The Cincinnati Reds traded outfielder Tommy Pham to the Boston Red Sox on Monday for a player to be named later, multiple sources told The Athletic.

However, Boston is just 3.5 games out of one of the three wild-card spots. Pham has been a notable name around MLB this season, but not entirely for his play on the field. On the diamond, Pham has been a steady contributor in his first season with the Reds. In 91 games with Cincinnati, he slashed .238/.320/.374 with 11 home runs and 39 RBIs.

Tommy Pham has a .694 OPS for the Reds. The Red Sox reportedly acquired him via trade.

He has 467 career starts in left field, 185 career starts in center field and four career starts in right field. Pham, a 34-year-old right-handed hitter, has batted only .238 with a .320 on-base percentage, .374 slugging percentage, .694 OPS, 11 homers, 11 doubles, one triple, 57 runs and 39 RBIs in 91 games (387 plate appearances) this season. Pham has started 82 games in left field for the Reds this season.

McGuire became expendable for the White Sox when Yasmani Grandal returned after being sidelined by lower back spasms. A first-round pick of the Pirates in 2013, he has thrown out 11 of 36 attempted base stealers this season, a 30.6% mark that ranks fourth best in the American League. McGuire, 27, has a .225 average in 53 games. Boston has struggled since the All-Star break, dropping to 51-52 and into last place in the American League East entering Monday. There’s no mention of cash considerations, so it seems Cincinnati will save a bit of money for stretch run. In Pham, they add a right-handed bat to a corner outfield mix that has been very disappointing. The 34-year-old owns a .238/.320/.374 line with 11 homers in 387 trips to the plate. Rather, Boston has taken a flexible approach that has seen them ship out Vázquez and listen to offers on designated hitter J.D. Martinez while bringing in players like Pham and backstop Reese McGuire. The Sox enter play Monday 3 1/2 games out in the American League Wild Card race, leaving them to navigate a difficult position for the stretch run.

He’s hitting .310/.408/.667 in 12 rehab games with Triple-A Louisville. The team could also recall Stuart Fairchild or TJ Friedl from the minors (or taxi squad in the case of Fairchild).
