A good college friend of mine is friends with Effross' mom, and I sent over some photos of Effross via the late John Arguello of Cubs Den when Effross was drafted, then later met her at a spring training game in 2018. He was selected in the sixth round (No. 195 overall) of the 2019 Draft out of Sam Houston State University. Effross has stranded 24 of his 28 inherited runners this year (85.7%), the third-best mark in the NL. He has five more years of club control after 2022. After a solid stint with Chicago last year, Effross was enjoying a breakout rookie year out of the Cubs' bullpen this season, posting a 2.66 ERA with 50 strikeouts over 44 innings. Pitching has been an area of focus for the Yankees in advance of Tuesday’s Trade Deadline, with the club considered among the frontrunners for the Athletics’ Frankie Montas. But they can use help in the bullpen as well, especially after season-ending injuries to Chad Green and Michael King.

Cubs Trade Scott Effross To Yankees (MLB Trade Rumors)

The Yankees added some bullpen help by picking up righty Scott Effross in a trade with the Cubs. Read more at MLB Trade Rumors.

MLB.com has already updated its ranking of the Cubs’ top prospects with Wesneski slotting in No. 8, right behind fellow pitching prospects Caleb Kilian and Jordan Wicks. Through 19 starts and 89 2/3 innings so far this season, he’ notched a 3.51 ERA with a 22.4% strikeout rate, a 7.5% walk rate and a 41.6% ground-ball rate. The acquisition of Effross is pivotal for a Yankees team that has seen its previously rock-solid bullpen begin to show cracks of late. Effross, 28, isn’t a household name but has been outstanding since the Cubs promoted him for his Major League debut in 2021. He’ll be arbitration-eligible following the 2024 campaign and won’t reach free agency until the 2027-28 offseason. Right-handed hitters have had struggles of their own, hitting Effross at a solid .262 clip but posting a meager .287 OBP and just a .369 slugging percentage.

Chicago Cubs trade reliever Scott Effross to the New York Yankees ... (Chicago Tribune)

Chicago Cubs reliever Scott Effross was traded to the New York Yankees as the organization works to overhaul the roster.

He uses a five-pitch mix, featuring four- and two-seam fastballs, a slider, changeup and cutter, the latter of which Baseball America noted is a new pitch. Notably, Cubs assistant pitching coach Daniel Moskos was Wesneski’s pitching coach at the Yankees’ Double-A affiliate in 2021. Effross’ journey to the big leagues had stalled until he overhauled his arm slot three years ago at Double A and adopted a sidearm delivery. ... It’s an honor to have the role that I’ve had this year.” “He’s been put into so many tight pressure situations this season, and he’s been pushed a lot more than all of us and he’s just managed to keep it all together and go out there and continue to compete on the highest level,” Robertson said of Effross to the Tribune this weekend. “He makes pitches when he needs to.

Yankees trade for Cubs reliever Scott Effross ahead of deadline ... (CBS sports.com)

Effross has emerged as an above-average reliever who should help the injury-depleted Yankees bullpen.

The Cubs, for their part, add the 24-year-old Wesneski. He's spent the season in Triple-A, tallying a 3.51 ERA and a 2.96 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Effross is a sidearmer with a release point that, height-wise anyway, is similar to theRays' Ryan Thompson. His sinker checks in the low-90s and his slider is a sweeper that recorded a whiff rate north of 40 percent. Entering Monday, the Yankees were down five notable relievers: Michael King and Chad Green (both out for the season), Miguel Castro, Stephen Ridings, and Zack Britton, who is expected to make his return to a big-league mound later this month.

- SCHWARBER NAMED NL ALL-STAR: Indiana baseball's former first team All-American Kyle Schwarber will play in the MLB All-Star game for the second consecutive season. Effross worked his way through the Cubs' minor league system, posting a 3.91 ERA in 340.1 innings across six seasons. He used this momentum to become one of the Cubs' most reliable bullpen arms in 2022. Effross joins a Yankees bullpen that ranks second in the MLB with a 2.91 ERA. His dominance at Indiana continued in 2014, posting a 1.98 ERA in 54.2 innings. On Monday Aug. 1, Effross was traded from the Chicago Cubs (41-60) to the New York Yankees (69-34). Effross holds a 2.66 ERA across 44 innings with 50 strikeouts and 11 walks.

WHAT?! The Cubs Are Trading Scott Effross to the Yankees ... (bleachernation.com)

I am speechless. There was just no way I saw the Cubs moving righty Scott Effross this deadline, given how good he is, how he's still pre-arbitration, ...

I guess he gets to be on a big stage now and go to the postseason. With the Yankees, Moskos was the Double-A pitching coach and was seen as a big part of their pitching development infrastructure. I just liked Effross a lot, and I loved his story. The Yankees love his competitive demeanor and believe he’ll help them in the big leagues in the near future. Wesneski featured some of the best sink in the 2019 Draft, and he since has boosted the velocity on his two-seam fastball to where it now sits at 92-94 mph. Wesneski, 24, was the Yankees’ 6th rounder in 2019, and he must be a very polished type, because he reached Triple-A in 2021, which was only his first full pro season.

"I could see him in any kind of big situation, whether it's fifth, sixth, seventh, I could see him a lot of different roles, especially because of his ability to get both sides out. "That side arm [delivery], he's got that built in advantage a little bit against righties where he sinks the ball and has a good slider to go with it," Boone explained. With Michael King and Chad Green out for the rest of this year, New York could certainly use some help in the back end of their bullpen. Not to mention the fact that he's under team control for five more seasons, scheduled to hit free agency in 2028. The Indiana product is among the best in baseball with a 35% chase rate, 3.4% barrel rate and even if he doesn't throw particularly hard (averaging 90.2 mph on his sinker), he has 50 strikeouts, 28.1% of the batters he's faced. New York acquired Effross from the Cubs on Monday afternoon, sending the organization's No. 7 prospect Hayden Wesneski back to Chicago in the deal.

Effross said he only had thrown in back-to-back games in the minors a ‘‘handful’’ of times. ‘‘The arm-slot change is one thing,’’ Moskos told the Sun-Times about Effross this season, ‘‘but what he does every day, day in and day out, he’s one of the most consistent humans you’ll ever be around. He made his major-league debut in August of last season. In Triple-A this season, Wesneski has a 3.51 ERA and 8.3 strikeouts per nine innings. But Effross, a homegrown pitcher who has yet to reach arbitration, doesn’t fit into the sign-and-flip playbook the Cubs have used for veteran relievers in recent years. ‘‘And, obviously, it’s a lot of noise.’’
