The New York Yankees have traded left-hander Jordan Montgomery to the St. Louis Cardinals for center fielder Harrison Bader.

St. Louis also acquired Jose Quintana from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday. Bader has not played since June 26 because of plantar fasciitis in his right foot. Montgomery joins a rotation with Adam Wainwright and Miles Mikolas and will be an important pitcher for St. Louis moving forward with Steven Matz (knee) currently on the injured list.

Meanwhile, Luis Severino won’t be eligible to return to the rotation until mid-September, after being transferred to the 60-day injured list on Monday. According to manager Aaron Boone, Montas will meet the club at St. Louis and not New York, due to a death in the family. Frankie Montas, added to the rotation via trade on Monday, could start this weekend when the Yankees visit the Cardinals at St. Louis.

Montgomery is a very solid pitcher who is easily one of the five best on the Cards current rotation. It’s one year and two months of Montgomery for one year and two months of Bader, so that aspect is equal. This is too shocking for me to really give you an opinion of the trade.

At present, the Cardinals sit three games back in the NL Central and are one game back from a wild card spot. Montgomery, 29, is a big addition to the Cardinals’ rotation.

But the Bronxville native has been on the injured list since late June with plantar fasciitis and is currently in a walking boot for one to two weeks, according to reports, putting him out of play for at least a few more weeks. Montgomery, who is also under contract through 2023, had a strong start to the season but had been shakier of late to raise his ERA to 3.69 across 21 starts.

Even if Carpenter has a suspect glove in the outfield, if the plan is to use Bader as a late-inning defensive replacement for Judge or Carpenter ... he’s hurt. Outside of that lone possibility, I’ll admit that I’m a little fuzzy on this deal. He won the Gold Glove last year, has been in the 95th percentile for Outs Above Average every season but one in his career, he’s very fast, and he doesn’t strike out much. If that were replicated over a 150-game season, that plus his defense would make him very valuable — not quite Aaron Judge level, but certainly a five-win center fielder. The Cardinals needed pitching, and they have a surplus of Gold Glove-winning fielders, so I guess I see the angle from their side. From the Yankees’ side, uh, I’m a little confused.

What to think about new Yankees Harrison Bader (Pinstripe Alley)

Right before Tuesday evening's trade deadline, the Yankees and Cardinals struck a head scratcher of a deal, at least from New York's point of view.

Those tools have faded a bit in the 72 games he’s played this year, but hopefully, the Yankees can get the idealized version of Bader healthy and on the field come playoff time. Perhaps someone that can do this has a bit more to find in the tank: Perhaps the most unfortunate part of this season for Bader is that he is currently injured and in a walking boot due to plantar fasciitis (a sometimes nagging injury), and likely will be for at least another week. In ‘19, Bader was able to bump his walk rate up to a very solid 11.3 percent mark, but wasn’t able to muster much else. In 72 games this year, Bader has put up a 93 wRC+, slashing .256/.303/.370. He is also interestingly boasting career low walk rates and strikeout rates, 4.9 and 17.8 percent, respectively. The Yanks acquired defense-first center fielder Harrison Bader, and shipped out Jordan Montgomery. Bader is a speedy outfielder with perhaps a hint of pop, who has long been heralded as one of the game’s premier defensive center fielders.
