Liverpool rescue a point at Fulham, but could be left playing catch-up (ESPN)

Fulham showed they don't want to be in the Premier League just to make up the numbers again as they drew 2-2 with Liverpool at Craven Cottage.

He is the first Liverpool player aged 23 years or younger to score in a Premier League season opener since Philippe Coutinho in 2015. The other was in 2006-07 when Liverpool drew 1-1 at Sheffield United and finished third. BEST: Aleksandar Mitrovic -- Can he finally do it in the Premier League? On this evidence, absolutely. "We got a point for a really bad game by my side, and now it's a question of how did it happen. Liverpool were much more threatening when he went off just before the hour mark. City have a tough-looking opener at West Ham United on Sunday, but they now have a chance to establish an early advantage over their closest rivals. Klopp was concerned about Liverpool's injury problems before kick-off -- Caoimhin Kelleher, Diogo Jota, Ibrahima Konate, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Kostas Tsimikas and Curtis Jones are all unavailable -- and Thiago Alcantara may now be added to that list. It can only be a matter of time before he starts. But both moments were products of his movement and energy. This is the only the second time that Liverpool has started a Premier League season with a draw against a newly promoted side. LONDON -- Fulham showed they don't want to be in the Premier League just to make up the numbers again as they came close to beating Liverpool at Craven Cottage, with the game finishing as a 2-2 draw.. Aleksandar Mitrovic, who scored 43 goals in the Championship last season, showed that at the age of 27 he might finally be ready for the Premier League. After heading home the first goal, he then won and converted a penalty to make sure the home side collected a point.

New Liverpool signing Darwin Nunez came off the bench to score one goal and set up another as the Reds salvaged a 2-2 draw at promoted Fulham in the opening ...

Roberto Firmino was preferred instead, but Liverpool’s attack clicked into a higher gear once Nunez came on for the Brazilian attacker. “The start of the game was really bad from us,” manager Jürgen Klopp said. Nunez tried to control a high cross into the box that time but the ball instead fell into the path of Salah, who had a simple tap-in.

Liverpool Suffer Thiago Alcantara Injury Blow In Draw With Fulham (Sports Illustrated)

Jurgen Klopp's injury issues continue to grow as Thiago Alcantara had to be substituted with what looked like a hamstring injury in Liverpool's 2-2 draw ...

It was, without doubt, a disappointing day at the office for Liverpool and also came at the cost of another injury to a key midfield player. Liverpool came again however and the presence of Nunez continued to be a thorn in Fulham's side as the Uruguayan got in behind their defence before touching back for Salah to tap home in the 80th minute. Liverpool will be relieved in the end to come away with a draw after the hosts made a bright start and deservedly took the lead in the 32nd minute when Aleksandar Mitrovic headed home a brilliant cross from Kenny Tete.

Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp says 'performance was a defeat' in the 2-2 opening draw at Fulham.

“You need this extra, this difference,” said the manager of the Uruguayan forward. For sure we have to think how we react but not panic.” The Fulham manager, Marco Silva, said his side “deserved more than a draw. “The result wasn’t a defeat but the performance was. “We started exactly the opposite way than we wanted. “The performance was a defeat,” Klopp said.

Latest Thiago injury heaps pressure on Klopp's midfield. Do ... (The Athletic)

Rather than sitting tight until 2023, you could make a strong case for Liverpool needing to sign one midfielder now and another in a year.

Elliott’s role should continue to grow as the season evolves but it would be wrong to expect too much from a teenager who is still learning that role. The bar will get raised collectively but that heavily depleted midfield department is a growing cause for concern. However, the changes Klopp made in midfield were also key to triggering that second-half improvement as Harvey Elliott and James Milner both impressed. Henderson’s passing accuracy was just 74 per cent (66 per cent in the opponents’ half), while Thiago won a third of his nine duels. Liverpool held a strong interest in Monaco midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni earlier this year but always feared that Real Madrid would win that race and so it proved. “A transfer must make sense now and in the long term,” said Klopp post-game at Craven Cottage. “We still have enough midfielders. He’s facing another lay-off — the latest in a long line of agonising setbacks that have hampered the Spain international’s time at Liverpool. That meant that, as Liverpool twice came from behind in the second half to avoid an embarrassing defeat against promoted Fulham, they were without four of their eight senior midfielders. The manager went on to eulogise the array of talent already at his disposal. Yes, they’ve been dogged by some cruel misfortune but it wasn’t entirely unpredictable, especially given the amount of football Thiago, Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain have previously missed. “The last thing that would have crossed my mind is that we have to do this. It was cranked up another level after Thiago limped off early in the second half at Craven Cottage on Saturday, clutching his left hamstring.
