Election-denier Mark Finchem wins Arizona GOP secretary of state ... (NBC News)

Mark Finchem, a prominent 2020 election denier and an Arizona state legislator, has won the Republican secretary of state primary, NBC News projects.

In a 2014 interview with local news outlet InMaricopa.com, Finchem identified himself as a member of the Oath Keepers, a far-right militia group whose founder was charged with seditious conspiracy and other counts in connection with the Jan. 6 insurrection. The winner will go up against Democrat Kris Mayes in November. Attorney General Mark Brnovich ran for Senate but lost a primary against Blake Masters, NBC News projects. If elected, Finchem would, as the official who oversees the state office administering the 2024 presidential election, have the power to possibly affect the outcome of the race. He supported a partisan review of Maricopa County’s election results, even though the review reaffirmed Biden’s victory. State Rep. Shawnna Bolick, another 2020 election denier, had 19% of the vote, while businessman Beau Lane got 25%. Experts say that scenario could contribute to an even more robust effort to overturn a presidential election.

Arizona GOP primary results for governor's race still too close to call (PBS NewsHour)

Arizona Republicans are deciding between a well-known former news anchor and a development attorney in the race for governor of a crucial battleground ...

His competition included Shawnna Bolick, a state lawmaker who has pushed for legislation allowing the Legislature to overturn the will of the voters and decide which candidate gets the state’s 11 electoral votes for president. Lamon signed a certificate falsely stating that Trump had won Arizona in 2020 and that he was one of the state’s “duly elected and qualified” electors. The Republican race for Arizona secretary of state was won by Mark Finchem, a Trump-backed candidate who was at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. As Arizona’s top elections official, Hobbs endeared herself to Democrats with an impassioned defense of the integrity of the 2020 election, a stance that has drawn death threats. She has also emphasized Lake’s prior support for Democrats, including a $350 contribution to the last Democratic president. She ran as a fierce critic of the mainstream media, which she says is unfair to Republicans, and other enemies of Trump’s Make America Great Again movement, including the late Sen. John McCain’s family. “Everyone wants to try to make this some kind of proxy for 2024,” said Christie, who ran for president in 2016. That could give Trump a better opportunity than in Georgia to influence the winner. Federal and state election officials and Trump’s own attorney general have said there is no credible evidence the election was tainted. In Kansas, voters rejected a state constitutional amendment that would have allowed the Legislature to restrict or ban abortion. Defeats, however, might suggest openness in the party to a different path forward. Former President Donald Trump backed Kari Lake, who walked away from her nearly three-decade career in television news and embraced his lies about the 2020 election.

Victories underscore the continued political potency of the stolen election myth, with most significant win in Arizona.

Meijer blasted Democrats for boosting Gibbs’s campaign as part of a strategy to elevate more extreme candidates who might be easier to beat in November. There were other signs of how election conspiracies continue to dominate Arizona politics. He has also been subpoenaed by the congressional committee investigating the attack.

Election Victories by Trump Allies Showcase His Grip on the G.O.P. ... (The New York Times)

PHOENIX — Primary victories in Arizona and Michigan for allies of Donald J. Trump on Tuesday reaffirmed his continued influence over the Republican Party, ...

In Michigan, Mr. Trump had delivered a late endorsement to Ms. Dixon, who easily won the Republican nomination for governor after two top rivals were tossed from the ballot for turning in fraudulent petitions. Mr. Culp was not among the top two candidates with roughly half the votes counted. The former president and his allies have been particularly focused on the vote-counting and certification process in both Arizona and Michigan, seeking to oust those who stood in the way of their attempts to overturn the 2020 election. But the highest profile House race in Michigan was Mr. Meijer’s re-election bid. Representative Jaime Herrera Beutler was ahead of her Trump-backed challenger Joe Kent, a retired Green Beret, with more than half the vote counted. In Kansas, voters offered a warning sign to bullish Republicans, as a ballot measure on abortion showed the electoral potency and shifting politics of the issue in the wake of the Supreme Court’s ruling overturning Roe v. Ms. Lake, who has made voter fraud a centerpiece of her candidacy, declared victory at a moment when she was actually behind in the vote counting. The race is expected to be among the most contested of the fall midterms. “The Trump endorsement — that’s it,” she said on Monday at a pre-election rally. In Washington State, Mr. Trump had backed challengers to two Republican House members who voted for his impeachment. In Arizona, Mr. Trump’s choice for Senate, Blake Masters, won a crowded primary as did his pick for secretary of state, Mark Finchem, an election denier who has publicly acknowledged his affiliation with the far-right Oath Keepers militia group. Mr. Ducey put his support behind Ms. Robson, a wealthy real estate developer who spent more than $18 million on her run.

PHOENIX (AP) — An Arizona lawmaker who embraces election conspiracies and was endorsed by former President Donald Trump won the Republican primary Tuesday ...

He was appointed by Gov. Jay Inslee last November and hopes to retain his seat for the remaining two years of former Republican Secretary of State Kim Wyman’s four-year term. Brown embraced election conspiracy theories and promised to rid the state of ballot drop boxes. In all three states, the secretary of state is the top election official. Arizona’s was the most high-profile secretary of state’s race in Tuesday’s primaries. Finchem, who attended Trump’s Jan. 6, 2021, rally that preceded the violent assault on the U.S. Capitol, has said he only intends to ensure that election laws are followed to address concerns by many Republicans about how elections are run. Mark Finchem beat out three other GOP candidates in the race for secretary of state.

Primary Elections Live: Race Calls in Arizona, Missouri and News ... (The New York Times)

Arizona and Michigan have joined Pennsylvania and Nevada in picking Republican candidates for governor and secretary of state who reject the 2020 outcome.

Wade. The result, in a conservative state, was a major victory for supporters of abortion rights. Impeachment posed a thorny issue for Republicans because the seat became more competitive after redistricting: Mr. Meijer’s vote to impeach Mr. Trump hurt him in the primary but would probably have helped him in the general election. The vote in Kansas, which resoundingly rejected a ballot referendum that would have removed the right to abortion from the State Constitution, was the first test of Americans’ political attitudes on the issue since the Supreme Court overturned the Roe v. Instead, they have been the ones to be marginalized and expelled from the G.O.P. ranks in Congress, as primary voters favor those who have adopted Mr. Trump’s playbook of attacks fueled by cultural grievances and conspiracy theories. But she could face a tough competitor in Ms. Dixon, who managed to unite warring factions of her party allied with Mr. Trump and the state’s wealthy DeVos family. In Kansas, voters offered a warning sign to bullish Republicans, as a ballot measure on abortion showed the electoral potency and shifting politics of the issue in the wake of the Supreme Court’s ruling overturning Roe v. Voters in deep-red Kansas delivered a loud warning shot to Republicans across the country, signaling that abortion has the potential to energize voters who the G.O.P. had hoped would remain disengaged. The former president and his allies have been particularly focused on the vote-counting and certification process in both Arizona and Michigan, seeking to oust those who stood in the way of their attempts to overturn the 2020 election. In a statement declaring victory, he pledged to continue the “fight for economic and racial justice in Congress.” “We wanted to make sure that we could bring the party together,” Ms. Dixon said in a radio interview. “They could tilt the counting, casting and certification of ballots, and that is really harmful,” said Benjamin Ginsberg, a prominent Republican election lawyer who has been critical of efforts to undermine the electoral process. The Catholic Church in Kansas led a vigorous campaign in favor of the amendment.

Candidates took early leads Tuesday in Arizona congressional primaries that will set the stage for the Nov. 8 midterm elections.

West Point Graduate Adam Morgan, of Kingman, is a former U.S. Army Ranger captain and now works in the cybersecurity field. Kutz brought in approximately $75,400, followed by Morgan with close to $70,000 and Dowling with a little more than $63,200. Before his job at Raytheon, Anderson worked in the wind energy field. In second place was Wheeling at $1.17 million, with around $401,000 left as of the same date. Former Navy SEAL Eli Crane won the Republican nomination in the 2nd district and will face O'Halleran on Nov. 8. Jerone Davison, a former NFL player and pastor, set social media abuzz with his provocative ad advocating for assault weapons and featuring the candidate defending his home against Democrats in Ku Klux Klan hoods. “I’m looking forward to working with Jevin from now through November to continue growing our Democratic majority in the House.” The district is competitive but leans slightly to the right. As of April 25, 46 of the 50 states had settled on the boundaries for 395 of 435 U.S. House districts. Every seat in the House and a third of the seats in the 100-member Senate are up for election. Here’s a complete calendar of all the primaries in 2022. In June, he told his story to the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. For the U.S. Senate, Arizona Republicans chose Blake Masters, a young venture capitalist who mimics Trump’s baseless election claims and traffics in the culture wars that have become central in the far-right discourse. State Rep. Jake Hoffman (R), another alternate elector, won his race for the state Senate unchallenged. He was censured by the U.S. House last year after posting on social media a violent anime video that depicted him attacking Biden and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.). Gosar won his primary on Tuesday night. Hamadeh has claimed, without evidence, that the U.S. elections “have been hijacked.” Swenson, of Sun City, thinks Trump won the 2020 election but doesn’t think Lake can do much about that now. Now, he’s one election away from overseeing voting in Arizona as the GOP nominee for secretary of state, a position that would make him the state’s top elections official. Voters narrowly chose Biden over Trump — the first time since 1996 a Democrat won the state — making it ripe for attempts to litigate and overturn the results. The Associated Press estimated Wednesday that about one-fifth of primary ballots had yet to be counted.

GOP voters tap radical election denier to oversee Arizona elections (MSNBC)

There's no shortage of key elections this year, but those who see Arizona's secretary of state race as among the most important are not being hyperbolic.

In a 2014 interview with local news outlet InMaricopa.com, Finchem identified himself as a member of the Oath Keepers, a far-right militia group whose founder was charged with seditious conspiracy and other counts in connection with the Jan. 6 insurrection. So, if elected, Finchem could simply refuse to certify any democratic victory in any state, local, or federal election, citing the sorts of unspecified and unproven claims of fraud he has raised to say that 2020 should not have been certified.” Mark Finchem, a prominent 2020 election denier and an Arizona state legislator, has won the Republican secretary of state primary, NBC News projects. Having a far-right conspiracy theorist who doesn’t accept legitimate election results in an office that oversees elections opens the door to a possible crisis. Right off the bat, the obvious problem with Finchem’s candidacy is that he’s an unhinged election denier, basing much of his candidacy on ridiculous conspiracy theories about Trump’s defeat. As we’ve discussed, these officials tend to work behind the scenes on unglamorous tasks such as election administration, and few reach the household-name level.
