Kevin Durant trade rumors: Superstar tells Nets owner to deal him or ... (CBSSports.com)

In a face-to-face meeting this past weekend, K.D. reportedly told Joe Tsai he doesn't have faith in the Nets' direction.

As it pertains to Marks, it's difficult to see exactly what issues Durant has with Brooklyn's general manager, who is a well-respected front-office executive around the league. As we inch closer to the start of training camp, there's always the possibility Durant could still be a member of the Nets when the 2022-23 season begins. It's been over a month since Brooklyn Nets superstar Kevin Durant requested a trade just hours before free agency started, and there hasn't been anything to suggest that a transaction is imminent.

After Durant’s trade request on June 30, the Nets engaged in conversations with almost every team in the league, according to sources. This summer, the Nets believe they have improved the roster and have a championship-ready team. After being swept by the Boston Celtics in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs, the Nets have been surrounded by uncertainty. Sources: Kevin Durant informed Joe Tsai that he does not have faith in the Nets‘ direction. Durant and Tsai spoke in London on Saturday and sources described the discussion as transparent and professional. The meeting took place a year to the day that Durant agreed to a four-year, $198 million contract extension with the Nets and barely over a month after his initial trade request on June 30.

Kevin Durant trade updates: Rumors, speculation reignite with trade ... (AZCentral.com)

The Kevin Durant saga with the Brooklyn Nets is evidently not anywhere near a conclusion. Where could the NBA star end up?

The wound is a very deep one, and simply needs to avoid infection right now." SNY's Ian Begley reported: "Late last month, multiple people familiar with the Nets’ Kevin Durant talks were pessimistic about the possibility of a deal getting done in the near future. Part of the pessimism stemmed from the idea that, as of last month, there was little appetite in the market for teams to serve as a third or fourth team to facilitate a Durant trade. Another went with him being traded to the New Orleans Pelicans. "The Celtics, Toronto Raptors and Miami Heat remain the most significant candidates to acquire Durant, sources said, with Boston’s package centering around All-Star forward Jaylen Brown seen as a viable deal. Durant is believed to want a change of scenery heading into his 16th season."

Report: Kevin Durant tells Nets owner to pick him or coach, GM (Arizona Sports)

Brooklyn Nets forward Kevin Durant reportedly met with team owner Joe Tsai in London on Saturday and reiterated his trade request.

Durant appeared in 55 games for the Nets last season and averaged 29.9 points, 7.4 rebounds and 6.4 assists per game. Most of that momentum for Phoenix came with center Deandre Ayton as a restricted free agent. Durant is believed to want a change of scenery heading into his 16th season.

Kevin Durant Gives Ultimatum to Nets Owner Joe Tsai, per Report (Sports Illustrated)

The 12-time All-Star reportedly has lost faith in the direction of the organization.

- Will LeBron James Sign Contract Extension With the Lakers? If Durant is traded, the Nets’ front office has expressed privately that the team plans to take “every last asset” from a team that trades for Durant, according to Charania. Durant, who is entering the first year of a four-year, $198 million contract extension he signed last summer, apparently wants a change of scenery.

Brooklyn Nets Face A Franchise-Altering Decision With Kevin ... (Sports Illustrated)

All-Star forward Kevin Durant met with Brooklyn Nets owner Joseph Tsai recently in regards to his trade request made this offseason.

Vaughn was a candidate for the head coaching position before the team hired Nash as well. It does not appear that he wants to be playing for an organization run by Sean Marks and Steve Nash anymore, which is a bit surprising given that these internal issues have not been brought to light over the last couple of seasons. The Raptors, Celtics and Heat have remained engaged in trade conversations with the Nets for Durant through the last several weeks and a lot of speculation of a potential Boston-Brooklyn trade has risen due to the fact that the Celtics could possibly look to deal All-Star wing Jaylen Brown in a deal for Durant. Should Joseph Tsai commit to Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, firing Sean Marks and Steve Nash before the start of training camp in September, who could the Nets realistically hire in such a short amount of time? Kevin Durant has always been fond of current Los Angeles Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue, leading many to believe that Durant wanted the Nets to hire him over Nash in 2020 and Kyrie Irving has always been close with Los Angeles Lakers assistant Phil Handy. The big question now is not whether or not Kevin Durant will miss training camp as he waits on a response from Joseph Tsai and the Nets, but whether or not the Nets will accommodate Durant and move on from Sean Marks and Steve Nash.

Kevin Durant trade rumors: Nets owner Joe Tsai responds to ...

However, Nash's tenure started off rocky when Irving said on Durant's podcast that he doesn't really see the team having a head coach in terms of leading the team, shortly after Nash was hired. While the Nets have fallen short of their championship aspirations in each season Durant has played for them, it's surprising to hear he's essentially calling for the dismissal of both Nash and Marks. Especially as it pertains to Nash, who initially received support from Durant in the hiring process due to the time the two spent together in Golden State. Nash has compiled a 92-62 record in two seasons with the Nets, including playoff appearances in both years. The Nets are having difficulty finding other teams to help facilitate a trade, which given the high asking price for a player of Durant's caliber, that's not entirely surprising. It's been over a month since Brooklyn Nets superstar Kevin Durant requested a trade just hours before free agency started, and there hasn't been anything to suggest that a transaction is imminent.

Warriors No Longer in Running For Kevin Durant (Sports Illustrated)

The Brooklyn Nets and Golden State Warriors will likely not complete a KD trade.

With the Nets now finding themselves in an even more complicated situation, another element of Charania's story has seemingly gone overlooked. Compromising that for Durant would have gone against this vision, which was successfully completed with their most recent title. The organization could either trade the two-time Finals MVP, or they could relieve head coach Steve Nash and general manager Sean Marks of their duties.

Kevin Durant's 'ultimatum' puts Nets in a bind, but empathy for ... (USA TODAY)

Brooklyn Nets owner Joe Tsai might have to choose between superstar Kevin Durant or coach Steve Nash and GM Sean Marks.

The first part of that equation is more difficult than the second, but finding a new coach and staff at this point in the offseason isn’t easy either. — Trade Durant and keep Nash and Marks. No team wants an unhappy player, especially as he enters the first year of a four-year extension worth $194.2 million. There’s no guarantee Durant would want out after a season or two, and catering to stars hasn't helped the Nets at all in the past three seasons. Regardless of what you think of Nash as a head coach, he’s never had a full roster or one deep and well-rounded enough to compete. The trio played just 16 games together because of injuries and Irving’s decision to not get the COIVD-19 vaccine, making him ineligible to play in most Nets home games in the 2021-22 season because of New York City’s vaccine mandate. Harden, too, wanted out, and before free agency began on June 30, Irving looked for potential trades and his situation – no matter what anyone says – remains unresolved.

The “bad center” is DeAndre Jordan, who was signed because that was part of the deal to land the two stars. Or maybe they call Durant’s bluff — he’s under contract through 2026, after all — and start the year with both. For those keeping score at home, the “good coach” is now-Warriors lead assistant Kenny Atkinson, who was the Nets coach when Durant and Irving first joined, but was fired before the first season of the superstar pairing. Just a few years after signing with the Brooklyn Nets alongside his best friend Kyrie Irving, Durant — a few months removed from getting swept out of the first round of the playoffs — asked for a trade. I could spend a lot of words trying to poke fun at it, but my friend and colleague put it succinctly and perfectly. The Golden State Warriors are, gratefully, in the middle of streak almost entirely devoid of drama.

Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving trades could still shift West landscape - (Mile High Sports)

Beyond the Lakers, teams out West that make at least a modicum of sense for Irving are the Mavericks, Minnesota Timberwolves, and possibly the Los Angeles Clippers. The Mavericks lost Jalen Brunson to free agency and have done next to nothing to replace him. This instability has an impact on the entire NBA. While the Nets themselves are unlikely to get better after these trade demands are fulfilled, the team that acquires Durant will be getting at least a top 7 player in the NBA. Durant is under contract for the next four years, and while the last four years show why it’s difficult to count on him to be around the entire time, he’s still Kevin freaking Durant. While the Nuggets are confident in what they have, it would be better for them if they didn’t have another contender to worry about. Durant and Kyrie Irving signed with the Nets in 2019 to form what was initially thought to be a new super team in Brooklyn. Though Durant sat out the entirety of the 2019-20 season recovering from a torn achilles, his return in 2020-21 validated the change in scenery with Durant playing like the best player in the world very often. As of now, Tsai appears steadfast in his support of Nash and Marks, meaning Durant is likely still out of the door before the start of the 2022-23 season. Durant does not want to remain a member of the team unless both head coach Steve Nash and general manager Sean Marks are let go.

Why Kevin Durant's ultimatum to the Nets requires just a one-word ... (CBSSports.com)

Let's hone in on why, in London, Durant reportedly told the Nets owner he must either trade him -- or fire head coach Steve Nash and Marks. It's not, as Shams ...

So if this report from Shams came from Durant and the people around him -- as seems quite clear, especially given the rosy presentation of Durant's end of things -- then KD went in 24 hours, straight from asking Tsai to fire Nash and Marks, to trying to publicly pressure Tsai to do it. Don't let him end the run of Marks, who has proven himself a great general manager, nor that of a Hall of Fame player in Nash who deserves more time to show what he can or can't do as a head coach. It's to say that many all-time great players are remarkably awful string-pullers and would-be GMs. Look westward, Tsai, to the Los Angeles Lakers and one LeBron James for a real-world, real-time reminder. His talent borders on the miraculous, and his love for the game is clear. This is all happening, including the timing and tone of this news story, because Durant has too often made a habit of being neither transparent nor professional. He's saying, regardless of how newsbreakers try to present his latest diva-demand, either trade him -- or make him the boss.

Now that Durant’s ultimatum has become public, the Nets have even less leverage in trying to work out a deal in a market where they’ve already been unable to find an offer anywhere near their asking price. - In another “Get Up” segment, Bontemps states that nothing about the trade market has changed in the wake of Durant’s ultimatum (Twitter link). Teams still aren’t willing to give the Nets the type of trade package that they’re seeking, so Bontemps expects Durant to remain with Brooklyn into the start of training camp and possibly into the beginning of the regular season. - Durant’s unhappiness with the Nets can be traced back to Marks’ statement in May that the front office needs to regain control of the franchise, ESPN’s Tim Bontemps said today in an appearance on “Get Up” (video link). He adds that if Tsai had even considered getting rid of Nash and Marks, he would be letting the players run the team again.

If there is a chance that the Nets can get Irving and Durant on the floor in this final year of Irving’s contract, Tsai has to do whatever it takes. There have been reports throughout the entire offseason that Durant isn’t happy with the Nets front office, and was not in contact with them. Combine that with a Durant injury, the Nets end up in the play-in tournament, and get bounced in the first round by the No. 1 overall seed. That’s the way it’s going to have to be in Brooklyn. You went all in to get Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant and it has not produced the return that you wanted on the basketball court. The millennials went full millennial in the borough where Biggie was born, and the content spewed out like water from the fire hydrant that was twisted open in Do the Right Thing. For all of the gossip and drama, the one thing that hasn’t been a constant for the Nets is winning.

Have Kevin Durant and the Nets Reached the Point of No Return? (Sports Illustrated)

SI's Chris Mannix and Howard Beck discuss Monday's bombshell that Kevin Durant gave the Nets an ultimatum and what the request mean's for both Durant and ...

You can’t say—and this report is the equivalent of Kevin Durant saying it because Durant has declined to deny it—you can't say that you don't believe in your front office and more specifically your coach, and then hope to have any success with that team during the season. But if you decide not to trade him, or if you decide we have not gotten the right deal, and training camp arrives, the pressure moves to Kevin Durant. He's the one who has to decide, at age 34, which he'll turn in September, that he's gonna start burning days, weeks and maybe months of his career—a career that is probably closer to its twilight than not. The Nets’ best interest is keeping Kevin Durant and keeping Kevin Durant happy. Because he wants them to believe—as you seem to, Chris—that this means they're beyond the point of no return. I hate to rely on the Lakers of the Shaq-Kobe era for all of my most resonant examples. I thought they were thinking too outside the box then in bringing in a guy who had a relationship with Durant, who had a relationship with Sean Marks, but had absolutely no coaching experience at least when it came to coaching on the bench. And where does he think he's going to land in a trade, after some team has given up a boatload for him, that's gonna have a better chance to win than what he has in Brooklyn? None of this makes any more sense today than it did when the trade demand first landed. If his goal was to remove the entire leadership, the GM and the coach, and have them replaced, and that was the key to him staying, well, then that's a card you should have played maybe in June when you first delivered the trade demand, or maybe in April when they flamed out in a sweep by Boston in the first round. What I do know, Howard, is that Kevin Durant has pushed this situation to the point of no return. If these are your concerns, if you do not still have the faith that you had only a year ago when you signed the four-year extension that is about to begin, if these concerns are now that prominent, that urgent, then the second the season was over, you should have been in there with Joe Tsai saying, Listen, I've lost faith in this whole operation. Is it about moves that they have made with the roster? They have chosen not to avail themselves of any of that to clarify, to inform, to deny, to confirm, to anything.

Bickley: Kevin Durant's exit could get messy for Nets, maybe Suns, too (Arizona Sports)

By my calculations, there is only one way Durant lands in Phoenix. There must be a second act of petulance even worse than the first.

So how far is Durant willing to go to get to the desert? He must eliminate all other suitors (Miami, Boston, Toronto) with his bad attitude, and essentially force the Nets to take a suboptimal deal from the Suns. His greatest shots are never fired from the bow. It didn’t take long for Nets owner Joe Tsai to voice his clear support of Steve Nash and Sean Marks, which means Durant failed to make a compelling case for their ouster. It speaks to his obsession to be elsewhere. Never before has an empowered, entitled NBA superstar had the gall to ask for multiple heads on a platter.
