Gallo has hit .159 since being acquired by the Yankees at the trade deadline last season.

"Yeah, I think feel like people are a little sick of me here, so I don't really know what else I can do at this point here," he said. "I went through a lot of adversity and I really had to question myself a lot," Gallo said. I do appreciate people reaching out, but it makes me feel like I'm a problem." Prior to his arrival, Gallo was a career .211 hitter and made his living based on his power numbers. "I don't know how they usually are, but I don't know how much tougher they can get. Here's his response to being asked if Yankees fans have been "too tough" on him:

I went through a lot of adversity and I really had to question myself a lot. Yankee fans are notoriously hostile and aggressive when it comes to players struggling for their team. So for me, I just was trying to remember to be a good teammate, play the game the right way, play the game hard and not do something stupid that I’d regret. Gallo hit 38 homers last season, one of the best marks of his career, hitting about .200 with a 35% on-base rate. Joey hasn’t had the privilege of enjoying New York City and everything it has to offer. Are they rough on you away from the ballpark, too?

Joey Gallo is ready for leave the New York Yankees after parts of two seasons of struggles and fan abuse, and the two-time All-Star outfielder is expected ...

It’s going to be really tough to leave these guys. Gallo: I went through a lot of adversity and I really had to question myself a lot. Gallo: Yeah, I think feel like people are a little sick of me here, so I don’t really know what else I can do at this point here. Gallo: I’m actually really going to miss this team, miss these guys. So I knew New York was going to be a tough time and a tough place to play, especially the player that I am. Gallo: I don’t know how they usually are, but I don’t know how much tougher they can get. In Texas I was playing every day, so it was a little easier to get on a streak. So for me, I just was trying to remember to be a good teammate, play the game the right way, play the game hard and not do something stupid that I’d regret. I learned a lot about myself, I guess. I’ve been a .200 hitter my whole life and I hit .160 here. He arrived as a career .211 hitter, then stooped to a more dreadful .159 in 140 games over parts of two seasons with the Yankees with 25 homers, 194 strikeouts and 77 walks in 501 plate appearances. Is it as simple as — you never got really hot for the Yankees? You always hit home runs in bunches in Texas. We just saw Aaron Judge hit 11 homers in 12 games.

No one, and I mean no one, needed to see more of that. While it's depressing to see a current Yankee say those types of things, I respect the shit out of his honesty. Over the last few days Gallo has talked to the media about how his days are numbered and how he feels about his time spent here. In Texas I was playing every day, so it was a little easier to get on a streak. He's not a guy who is going to hit for .300 and make contact all the time. That to me is not an excuse for why he couldn't get going. We all wanted Joey Gallo to succeed in New York, it just didn't work out and it's unfortunately come to this. Today Cashman will either find a trade partner like he's rumored to be on the verge of, or Gallo will mercifully be DFA'd. A split between the two sides is for the best and should have happened already to be honest. The guy they got really just struck out the whole time and played at a below replacement level consistently. In 140 games played between 2021 and 2022 with the Yankees, Gallo combined to hit .160. with an OPS south of .700, an OBP below .300 while mustering 25 homers and 70 walks in that time. Moving over from right to left in the field never worked either with the gold gloves he won in his previous position not transferring over. Joey Gallo's time with the Yankees will finally come to an end later today.

It’s a little tougher not playing every day trying to get that streak going, as well,” Gallo said. In what amounts to nearly a full season since, he has 25 homers, 46 RBIs and 77 walks. “Coming here, I knew it was going to be really tough. I was a strange player.

Dodgers To Acquire Joey Gallo (MLB Trade Rumors)

Gallo has spent the past year in the Bronx, coming over the from the Rangers in a massive deadline deal last summer. At the time, the power-hitting outfielder ...

Beeter, a righty from Texas Tech, checked in as the #15 prospect in the L.A. system on Baseball America’s most recent rankings. Gallo is capable of carrying a lineup at his best, as he did during last year’s first half in Texas and during a half-season in 2019 when he hit .253/.389/.598 with 22 homers. It’s an inopportune time to market Gallo, but the Dodgers certainly aren’t anticipating they’re getting a player who’ll hit .159/.291/.368 — as Gallo did in over 500 plate appearances with New York. They’re betting on his pre-Yankees track record, hopeful that a change of scenery and perhaps some desired mechanical tweaks can get him back on track. The Yankees no doubt envisioned his left-handed pop playing perfectly in the short right field porch at their home ballpark, but Gallo’s tenure in New York proved a major disappointment. The Dodgers will assume the reminder of that money, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post ( Twitter link). The Yankees retained Gallo via arbitration in hopes his production would bounce back towards his career norms. The 28-year-old stumbled to a .160/.303/.404 line through 58 games after the trade last year. He’s playing this year on a $10.275MM salary, around $3.7MM of which is yet to be paid. At the time, the power-hitting outfielder was fresh off a second career All-Star nod and carried a .223/.379/.490 line with 25 home runs in 95 games. The opposite transpired, as his struggled became even more pronounced in 2022. They’ve reportedly agreed to acquire him from the Yankees in exchange for pitching prospect Clayton Beeter. Once Taylor returns, Gallo figures to work off the bench behind Taylor, Cody Bellinger and Mookie Betts. He’ll add some left-handed power to a group that also includes Jake Lamb, while he adds a plus defensive outfielder for late-game situations.

The Dodgers will also have to send down a position player to clear a spot on the roster for Gallo. James Outman, who is off to a historic start to his career, is the most likely candidate. With Chris Taylor still on the injured list, Gallo will split time with Trayce Thompson in left field. The outfielder is also known for his high swing-and-miss rate as he led the Majors in strikeouts last season. How the Dodgers find consistent playing time for Gallo will be interesting. His 38.8% strikeout rate this season ranks in the bottom one percent in the league. The 28-year-old is known for his power, but he hasn’t been able to tap into that this season.

In return, the Yankees are getting Clayton Beeter: A strikeout artist with questionable control, Beeter holds a 1.375 career WHIP in the minors, with a 14.4 K/9 rate. His 38.8 percent strikeout rate in 2022 is about in line with his career average (37.1 percent), while his contact rates — 61.5 percent in 2021, 59.1 percent in 2022 — are also in line with his career average. Gallo never quite brought his Texas-sized power to the Yankees, hitting just 25 home runs over that span. Gallo's tempestuous tenure in New York came to an end when the team acquired Andrew Benintendi last week. As a three-true-outcome player, Gallo didn't exhibit much of the other two outcomes aside from the strikeouts. Gallo's tenure in New York was less than ideal.

Dodgers acquire slugger Joey Gallo from the Yankees (Los Angeles Times)

The Dodgers traded for slugger Joey Gallo on Tuesday, sending minor league pitcher Clayton Beeter to the New York Yankees.

In 58 games following last year’s trade, Gallo hit .160 with 13 home runs. He has struggled, however, since joining the Yankees from the Texas Rangers at last year’s deadline. During his first seven seasons with the Rangers, Gallo posted consistent production — albeit in an unusual manner. The team has been waiting for third baseman Max Muncy and center fielder Cody Bellinger to rediscover their old form amid season-long struggles. Still, the Dodgers are hoping Gallo can give their lineup a boost, acquiring the pending free agent in a relatively low-cost move in which they will only give up Beeter, the club’s No. 15-ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline who has a 5.75 ERA in 18 games at double A this season. The team acquired Joey Gallo from the New York Yankees, sending pitching prospect Clayton Beeter back in the deal.
