Report: Blue Jays Discussing Noah Syndergaard Trade With Angels (Sports Illustrated)

The 2022 trade deadline could be a homecoming. The Blue Jays are talking with the Angels on former Toronto prospect and current LA starting pitcher Noah ...

Syndergaard has pitched at least five innings in 11 of his 15 starts this season and has allowed more than three runs in just two outings. Despite decreasing velocity and fewer strikeouts than in his days with the Mets, Syndergaard remains a solid starting pitching option. Injury and workload concerns remain, but the righty could insulate the back of a Blue Jays rotation that doesn't have much reliable depth after the top four.

It is not known what offer, if any, the Blue Jays ultimately made. The 29-year-old Syndergaard was a first-round pick by the Blue Jays in 2010, but was dealt to the Mets as one of the top prospects in the deal for starter R.A. Dickey prior to the 2013 season. Syndergaard is 52-39 with a 3.37 ERA for his career and was an All-Star in 2016. In return, the Phillies are trading Mickey Moniak and a second prospect to the Angels, according to Jayson Stark of The Athletic. As the clock ticked closer to the cutoff, Toronto and Philadelphia emerged as the two finalists vying for his services. The Philadelphia Phillies are finalizing a deal to acquire right-hander Noah Syndergaard in a trade with the Los Angeles Angels, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN, bolstering the team's starting rotation.

The Phillies have agreed to a trade for Angels right-hander Noah Syndergaard that would send former No. 1 overall pick Mickey Moniak and prospect Jadiel ...

Syndergaard would join former Mets rotation-mate Zack Wheeler, who has provided a one-two punch along with Aaron Nola atop the Phillies' starting staff this season. Though the long-haired righty, who garnered the nickname Thor during his time in Queens, has battled injuries, he made 15 starts for the Angels this season with a 3.83 ERA. The Phillies acquired Angels right-hander Noah Syndergaard on Tuesday in a deal that sends former No. 1 overall pick Mickey Moniak and prospect Jadiel Sanchez back to the Angels.

Angels reportedly trade Noah Syndergaard to Phillies (Los Angeles Times)

Angels pitcher Noah Syndergaard reportedly was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday. Earlier, the Angels sent Brandon Marsh to the Phillies.

He had a stellar 2021, in which he jumped from high A to triple A over the course of the season, batting .210 with a .789 on-base-plus-slugging percentage. In 75 games in double A this season, he hit .275 with an .888 OPS. His addition gives the Angels a top-rated player at a position they are thin at. He also has five starts in which he pitched into the sixth inning and gave up two or fewer runs. Working with the stuff that I have is going to make me a better pitcher for when the plus stuff comes back. The outings helped showcase that he was still worthy of being a big league pitcher despite the significant time missed. Syndergaard also can’t receive a qualifying offer, since he was already extended one in 2021 by the New York Mets. Syndergaard lowered his ERA to 3.83 for the season after a solid outing against the Royals in Kansas City on July 25. “Thor” as he’s affectionately called by fans, rose through the ranks as a fireballer, pitching in the high 90s and triple digits. And hopefully, I can dominate even more.” He pitched 5 2/3 innings of six-hit, two-walk, one-run ball. In a series of moves made in the last hours and minutes of this year’s trade deadline, the Angels on Tuesday traded Syndergaard and Marsh to the Philadelphia Phillies and Iglesias to the Atlanta Braves.

Noah Syndergaard trade: Phillies land righty at deadline, Angels get ... (CBS sports.com)

The Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday acquired right-hander Noah Syndergaard from the Los Angeles just prior to the 2022 MLB trade deadline, Jayson Stark ...

According to Stark, outfielder Mickey Moniak -- a former No. 1 overall MLB draft pick -- and another prospect will be going to the Angels in return. In Philly, he'll slot in behind the impressive one-two punch of Aaron Nola and Zack Wheeler. While "Thor" doesn't boast the elite velocity of yore, at least not yet, he's succeeded thanks to a more balanced five-pitch repertoire.

Phillies Acquire Noah Syndergaard (MLB Trade Rumors)

Syndergaard, 29, was an excellent pitcher for the Mets from 2015 to 2019, with a 3.31 ERA in that time along with a 49.1% ground ball rate, 26.4% strikeout rate ...

Syndergaard is having a quality season for the Halos, though not quite up to his previous standard. He landed the #19 spot on Baseball America’s list of top Philly prospects at their most recent update, with BA noting his excellent exit velocity in the minors. For the Angels, Moniak essentially becomes a replacement for Marsh, who was dealt to the Phillies earlier today. Despite almost no action for two years, the Mets extended an $18.4MM qualifying offer to Syndergaard, which he turned down. Syndergaard will take his spot in the rotation next to Aaron Nola, Zack Wheeler, Kyle Gibson and Ranger Suarez. In fact, this is the second deal of the day between the Angels and Phillies, after they already swapped Brandon Marsh for Logan O’Hoppe.

Phillies acquire Noah Syndergaard for former No. 1 pick Mickey ... (That Balls Outta Here)

After landing CF Brandon Marsh and RHP David Robertson on deadline day, Phillies executive Dave Dombrowski made it a trifecta by acquiring Noah Syndergaard.

Also, Syndergaard is reunited with Zack Wheeler, his former Mets rotation teammate. All in all, Dombrowski had a solid day. The Phillies were first linked to the former New York Mets ace via trade rumors about a week ago. Despite previously being hesitant to part ways with the organization’s top prospects, the Wild Card-hopeful Phillies wound up doing just that. Along with Moniak and Sanchez, the Phillies traded catcher Logan O’Hoppe and right-hander Ben Brown. O’Hoppe was ranked as the Phillies’ No. 3 prospect and is the No. 86 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline. Brown meanwhile, was the Phillies’ No. 7 prospect per Baseball America, and their No. 26 prospect per MLB Pipeline. Moniak, of course, was just the second first overall pick in Phillies history, with the other being Pat Burrell. But Moniak had far from the career “Pat the Bat” had in red pinstripes — slashing only .129/.214/.172 across parts of three seasons and 105 plate appearances.

Noah Syndergaard trade details: Angels send starter to Phillies after ... (Sporting News)

Philadelphia fans: Thor is headed to a ballpark near you. According to multiple reports, right-handed pitcher Noah Syndergaard is headed to the Phillies, ...

If Syndergaard can keep the strong showings going — Syndergaard gave up one earned in 5.2 innings in his last start — he can add some real value as a middle-of-the-rotation arm. He's got a little pop and decent speed, attributes the Angels need now more than ever amid concerns over Mike Trout's long-term health and Shohei Ohtani's long-term future. Nola and Wheeler are studs, while Zach Eflin and Ranger Suarez have made some positive contributions in the red-and-white this season. At 24 years old, though, there's still a little time for Moniak to grow. He's slowed since then, slashing .239/.288/.725 in 142 at-bats. With Syndergaard back in the NL East, the Phillies have a pretty formidable rotation.

MLB trade grades: Phillies make last-minute move to acquire Noah ... (ESPN)

The veteran pitcher is headed to Philadelphia. How much does the move help the Phillies' rotation?

So, despite his natural power, he remains raw and is light years away from the majors. It wasn't a great draft and Moniak was hardly a slam-dunk choice, but the bat just hasn't developed. Due to Shohei Ohtani's presence in the rotation, the Angels have gone with a six-man rotation, so Syndergaard hasn't pitched on four days of rest all season -- and only three of his 15 starts have come on five days. Since he's owed about $7 million the rest of the way, this was really a salary dump more than anything. The question Phillies fans will ask: Why not the likes of Luis Castillo, Frankie Montas or Tyler Mahle? Simple: The Phillies didn't have the farm system depth to acquire one of those starters. Syndergaard is not the pitcher you may remember from his Mets heyday, when he earned the "Thor" nickname due to his long hair, intimidating presence and triple-digit fastball.

Philadelphia Phillies add needed rotation piece in Noah Syndergaard (Call to the Pen)

The Philadelphia Phillies have added the final piece they needed for a playoff push. Noah Syndergaard is heading back east.

While he has not been the Thor of old, that production is certainly an upgrade over what the Phillies had in the rotation previously. The Phillies rotation has been the same as it was in recent years. According to Ken Rosenthal from The Athletic, they have acquired Noah Syndergaard. In exchange, Jayson Stark reported that Mickey Moniak and a prospect are heading to Los Angeles.

He garnered his own billboard on the outside of the ballpark. He only pitched two innings in the last two seasons, and has been in a six-man rotation throughout this season in part to help limit his innings. Syndergaard threw his slider and change-up more this season, and his fastball usage was down nearly 10 percent from his 2019 season with the Mets.

Phillies Acquire Angels Pitcher Noah Syndergaard, per Report (Sports Illustrated)

Philadelphia adds to its rotation, with the Angels receiving former No. 1 overall pick Mickey Moniak in return.

He’s played in 47 games in the majors over the past three seasons, batting .129 during that span with 41 strikeouts in 105 plate appearances. Moniak, 24, was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 draft, but has not lived up to that billing so far as a professional. Syndergaard, who signed with the Angels on a one-year, $21 million contract last offseason, is 5–8 with a 3.83 ERA in 15 starts this season.

The Phillies have been searching for starting pitching and struck a deal just before Tuesday's trade deadline to acquire Noah Syndergaard.

He had just 105 plate appearances over three seasons in the majors, missing out on his best opportunity early this season when he was hit by a pitch and broke his hand on the final day of spring training. Of Syndergaard's 15 starts with the Angels, 12 came on six or more days of rest and three came on five days rest. The Phillies had a need for a starting pitcher with Zach Eflin sidelined by a knee injury.

The Phillies added Noah Syndergaard to their pitching rotation at the MLB trade deadline, but how does this move grade out?

Of course, Syndergaard will have to stay healthy after missing two seasons thanks to Tommy John surgery and setbacks from it. At the end of the day, however, the Phillies upgraded at a position of need for very little cost. The Philadelphia Phillies and Los Angeles Angels were trade partners earlier on Tuesday, but their biggest splash came right as closing time was being called at the 2022 MLB trade deadline.

Phils land Thor, Marsh, Robertson in trio of trades (MLB.com)

ATLANTA -- Dave Dombrowski wanted to find a starting pitcher before Tuesday's 6 p.m. ET Trade Deadline. He got one with minutes to spare.

He wants to win.” Thomson said he will continue to use Seranthony Domínguez and Brad Hand primarily in the eighth and ninth innings, although Robertson can close, if needed, just like Corey Knebel and others this season. He wants to play. He wants to learn. They also consider him one of the game’s best defensive outfielders. He is on the 60-day injured list, which means he cannot rejoin the team until Aug. 25, at the earliest. Now, Syndergaard, 29, is not the hard-throwing Thor of seasons past with the Mets. His fastball once averaged 97-98 mph. “It gives us that little boost,” Kyle Schwarber said following Tuesday's 13-1 loss to the Braves at Truist Park. “We’ve been fighting, scratching, clawing for everything we’ve been getting so far. The Phillies said no each time. If something happened to another starter, they would be in trouble. “We’ve got a tough division and tough people who are in the race, but I think we’re better. “I think we’re a lot better ballclub,” Dombrowski said.

Philadelphia Phillies: Noah Syndergaard reunites with Zack Wheeler (Section 215)

The Philadelphia Phillies have concluded their trade deadline moves by reuniting Zack Wheeler with his former pitching partner, Noah Syndergaard.

A win-win no matter one’s stance on what they needed heading into the deadline. Outfielder Jadiel Sanchez, meanwhile, is a prospect whose value is up for debate depending on the resource. It seemed as though the Phillies were running out of time as the 6 p.m. deadline rapidly approached, but Dombrowski found a way to get it done and did so without giving up any remaining high-end prospects. All season long, the Angels have been protective of Syndergaard, implementing a sixth-man rotation and spacing out his appearances. He may not be controllable after this season, but they certainly did not pay an exorbitant price for the rental starter as only Mickey Moniak and Jadiel Sanchez were dealt in the move. The Phillies have found their starter as they have acquired Noah Syndergaard from the Los Angeles Angels.

How ESPN and others rank Phillies' trade deadline deals, including ... (The Philadelphia Inquirer)

"I love what the Phillies have done," said longtime ESPN MLB reporter Buster Olney.

The Phillies didn’t have the luxury of time. If I were the Phillies, I’d be worried that his 3.83 ERA won’t hold up amid regression and less pitcher-friendly confines. And they pick up a reliever in David Robertson. I love what the Phillies have done. (Could the Phillies have somehow hijacked both ends of the Bader-Montgomery trade? But together, they added up, and the Phillies filled just about every hole they had. It’s a creative solution from the Phillies’ front office. Robertson saved 14 games for the Cubs while compiling a 2.23 ERA and recording 11.4 strikeouts per nine innings. The question Phillies fans will ask: Why not the likes of Luis Castillo, Frankie Montas or Tyler Mahle? Simple: The Phillies didn’t have the farm system depth to acquire one of those starters. But if anything, they lost ground to the Braves and Cardinals. A bigger upgrade in the rotation or center field would’ve been nice. The veteran duo came at the cost of a couple of long-shot prospects and former top overall pick Mickey Moniak, who was probably on his way to being DFA’d,” Murphy wrote. Robertson not only deepens the Philadelphia bullpen, but he brings it into focus. Got to love what Dave Dombrowski did the last 36 hours.”

Phillies set date for highly anticipated Noah Syndergaard debut (That Balls Outta Here)

Once featured in the Mets rotation alongside Zack Wheeler, Noah Syndergaard has reunited with the right-hander and will soon make his Phillies debut.

But, the Phillies hope they can unlock some of the seven-year veteran’s early career magic — such as his lone All-Star season in 2016. A 2010 Toronto Blue Jays first-round draft pick, Syndergaard was traded just once before in his career. According to MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki, the right-hander will start Thursday’s four-game home series opener against the Washington Nationals.
