ARLINGTON -- Trey Mancini stood alone just outside the third-base dugout at Globe Life Field. As news trickled out, a few coaches and gameday staffers ...
Murray, 25, has gone 8-3 with a 3.24 ERA with 73 strikeouts in 17 games (16 starts) between Double-A Montgomery and Triple-A Durham in Tampa Bay’s organization this season. Maldonado was slashing .173/.239/.342 with 10 homers and 30 RBIs entering Monday after posting a .852 OPS in July. Brantley, the starting left-fielder, has been out since June 26. “I'm thrilled to be a part of the organization,” Mancini said. So I'm excited to be a part of it and. Vázquez will join veteran Martín Maldonado and split time at the catching spot, with veteran Jason Castro (knee) perhaps out for the season. Mancini was an experienced club leader in Baltimore and has playoff experience. Houston also has lacked production in center field, where Jake Meyers and Chas McCormick are splitting time. … But definitely excited to see what the rest of this year holds in Houston.” He’s also a cancer survivor whose off-field perseverance has been more important than his on-field strength. “They've had such a consistently good team for a lot of years, and they're having another great year this year. Mancini's deal was a three-team deal with the Rays and Orioles. Vázquez was acquired from the Red Sox in exchange for infielder Enmanuel Valdez (the Astros’ No. 28 prospect) and outfielder Wilyer Abreu (No. 29 prospect).
Center fielder José Siri goes from Houston to Tampa Bay, while a trio of pitching prospects also find themselves on the move. The Rays send Seth Johnson to the ...
Baseball America recently named him the #6 prospect in a thin Houston farm system, praising his 92-96 MPH fastball and a pair of possible above-average breaking pitches in his slider and curveball. Johnson will have to be added to the 40-man roster at the end of this season or be exposed to the Rule 5 draft. At least in the case of Mancini, they remain committed to their goal of bolstering the roster for 2023 and beyond, but it’s a move that’s likely to disappoint at least some segment of the clubhouse and fanbase. The Rays also part ways with Murray, whom they selected in the 23rd round of the 2019 draft. He’s hitting just .147/.225/.250 with a strikeout rate north of 40%, though, and the struggles at the plate became too much for the Tampa Bay front office to ignore. Johnson is the more well-known of the duo. The 40th overall pick in the 2019 draft, he’s a former college shortstop who has flashed impressive stuff and dominated low level hitters in his limited time on the mound. Mancini had been a career-long member of the organization, one of the few productive big leaguers to remain on the MLB roster throughout the franchise’s recent rebuild. (Mutual options are almost never exercised by both player and team, and Mancini seems likely to forego his end in search of a multi-year pact this winter). It’s another addition to a Houston club that already boasts one of the league’s top lineups. Mancini’s a well-rounded bat who’ll presumably cut into the playing time of Yuli Gurriel. The reigning AL batting champion is a longtime member of the Houston organization, but he has an underwhelming .243/.293/.392 line on the year. In order to clear a spot for Siri on the 40-man roster, Tampa Bay designated outfielder Brett Phillips for assignment.
The Houston Astros have traded for Baltimore Orioles outfielder Trey Mancini, who will immediately slot into the middle of their lineup.
His final at-bat for the Orioles at Camden Yards was an inside-the-park home run, so he gave them something to remember him by. He has been with the organization since 2013. Baltimore will now move forward with a rebuild just three games out of the AL Wildcard spots.
The Houston Astros have been heavily tied to Josh Bell since rumor season for the MLB trade deadline started, but they ended up landing Trey Mancini for a ...
Baltimore doesn't deserve to see the field in October if they're going to trade their only tradable piece for a pitcher getting Tommy John surgery in Johnson and a total wild card in McDermott. Any other year, you could chalk this up to the Orioles doing what they had to do and moving Mancini for something instead of nothing. The Baltimore Orioles, meanwhile, aren't letting a chase for a wild card spot knock them off-course in their rebuild.
Mancini joins the first-place Astros and multiple players will head to Baltimore.
They have a 12-game lead in the AL West and have won three of the past five AL pennants and are looking for another ring. As such, dealing Mancini isn't a big surprise. Kyle Tucker is the everyday right fielder and Michael Brantley, the left fielder, is hurt. Mancini missed the 2020 season after being diagnosed with colon cancer, but returned to the majors in 2021. He hit 21 home runs in the regular season and also advanced to the finals in the Home Run Derby last year. That means for the time being, we should expect Mancini to get a lot of the playing time in left while Chas McCormick and Jake Meyers play center.
This summer marked Trey Mancini's third in Baltimore facing trade rumors, having stayed with the Orioles past the deadlines of 2019 and 2021.

Mancini currently is on the final year of his original deal and includes a $10 million option for next season along with a $250K buyout option. He’ll add depth to an Astros lineup boasting the likes of Yordan Alvarez, Jose Altuve, and Alex Bregman. In our trade piece profiling Mancini hit 20+ home runs in every season he’s been in the league except for one. Dan Connolly of The Athletic reports that the Baltimore Orioles have traded infielder and designated hitter Trey Mancini to the Houston Astros.

Now, he’s reportedly headed to the Houston Astros, who were theoretical players for Willson Contreras (Updates below – it was a three-team trade!). The trade deadline is not disappointing. Orioles Reportedly Trade Trey Mancini to the Astros (UPDATE: Actually a Three-Team Trade)

But his defense should help the Rays. He has been credited with seven outs above average and eight defensive runs saved in 315 innings in center field this season. The right-hander has a 5.50 ERA in 19 games, including 10 starts, in High A this season. Johnson is arguably the best prospect involved in this trade. In 92 games this season, the righty-swinging Mancini has a slash line of .268/.347/.404 with 10 homers. He would also make substantial money playing a position where the Orioles already have a younger replacement in Ryan Mountcastle at first. The Orioles have traded first baseman and designated hitter Trey Mancini to the Astros, the team announced Monday. The Tampa Bay Rays are acquiring José Siri from Houston as part of the agreement, which is a three-team deal.
To the Orioles: RHP Seth Johnson (from TB), RHP Chayce McDermott (from HOU). McDermott, who will turn 24 later this month, is a very Mike Elias player to ...
At least it is nice to know that Mancini is headed for a team that’s winning a lot. It would have been nice to see this Orioles team, currently .500 with 62 games to play, ride out the season with the guys they have and see what they can do. It would have been nice to see Mancini getting to play more for a winning Orioles team. Mancini was a fun out-of-nowhere prospect when he arrived in MLB and immediately made a great impression by homering three times in his first five games at the tail end of the 2016 season. Johnson, who will turn 24 next month, is on the injured list currently and according to Rosenthal is headed for Tommy John surgery. Johnson was the #40 overall pick by the Rays in the 2019 draft out of Campbell University. That means he’ll need to be added to the 40-man roster this offseason to protect him from the next Rule 5 draft - also surely a factor in him being available in a trade like this.
The Orioles have dealt the veteran to the Astros before the deadline. We break down the impact of the trade.

The Trey Mancini trade from the Orioles to the Astros had players and fans in Baltimore trying to process heartbreak and frustration.
Judging the trade right now can only go so far. Seeing it actually happen crushed fans and even players like Ryan Mountcastle, Anthony Santander and Jorge López. The Trey Mancini trade from the Orioles to the Astros had players and fans in Baltimore trying to process heartbreak and frustration.
The Baltimore Orioles received two intriguing prospects for Trey Mancini, but separating business from emotion is nigh impossible in this instance.
The utopian scenario for a vast majority of Orioles fans included a World Series winning team of which Trey Mancini was a key member, but it was not meant to be. Mancini is of the ilk of past Orioles like Elrod Hendricks, Adam Jones, and Cal Ripken, Sr, all leaving indelible marks on Orioles culture. He has always been beacon of positive energy both in the clubhouse and out. Unfortunately, Johnson is soon undergoing Tommy John surgery and will be out of action until 2023 at the earliest. It’s nigh impossible to detach sentiment from this transaction for Orioles fans, however. Drafted in the 4th compensatory round a year ago, the 23-year-old McDermott has been used as both a starter and reliever for Houston’s Hi-A affiliate.
The Sporting News gives you the details on just what it took for Houston to pry Mancini from the Orioles.
Lastly, Tampa Bay brought in Siri, a light-hitting outfielder who is poised to take over in center field. However, the 24-year old is slated to get Tommy John surgery. Mancini was one of the O's most consistent bats throughout his tenure in Baltimore, hitting 20 or more homers in four of his five seasons in orange-and-black. With the trade, Houston gets adds another quality bat to an already explosive lineup. The trade was first reported by The Athletic's Dan Connolly. After months of speculation, Orioles veteran outfielder/first baseman Trey Mancini was finally dealt.

We just lost one of the greatest teammates and one of the greatest players.”
Are the prospects that Baltimore acquired truly worth upsetting the rhythm of a team that, for the first time in ages, actually looks capable of stringing wins together? After years of losing and losing and more losing, Baltimore has finally put a competitive team on the field. But with the team in such a groove as of late — the O's went 16-9 and in July (!) — was the juice worth the squeeze? But the O's had seemed to finally seemed to put the pedal on the gas in recent months. For a rebuilding team like the Orioles, perhaps a prime Mancini didn't fit the timeline. I’m just gonna go out there every day and keep playing for this team and the name across my chest because I love the city and the team and all of these guys in here.
Baltimore is in the thick of the playoff race, but now the heart of its clubhouse is playing for the Astros.
There remains a chance, though, that this is not the end of this story. Parting ways with Mancini—who will be a free agent this winter—for players who are a long way from helping the big-league club surely dampens any enthusiasm building around the idea that the ‘22 version of the Orioles could put together a special final two months of the season. Altuve debuted at the start of that run, and was the team’s only All-Star representative in ‘11 and ‘14 before helping guide the team back to the postseason in ‘15. Now, the two are teammates in Houston, with Mancini providing the Astros with another quality bat to plug into its already deep lineup. To be an Orioles fan for the better part of the last decade meant tuning in for quite a bit of losing on a nightly basis. That tenure came to an end with Monday’s three-team trade that sent the 30-year-old Mancini to Houston, ending a chapter of one of the game’s most inspirational stories. This is a franchise that had lost 108 games or more in each of the past three 162-game seasons, as the front office engineered a complete teardown to reignite its organizational depth.
The Orioles added depth to its stable of pitching prospects, while the Astros got a high-floor arm.
No need to dive into Trey Mancini and how he fits in with the Astros as we did that a bit earlier. The right-hander’s out pitch is his plus slider which tunnels effectively off of his opposite-moving heater. This season has not been as kind to Siri offensively, posting just a .178/.238/.304 slash line. The third pitch for Murray is an average changeup, which he almost exclusively throws to lefties. Murray releases from a low vertical attack angle and his fastball features a ton of arm side run at 93-96 mph. Johnson has a pair of breaking balls, but his mid 80s slider is clearly the best. The toolsy centerfielder was spectacular in his 21 games last season, even earning himself some opportunities during the Astros pennant run after Jake Meyers was injured. As a result, McDermott’s ERA is inflated to 5.50 this season, however the peripherals point towards some bad batted ball luck. Johnson converted into a pitcher at Campbell University after struggling to find his footing as a shortstop in junior college. We had our first three team trade of the deadline yesterday when the Astros, Orioles, and Rays all got together to satisfy each organization’s needs. As for McDermott, his stuff is whiff-inducing, but battles command issues. Sitting at 95-97 mph, Johnson’s fastball is easily plus and could push 70-grade territory if he commands it a bit better.
