The New York Yankees have traded left-hander Jordan Montgomery to the St. Louis Cardinals for center fielder Harrison Bader.
St. Louis also acquired Jose Quintana from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday. Bader has not played since June 26 because of plantar fasciitis in his right foot. Montgomery joins a rotation with Adam Wainwright and Miles Mikolas and will be an important pitcher for St. Louis moving forward with Steven Matz (knee) currently on the injured list.
The trade, which has been officially announced by both teams, also includes a player to be named later or cash considerations going to the Yankees, conditional ...
However, due to a two-year extension signed in April, Bader’s salary was locked in at $4.7MM for both the 2022 and ’23 seasons, plus performance bonuses. Bader, one of the speedier center fielders in the game, was limited to 103 games in 2021 due to a forearm strain and a rib fracture. Bader is currently in a walking boot for the injury. Known for his defense, Bader picked up his first Gold Glove last year and finished second in the Fielding Bible awards voting. At present, the Cardinals sit three games back in the NL Central and are one game back from a wild card spot. Montgomery, 29, is a big addition to the Cardinals’ rotation.
The Yankees and Cardinals pulled off a late outfielder-pitcher swap.
He's currently on the injured list with plantar fasciitis in his right foot. He throws strikes and has generated a career-high 46 percent ground balls this season, making him a good fit in front of St. Louis' top-notch defensive infield. Montgomery, 29, posted a 3.69 ERA (104 ERA+) and a 4.22 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 114 innings this season in pinstripes.
The New York Yankees have traded left-handed pitcher Jordan Montgomery to the St. Louis Cardinals, according to reports.
It’s unclear what this means for the Yankees’ rotation the rest of the season. Montgomery was a key cog in the Yankees’ rotation. The left-hander was 3-3 with a 3.69 ERA in 21 starts, striking out 7.6 batters per nine innings while walking 1.8. The 29-year-old was a member of the Yankees’ rotation since he broke into the majors in 2017. Bader, 28, was hitting .256 with five home runs and a .673 OPS. He’s been on the IL since June 27 with right foot plantar fasciitis. Does Domingo German remain in the Yankees’ rotation until Luis Severino (lat strain) comes off the injured list? The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Lindsey Adler first reported the deal.

He’s expected to return before the end of the season, but this deal makes little sense given how well Montgomery has performed this season. Bader is currently on the injured list with plantar fasciitis and will be shut down for several weeks; currently wearing a walking boot. He currently features a 93 wRC+, indicating he’s 7% worse than the average MLB player. He’s earned 7.61 strikeouts per nine, a 76% left on base rate, and 46.4% ground ball rate. He’s not known for his home run hitting capabilities, and as a righty hitter, he can’t fully take advantage of the short right porch in Yankee Stadium. Montgomery has had a quality 2022 season, featuring a 3.69 ERA and 3.62 xFIP over 114.2 innings.

John Mozeliak on the addition of Jordan Montgomery: "We think we're getting someone that if we need a game in October, he's going to be someone that we can call upon." Asked by reporters in New York to describe what kind of the pitcher the Cardinals would be getting, Montgomery responded with this assessment: “Loves baseball, works hard, a good teammate and will die on the mound.” The 29-year-old was hard on himself in his assessment of how he pitched as a Yankee, saying: “I still don’t think I really performed the way I should’ve here. The New York Yankees have traded Jordan Montgomery to the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for Harrison Bader at the MLB trade deadline.
Montgomery was frustrating, sure, but still posted a 3.69 ERA and 1.1 WAR in 114.2 solid innings. The Yankees thought they were getting Pablo Lopez, were unable to finish that deal, and still signed off on Montgomery’s departure for whatever reason. Bader’s currently injured, and though the Cardinals reportedly claim he’ll return before the end of the season, the “end of the season” isn’t the immediate present.
