More human remains found as parched Lake Mead gives up 4th body (Globalnews.ca)

Over a decade of near constant drought has depleted Lake Mead, a vital source of water for around 33 million people living in the U.S. southwest.

Demand for water from the depleted Lake Mead has only increased in recent years as its water level recedes. Police believe the victim was a man who died in the mid-1970s to early 1980s. When the first set of human remains was discovered on Mead’s parched shores, authorities warned that more bodies were likely to follow as water levels continued to recede — and they were right. Lake Mead is a manmade reservoir created by the Hoover Dam on the Colorado River. Over a decade of near-constant drought due to human-caused climate change has depleted this vital source of water for the southwestern states of the U.S. The latest body is the fourth set of human remains to be found on the shore of Lake Mead since May, when a body with gunshot wounds was discovered stuffed in a barrel. More human remains have been found at Lake Mead as the waters of the drought-stricken reservoir recede even further.

More Human Remains Found in Receding Reservoir Near Las Vegas (Today.com)

Lake Mead, a federal park as well as the country's largest reservoir, has unveiled more secrets as human remains were discovered at Swim Beach on Saturday.

Lake Mead was created by Hoover Dam, completed in 1935 and officially opened the next year. “A barrel has a signature of a mob hit,” he said. The growing Southwest’s dependence on the Colorado River — which feeds taps and helps grow food for an estimated 33 million people — has also played a role in the lake’s shrinking presence. In May, the Southern Nevada Water Authority announced that one of its water supply intakes was exposed to the lake’s descending surface and could no longer be used to draw liquid. Other symptoms have included the mighty Colorado’s longtime failure to reach the Gulf of California until last year, when a binational agreement put water back in Mexico’s delta. - May 1: Remains were found in a barrel.

(BOULDER CITY, Nev.) — Human remains were again found in Lake Mead, the country's largest reservoir that continues to shrink amid a decades-long drought, ...

On May 7, human skeletal remains were found near the lake’s Callville Bay, according to the National Park Service. The discovery came a week after the decayed body of a man was found stuffed in a steel barrel near the reservoir’s Hemenway Fishing Pier, more than 20 miles from Callville Bay, according to the LVMPD. The minimum water surface level needed to generate power at the Hoover Dam is 1,050 feet, according to the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. Anything below that is considered an “inactive pool,” and a “dead pool” exists when the water level hits 895 feet, according to the federal agency. According to the National Park Service, someone made the discovery at the park’s Swim Beach in Lake Mead National Recreation Area, on the Nevada side, around 11:15 a.m. Saturday. This marks the fourth time since May that human remains were found in Lake Mead, where water levels continue to recede at historic levels.

The Bodies Keep Piling Up at Lake Mead (New York Magazine)

Another set of human remains was found on August 6 at Lake Mead, the fourth since May, as water levels at the reservoir continue to drop to historic lows ...

National Park Service rangers received a call late Saturday morning reporting the discovery of remains at Swim Beach, which is on the southwestern end of the reservoir on the Nevada side and right next to where a set of partial human remains was found in late July. Park Service rangers and a Las Vegas Metro Police dive team later set up a perimeter and began the recovery process. One possible explanation, a National Park Service spokesperson told CNN, was that the three latest sets of remains belonged to people who had drowned in Lake Mead when water levels were much higher. On Saturday, another human skeleton was discovered at the Lake Mead Recreation Area near Las Vegas — the fourth set of human remains uncovered by the receding waterline there since May.
