New Vikings head coach left the door open for a potential return this offseason when he mentioned Barr during his introductory press conference, but Jordan Hicks signed with Minnesota during free agency, leaving Barr to wait until August to find a new team. Barr was the eighth overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft and spent his first eight seasons with the Vikings. A four-time Pro Bowler, Barr re-signed with the Vikings prior to the 2018 season, but injuries limited him to just 27 of 49 possible games since signing his contract. According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, Anthony Barr will sign with the Dallas Cowboys, ending his tenure with the Minnesota Vikings.

The combination of injury risks here likely induced the Cowboys to add a veteran. Perhaps Barr’s Cowboys decision leads the Broncos back to Schobert. Given the recent connections, it would surprise if the Broncos did not add a veteran at this spot soon. The Cowboys also have rookie fifth-round linebacker Damone Clark set to miss most of this season because of offseason spinal fusion surgery. He had Broncos GM George Paton, previously the Vikings’ assistant GM, and Cowboys assistant George Edwards — previously Minnesota’s defensive coordinator. The sides agreed to terms Wednesday, Mike Garafolo of NFL.com tweets. The Broncos pursued him as well, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets.

Barr brings a veteran presence to a linebacker room that currently features Leighton Vander Esch and reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year Micah Parsons. Last season, Dallas linebackers helped the defense finish seventh in the NFL in scoring and third in third-down efficiency. Like the Commanders, the Cowboys were also rumored to be among the teams that expressed interest in Barr during the offseason. Barr, who reportedly received interest from the Washington Commanders this offseason, was deciding between the Cowboys and the Denver Broncos, according to NFL Media.

How Anthony Barr signing hardly impacts Cowboys' cap space, but ... (Cowboys Wire)

Barr comes cheap, but the role he can fill for the Cowboys' defense may be invaluable.

The Cowboys had depth for virtually every defensive position, except for someone to do what Parsons does. He’s also a viable pass-rusher when given the green light to run loose. Coming off his fourth-consecutive Pro Bowl, Barr agreed to a five-year, $67.5 million deal heading into the 2019 season, but he never again reached that peak performance. Earlier in the day, Dallas released rookie UDFA LB Aaron Hansford, an indication a move was on the way. And he did so with bringing in four-time Pro Bowl linebacker Anthony Barr for relatively little expense. Whether one agrees with the philosophy or not, and rest assured most Cowboys fans on social media fall in the latter category, one thing is for sure.

“I’ll do that again some this year, where he’d be a D-end for the game,” Quinn said. “He was definitely lining up to get more opportunities (before) he had the injury on special teams. Signing Barr, team officials indicated, was of interest dating back to the spring. The now-30-year-old returned to play 11 games games in 2021. And think of the guy who’s got to guard our backs out of the backfield. You can put the tape on and say, ‘He knows the ball’s going here.’ That’s the instinctual part of it.”

As a rookie, Barr won a game for the Vikings when he forced, recovered, and returned a fumble for a touchdown in overtime against the Buccaneers. He had his best season in 2015, recording career highs in PFF grade (90.1), pressures (27), forced fumbles (3), and passes defended (7). Why Dallas Cowboys Shouldn't Have Signed Anthony Barr (Sports Illustrated)

The Dallas Cowboys have signed linebacker Anthony Barr to a one-year contract worth up to $3 million.

Cox posted a very respectable Pro Football Focus grade of 73.0 in his 2021 preseason action with Dallas. A good offseason with him will be good for him. Barr has been selected to the Pro Bowl four times and is already a popular signing among Cowboys fans. Additionally, Cox displayed the ability to turn takeaways into six points for his team. Going into the NFL Draft this year, linebacker was identified as a major need for Dallas by many in the media and fanbase.
