The Mets acquired outfielder Darin Ruf from the Giants on Tuesday for infielder J.D. Davis and three pitching prospects.
Givens, 32, is 6-2 with two saves and a 2.66 ERA over 40⅔ innings pitched this season. Zwack, 24, is 6-2 with 2.36 ERA in 18 appearances (15 starts) in two Class A stops in the Mets' system, while Seymour, 23, is 5-5 with a 2.76 ERA in 18 appearances (13 stops) in two Class A stops. He has an .886 OPS against lefties, giving the Mets a player to platoon at designated hitter with left-handed-hitting Daniel Vogelbach, who will start against right-handers.
In Queens, Ruf is probably in line to be the right-handed half of a DH platoon with Dan Vogelbach and also serve as the go-to pinch-hitter from the right side.
Zwack, a left-hander, and Seymour, a right-hander, have both pitched in A-ball this season. Ruf is under contract for $3 million next season, and his deal includes a $3.5 million team option/$250,000 buyout for 2024. Ruf, who just recently turned 36, is a right-handed bat with some power who can play left field and first base.

Zwack and Seymour were both 2021 Draft picks for the Mets. They also added right-handed relief help with the acquisition of Mychal Givens from the Cubs, a source told MLB.com. Ruf, 36, has a long history of mashing left-handed pitching, including an .887 OPS against southpaws this season. In addition to Davis, left-handed pitching prospects Thomas Szapucki and Nick Zwack and righty pitching prospect Carson Seymour are also going to the Giants in the deal. Davis, 29, filled the Mets' righty bench bat role for the first four months of the season, but he slashed just .238/.324/.359 in 207 plate appearances. The Mets have not confirmed the Givens trade, and the return for Chicago was not immediately known. WASHINGTON -- The Mets replaced one right-handed bench bat with another on Tuesday, acquiring veteran Darin Ruf from the Giants for J.D. Davis and prospects, the team announced.
Darin Ruf is on the move as the Giants traded the lefty-masher to the New York Mets for J.D. Davis and three prospects.
He figures to see some time at third as the Giants wait for Evan Longoria to return. Ruf was an extremely popular player in the Giants' clubhouse, and has crushed lefties since signing with the team in 2020. The Giants sent their lefty-masher to the New York Mets on Tuesday in exchange for veteran J.D. Davis, left-hander Thomas Szapucki and two prospects.
The San Francisco Giants traded DH-outfielder Darin Ruf to the New York Mets for J.D. Davis and three other players at the trade deadline.
Davis, a free agent after the 2024 season, is earning $2,760,000. Ruf, 35, hit 16 homers and had a .904 OPS last year, and he’s hit 11 homers in 90 games this year. Ruf was emotional about his time with Giants, saying, “When you get comfortable in a place with teammates or a coaching staff, it was a great such a situation to be in. He is batting .216 with a .328 on-base percentage this year. Davis, who is good friends with Giants starter Logan Webb, told reporters in New York that he’s excited to get the opportunity to play in California and though he grew up a Dodgers fan, he’d always thought he’d eventually find himself playing for the Giants. “Everyone always said I was going to wear a Giants uniform,” he said. He’s an experienced pinch hitter with a .929 lifetime OPS vs.
He's earning $3MM on the season, of which about $1MM remains. He also has a $3.5MM club option for 2022 with a $250K buyout. Ruf and fellow new acquisition ...
Seymour was drafted by the Mets in the sixth round in 2021 out of Kansas State. Prior to last season, Baseball America rated him as a 45-grade prospect, saying he can “land three pitches for strikes,” and needed to recover his velocity after spending 2020 at the Mets’ alternate site. Since coming over from the Astros in a January 2019 trade, Davis has posted a 125 wRC+ for the Mets in 1,100 plate appearances. This year, however, Davis has posted just a 102 wRC+ for the Mets in 207 plate appearances and hasn’t been drawing many starts of late. Davis became particularly expendable with the Mets’ signing of Eduardo Escobar back in November plus the acquisition of Vogelbach. Davis played in 140 games for the Mets in 2019, but has played in only 195 games since 2020 due to injuries. At the risk of stating the obvious, the trade suggests the Mets think Ruf can help them more this year than Davis, as both are bat-first right-handed hitters.
