your visage to generate a resource called devotion, or cleaning up the poop they’ll generously litter the edges of your camp with. Cult of the Lamb puts you in the fluffy hooves of a cult leader newly resurrected by an imprisoned deity called The One Who Waits. Now it’s up to you to free your master by recruiting new followers to the flock, building a base for them to live in, and going on bloody crusades against the otherworldly entities that trapped him. This is a true wolf of a base-management game in the sheepish clothing of an action-roguelite, but it balances that unexpected mix of genres with grace.

Cult Of The Lamb review: an adorably twisted cult management game (Rock Paper Shotgun)

Ritual combat of the elderly is a staple of CultPaperShotgun, and as Alice0 delivers the final blow to an ailing Liam, cries of euphoria reverberate about the ...

Cult Of The Lamb absolutely oozes charisma and excitement at the tiniest opportunity, and it's hard not to be taken in by the loving attention to detail on display while you're playing. As you hold down the button, the screen starts to shake, a crescendo builds, and a bell tolls at the moment of completion. The combat aspect may be a little lacking in content, but it's good enough to hold its own and keep me entertained between periods spent carefully taking care of my growing legion of adoring followers. Even something as menial as blessing a follower or pressing a button to declare a new doctrine feels like a MOMENT thanks to all the effects and pomp and character. I also need to spend a bit of time extolling the wonderful soundtrack by Narayana Johnson, aka River Boy. It's an unlikely pairing of jovial cottagecore and otherworldly danger, and every second of it ties in flawlessly with what's happening at the time in-game. But thanks to a perk I'd selected earlier in the game, I could choose to sacrifice one of my followers back home in order to come back to life. Followers age and die in Cult Of The Lamb, and that presents problems such as bodies that need burying before they rot and make everyone sick, and also the sadness of other followers lowering the amount of Faith in the cult as a whole. It lacks a little of the precision and polish of those two titles, but the fact that it is even comparable to two of the best combat systems in the history of roguelites is pretty good going. I'm a big fan of the way the game unfolds and expands over time. I, the Lamb, the glorious leader of our cult, the holy vessel of Death itself, and the sworn enemy of the Bishops of the Old Faith that are destined soon to die by my blade? Over the course of a run you'll also find tarot cards, much like Binding Of Isaac, which give you bonuses like giving you extra hearts, making your dodge-roll deal damage to nearby enemies, and so on. A bright sun heralds the start of day 37 for CultPaperShotgun. Katharine wakes up and immediately sets to work cleaning up the mountains of poop and vomit puddles left over from the previous night's revelries.

How does Cult of the Lamb run on Steam Deck? (GodisaGeek.com)

While reviewing Cult of the Lamb, we made sure to check out how it runs on Steam Deck and were pleasantly surprsed by our findings.

Otherwise, it’s one of those games you play and forget you’re even using a handheld gaming PC. I can’t remember the last time a game held my attention quite so tightly as Cult of the Lamb, so get yourself indoctrinated and give up all your worldly possessions today.”. The gameplay loop of upgrading your community then switching it up to traipse through a dangerous jungle is sublime, and the way the village provides upgrades for the dungeon crawling and vice versa is just magical.

Cult of the Lamb review: Midsommar meets Animal Crossing | Digital ... (Digital Trends)

Though its roguelite component is lacking, Cult of the Lamb excels as a darkly comedic management sim.

Cult of the Lamb excels at delivering a multilayered management sim that uses its cult premise as much more than a twisted gimmick. The cute visuals make for some fun dissonance when performing a blood sacrifice, but I wish the experience had more teeth as a work of satire. The central story heads toward a pretty obvious conclusion from the get-go, one that almost absolves players of any sins they’ve committed along the way. Cult of the Lamb’s most immediately notable feature is its cartoon art style, which almost makes it look like a grown-up flash game. For something that looks like a cartoon gimmick, Cult of the Lamb surprisingly stands hoof-to-hoof with more “serious” systems-heavy games like Frostpunk. That makes the game much more friendly for people who hate bashing their head against a wall, but it’s lacking a good counterbalance to keep runs interesting. For instance, much of the thrill of games like Hades comes from experimenting with builds each run. That’s not even the bottom of the barrel. What’s especially impressive is that this is only one layer of the management sim. In Cult of the Lamb, players take control of an innocent lamb who gets suckered into running a cult for a chained god. But like my uneven stint as a leader, it struggles to fully pull off the complex genre juggling act it sets out to achieve. For a good chunk of my Cult of the Lamb playthrough, I was a perfect leader.

Review: Cult of the Lamb (Destructoid)

I'm a big fan of roguelite action games and city builders, but even if you're on the mild side, Cult of the Lamb is a winning combo.

I’m a big fan of roguelite action games and city builders, but even if you’re on the mild side, Cult of the Lamb is a winning combo. Cult of the Lamb isn’t a game meant to be played endlessly, and it is enjoyable as is, especially given how ridiculously fast the runs end up feeling. Despite the morbid subject matter and potential for player fatigue, this is such an easy game to recommend to a wide audience. It’s often a race to take out the highest-priority threats and clear some destructible bits of the environment so you have more room to work with; the skeletons, spiders, assassins, and other threats can easily overwhelm. I appreciate how streamlined the action is, but by the end, especially factoring in extra runs for resources and optional cosmetic unlocks, I had my fill of the combat. Again, for all of the elements that come into play, Cult of the Lamb presents everything in a digestible way. Even with each area’s enemies warming you up to the mini-boss, and the mini-bosses telegraphing what to expect from the actual biome boss, the bishop fights require focus and fast reflexes. And when it’s not — when a bishop curses your flock with sickness and they poop all over town while you’re dungeon-running, or someone dies of old age and you forget to take care of the body, or a dissenting snake in the grass emerges and you neglect to imprison and “re-educate them” — well, misfortune is part of the fun. Aside from gaining more raw attack power and weapon types in the randomized pool (my favorite is a massive slow-hitting hammer), you can preach to get a health boost or finish certain multi-part NPC quests to earn alternate fleeces that suit different playstyles. And then there are unlockable rituals (that run on a cooldown) and doctrines (that are permanent for the playthrough). Rituals can restore everyone’s faith in you, raise the dead, or satisfy empty stomachs, among many other dark “miracles.” You can even get married! Early on, there’s little to manage, but you will have to get your hands dirty chopping trees or mining; further along, with many more cultists at your disposal, they’ll handle most of the cult’s busywork while you focus on the big-picture expansion and seedy decision-making. If you’re not careful, this is the kind of game that can make hours suddenly vanish.

Beginner's Guide - Basics and Starting Tips - Cult of the Lamb Wiki ... (IGN)

Each crusade begins and ends with a series of random rooms full of enemies, and you'll be able to pick a random weapon and magic curse at the start. In between ...

After defeating one, you can choose to return to your base or keep going with another randomly generated crusade back to back - or you can destroy one of the bishop’s statues to find a teleport pad to face them again. The more you unlock, the more you can swap between as you wait for one to refresh, and the more options you’ll have to remedy specific problems. Should you fall in battle, you’ll be resurrected back home but lose much of the items you gained, and your followers will lose faith. You can also equip different kinds of attire from quest rewards - but be prepared to play by some different rules to make them work in your favor. The highlight of your cult is definitely the Temple. It’s where you can lead your flock into and perform a variety of actions that can help you - both around the site, and while you’re off crusading. - As you progress further into the game, basic lumber and stone won’t be able to cut it - but you can build a Refinery to consecrate materials into better versions. Not only does it let you grow in power for Crusading, but it will also raise the faith of your followers, and increase their loyalty by a bit, too. - Soon into your cult building, you can learn how to build a Farm Plot. These are essential for keeping your loyalists fed, but you’ll need to find some seeds to start, then make sure each seed is planted and watered. The lifeblood of your Cult (whether you like it or not), Followers serve many purposes, but come with their own set of rules you’ll need to know if you want to get the most out of them. A level up will give you a burst of Devotion - but higher level Followers will also perform better at certain tasks you can assign them to. When you first begin in Cult of the Lamb, you won’t have much to work with, but things will only get bigger and more complex as you play. Cult of the Lamb is essentially a mix of two game genres that intertwine so that you’ll often be dividing your time equally between the two - and for good reason.

Cult Of The Lamb: 8 Best Buildings (TheGamer)

From economy to faith to hygiene, your Followers in Cult Of The Lamb have many needs. Use these buildings to keep them well-fed, healthy, and loyal.

Since it's a fairly labor-intensive process, it's worth having at least two Followers assigned to the task in case one dies or falls ill. Just remember that the possessed Followers cannot work, pray, or take part in services until they are released at the end of your next crusade, and that they will probably suffer from Exhaustion afterward. This trio of buildings lets you fully automate food production in your village, saving yourself huge amounts of time by letting your Followers sow, tend, and harvest crops. You also need to maintain a large population to open the gates to different realms of the Old Faith, where more resources and bosses can be found. Usually this takes the form of seeking out and collecting items on your behalf. While a simple Body Pit or a trip to the Cooking Pot is all that's strictly necessary when a Follower departs the mortal plane, constructing proper Graves can help keep your surviving cultists in line.

Lead the Cutest Cult Ever in the Excellent Cult of the Lamb (Paste Magazine)

Emissary to a fallen god who leads a bloody crusade against the ones who deposed them, all the while “building the faith” by forming and maintaining a cult!

And for that frankness alone, Cult of the Lamb is more than deserving of high marks. Cult of the Lamb doesn’t really moralize beyond that, and I actually think it’s a better game for not muddying the water reaching for something greater or profound. It’s garish stuff, but such is the way of cults, and the game at least provides flexibility and fun while painting an equally gruesome and wholesome picture of it all. Cult of the Lamb finds great success with this mixture, making for an utter delight of a journey into the heart of darkness. Mechanically Cult of the Lamb combines a couple of seemingly disparate genres. From the very moment Cult of the Lamb begins, players embark on a rollicking, deceptively cute, but ultimately sinister journey through the lands of the Old Faith, and it never lets up.

Cult Of The Lamb: Beginner Tips & Tricks (TheGamer)

From combat strategies to learning how to manage your Followers, these tips will help you get started in Cult Of The Lamb.

Most of all, sacrificing Followers is essential, whether you're offering them to The One That Waits or giving them over to eldritch beings in exchange for boons. Many players (myself included) start Cult Of The Lamb thinking they're going to be a "good" cult leader. At minimum, you should find and speak with Clauneck on each map to get a free Tarot Card draw, and (later in the game) pay for an extra while you're there. While most extra rooms contain enemies or lesser treasures, you'll occasionally be blessed with better equipment or a free set of Tarot Cards. This won't happen every time, but it's just frequent enough to always make it worth your time to check. At the end of the day, there are only two ways to avoid damage in Cult Of The Lamb. The first is to simply kill your opponents before they strike. Try to do all of your Blessings before giving the day's Sermon, as any Followers that level up from your Blessing will provide more power during their Temple visit.

Cult Of The Lamb: 10 Tips And Tricks To Be The Best Leader Possible (Game Informer)

If you fail to keep them fed and happy, or if you decline their sub-quests too much, or even simply neglect to clean up their poop, their faith will drop. Any ...

Weigh your options before deciding what you want to do, and don’t feel like you need to do what your followers ask of you every time. I mention this because many of your followers will ask you to do tasks for them to raise their loyalty to you. You need to upgrade as much as you can as fast as you can before focusing on making your cult look nice aesthetically. One of my biggest critiques with Cult of the Lamb ( you can read my review here) is that it features many cosmetic items for your cult compound but rarely gives you the time in the game’s opening hours to focus on them. It’s good fun to name your followers after people you know, pets, or characters from your favorite movie or show, and it’s just as easy to spend time designing them to be awesome. You’ll want to focus on getting proficient and comfortable with each because there’s a good chance you’ll reach the dungeon’s boss without your favorite weapon in hand. As someone who did this (blade for life), don’t. You will run through the game’s randomly-arranged dungeons many times in Cult of the Lamb, and the starting weapon and the random weapons you might find later in the dungeon will vary. I spent a small portion of my time in Cult of the Lamb ignoring gifts, and I regret it because gifts made cult life so much easier for me. You can perform many faith-building systems in Cult of the Lamb once a day – sermons, inspirations, and more – and you’ll want to get into the habit of ensuring you complete them each day. As such, be sure you have followers in the lumber yards and stone mines collecting these resources for you at all times. You can also preach sermons in your temple daily, which is essential to making your lamb stronger for their upcoming crusade runs through the game’s four main dungeons. Your followers’ faith in your cult drives everything in Cult of the Lamb. If you fail to keep them fed and happy, or if you decline their sub-quests too much, or even simply neglect to clean up their poop, their faith will drop.

If you have a dark sense of humor, “Cult of the Lamb” might scratch that itch. You assign tasks to your followers to gather resources and maintain the property, similar to how you would with the Harvest Sprites in Harvest Moon games. Perform rituals using the bones from the desecrated bodies of your slain enemies to make your followers work faster or starve for days without losing faith. Slaying demons in the lands of the Old Faith feels like fighting on a slip and slide. A lack of variety in both level and enemy design makes its dungeon-crawling portions a slog. Four eldritch deities of something called the “Old Faith” order their followers to execute you, speaking cryptically about preventing a prophecy.

Hopefully this Cult of the Lamb Followers guide helps you make the most of your growing flock. We've also got plenty of other guides for you to peruse, including ones on how to craft, how to farm and what the best weapons are: Positive traits can also be purchased with Faith levels you earn as you hold Sermons, erasing negative traits and making it easier to keep your Followers happy. However, if you're in a particularly rough spot with preventing an uprising, you can also target specific unhappy Followers and drive up their Faith. This is done by Issuing a command to them and then selecting any of the options that are meant to make them happy. Failing to do so can lead to Followers doubting you and attempting to convince others to leave your cult. This is because even if you take care of all your flock perfectly in Cult of the Lamb, Followers will still die of old age. This is due to Follower Traits, which act as buffs and debuffs your Followers carry at any given time. This means unlocking the Outhouse and Janitorial Station as quickly as possible via the Divine Inspiration menu, which you access after accruing Divine Inspiration points from your followers worshiping you. Helob will also appear near the gates to the game's different zones after you defeat the first of the five main bosses. Whether you don’t want to deal with their dissension, old age, or just want to harvest some meat - know that other Followers tend to freak out. - Once you defeat the boss of a region, you can still refight them whenver you like. - Little bits of Faith go a long way to keep your Followers happy, especially early on when you don’t have too many options to raise it up when people start dissenting. - The chests you find when crusading can often hold blueprints or follower skins to add to your collection. You can still build, mine, or chop things yourself if you need to - just be wary of accidentally hosting an event in your Temple, as your Followers will get mad if they are woken up. You can also catch fireflies for a bit of Devotion. You can also find them in chests, and in random rooms. You should probably aim to clear a crusade in around 8-12 minutes, and make sure your followers are well fed and happy before leaving. If you use the Crown Ability to warp out, you'll only lose a small amount. Diseased Hearts are similar to Blue Hearts, but they'll also damage everyone on screen when you get hit - so be sure to get Tarot Cards or Crown Abilities that give you more! Cult Of The Lamb: Which Doctrines Should You Take? (TheGamer)

Cult Of The Lamb lets you customize your faith with twenty Doctrines chosen from a pool of forty. Which Rituals are best for you?

Pick Glory Through Toil even if you don't intend to use it frequently; it will help you get the resources you need for late-game buildings. The Brainwashing Ritual isn't that great to begin with, so choose Belief In Prohibitionism for a blanket efficiency boost and leave the mushrooms to Sozo. Choose Ritual Of Enlightenment to speed up your progress on the Divine Inspiration tree. Ritualistic Fight Pit lets you perform a ritual wherein two Followers fight to the death. Ritual Of The Harvest is more efficient overall, since it lets you sow and harvest large quantities of crops all at once. You could, however, rush this tier early in the game to get an outsize income from taxes while you're still in Darkwood or Anura. Ritual Of Resurrection allows the Lamb to bring a deceased Follower back from the dead. Try to delay your target just as everyone is going to bed for the evening. When a Doctrine is available to unlock, you can choose which category to upgrade, selecting one of the two Doctrines available at the next tier. Followers who do not approve of sacrifices will still cause a small Faith penalty, but the bonus outweighs this loss unless there are several Followers against the practice. The easiest way to get Commandment Stone fragments is to nurture the loyalty of your Followers. Frequent blessings and daily sermons will quickly cause them to level up, and each time they do you will be rewarded with some Devotion and a fragment. They primarily affect how your Followers will react when one of the Flock passes.
