Yankees Acquire Frankie Montas, Lou Trivino (MLB Trade Rumors)

The Yankees had been connected to Castillo, but he was traded to the Mariners in recent days. The Yanks evidently turned their attentions to Montas in order to ...

Selected by the Yankees in the fifth round in 2019, he has split his time this year between Double-A and Triple-A. In 17 starts between the two levels, he’s thrown 76 1/3 innings with a 2.71 ERA and incredible 36.5% strikeout rate. While the A’s are ramping up for the future, the Yankees are loading up for right now. In 43 Triple-A innings this year, he has a 1.67 ERA with a 33.7% strikeout rate, along with a 4.3% walk rate. In recent days, they’ve bolstered their lineup by adding Andrew Benintendi, added Montas to their rotation and Effross and Trivino to their bullpen. He’s played 80 games in High-A this year, putting up a line of .217/.343/.355 while playing second base and shortstop. His 28.7% strikeout rate and 52.3% ground ball rates on the year are both career highs while his 8.9% walk rate is a career low. The A’s have already completely remade their system this year with the aforementioned trades of Bassitt, Manaea, Olson and Chapman, and this deal will allow them to bring in four more fresh faces. The Yankees’ bullpen seemed unstoppable for much of the season but has since hit some snags. Given that the A’s aren’t likely to return to competition in that time, it made sense to make him available to other clubs. Next to Luis Castillo and Tyler Mahle, Montas has been seen as one of the better starting pitchers available at the trade deadline. Despite a down year in 2020, Montas still owns a career 3.73 ERA with a 24.8% strikeout rate, 7.8% walk rate and 43.5% ground ball rate. However, Severino landed on the IL a couple of weeks ago with shoulder tightness.

NEW YORK -- The Yankees have been among baseball's busiest clubs in advance of Tuesday's 6 p.m. ET Trade Deadline, bolstering their staff for the postseason ...

“We feel like he’s having a little bit of a down year statistically, but we don’t think it lines up with what we’re seeing on some of the underlying things and who we think he is. I think we’re comfortable with where he’s at shoulder-wise, and I know he’s going to be a big addition to the staff.” “He’s gone out and proved that the last couple of years, that he is that kind of caliber pitcher. “We’ve talked about him for a long time,” Boone said. He had a 3.70 ERA from 2018-21, all for Oakland, logging 22 saves last season. Montas, 29, was 4-9 with a 3.18 ERA in 19 starts for Oakland. In 104 2/3 innings, he scattered 91 hits and allowed 44 runs (37 earned), with 12 homers. In 32 innings, he permitted 46 hits and 25 runs (23 earned), walking 14 against 45 strikeouts. His level of talent, especially with how he’s pitched the last couple of years, I’m just excited to get him into the mix.” We’ve got to go out and do it still.” “There’s no question we’ve added four high-caliber players to intertwine with our group,” Boone said. As such, the Yankees were able to retain their top four prospects per MLB Pipeline: shortstops Anthony Volpe and Oswald Peraza, outfielder Jasson Domínguez and catcher Austin Wells. I’m excited we were able to push through on a deal for him.

Frankie Montas trade: Yankees boost rotation at deadline by ... (CBS sports.com)

Sears, 26, has appeared in seven games this season for the big-league team, amassing a 2.05 ERA (190 ERA+) and a 3.00 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He's a small left-hander with a flat angle to the top of the zone who relies on three pitches: a low-to-mid 90s fastball, a slider, and a changeup. Waldichuk has struggled with his location, and it's possible that he winds up pitching in relief. Trivino, along with fellow deadline addition Scott Effross, will help a Yankees bullpen that has already lost Michael King and Chad Green for the season. On the bright side, he's quite good when he's available, and an acquiring team will control his services through the 2023 season. Put another way, Castillo is on pace for his fourth 100-plus inning season in five tries; Montas' next will be the second of his career, a product of injury and suspension.

Yankees acquire coveted starter Frankie Montas from Athletics (Sportsnet.ca)

The New York Yankees have acquired Frankie Montas from the Oakland Athletics, further bolstering the roster of the American League East leaders.

Benintendi, 28, is slashing .320/.387/.398 with three home runs and 39 RBI for the Royals this season. Earlier on Monday, the Yankees added reliever depth too, bringing in Scott Effross from the Chicago Cubs. Effross, who has five more years of club control, is 1-4 with a 2.66 ERA, 50 strikeouts and 11 walks in 44 innings this season for the Cubs (41-60). He is expected to provide an upgrade from the left side of the plate over Joey Gallo, who is hitting .159 with 106 strikeouts in 81 games this season. New York is parting ways with four players to acquire the duo, sending left-handers Ken Waldichuk and J.P. Sears, right-hander Luis Medina and second baseman Cooper Bowman to the Athletics. For Oakland, the gem in the return is Waldichuk, one of the Yankees top prospects who has a 2.71 ERA across 76.1 innings of play in the minors this season. Montas was sixth in American League Cy Young voting last year after going 13-9 with a 3.37 ERA. For his career, Montas is 35-32 with a 3.73 ERA, but has dealt with injuries this season. Montas has pitched just once since coming off the injured list with a shoulder injury, but has been otherwise excellent this season — going 4-9 with a 3.18 ERA.

Yankees Trade for Frankie Montas (The New York Times)

With durability concerns mounting for multiple starters, the Yankees acquired Montas, a top right-handed starter, from Oakland.

These are players with the kinds of skills to make a difference in short series against good teams. The Yankees have another starter, Luis Severino, who is out with a shoulder issue of his own. But the Yankees attribute much of that to bad luck, and Trivino is averaging 12.7 strikeouts per nine innings — a better strikeout rate than any of his new teammates. Even so, the Yankees placed Severino on the 60-day injured list on Monday, which means he cannot be activated until mid-September. Now they have his replacement, with bullpen reinforcements and a new left fielder, too. “He’s got the full arsenal and the weapons and the stuff that you look for in top-of-the-rotation caliber pitchers,” Manager Aaron Boone said. Effross, 28, is not a hard thrower but has a similar assortment of pitches to handle hitters from either side. They will reach the trading deadline on Tuesday at 6 p.m. with the best record in the American League — they were 69-34 before Monday’s game with the Seattle Mariners — and four new players to help when it matters most. The right-handed Montas, 29, served an 80-game suspension in 2019 after testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug. With Chapman pitching in all but one of their postseason victories, the Cubs won it all. “Teams are trying to make a move that will make an impact,” Yankees reliever Aroldis Chapman said through an interpreter on Monday, recalling his trade to the Chicago Cubs in 2016. Only one, J.P. Sears, has played in the majors. The best teams need to do the most work at the baseball trading deadline.

Frankie Montas trade details: Yankees land Luis Castillo backup plan (FanSided)

The Frankie Montas trade will help them in the regular season. The Yankees and Astros should be favorites to meet in the ALCS this year. They made a Frankie Montas trade to make up for that swing and a miss on the former Cincinnati Reds pitcher now competing for the Seattle Mariners.

MLB rumors: Yankees trade for Frankie Montas, Lou Trivino from ... (NBC Sports Bay Area)

After plenty of trade speculation surrounding Athletics starting pitcher Frankie Montas, the ace reportedly is on the move.

Trivino was 1-6 in relief for the A’s this season with a 6.47 ERA and 10 saves in 39 appearances. In return for the two pitchers, the A’s received New York’s No. 5 prospect in Waldichuk, per MLB.com. Medina was ranked No. 10 in the Yankees' system, followed by Sears at No. 20 and Bowman at No. 21. The A's traded Montas and reliever Lou Trevino to the New York Yankees on Monday afternoon, the team announced.

And he’s considered a strong defender. Through 19 starts, Montas is 4-9 but with a 3.18 ERA. He’s struck out 109 batters in 104 2/3 innings. Rodon has been healthy this year, and he’s been excellent, posting a 3.00 ERA in 21 starts with 11.6 K/9. He’s due the remainder of the $21.5 million he’s making this year and, if he doesn’t opt out after the season, he’ll make $22.5 million next year. The Giants’ Carlos Rodon has also been on the Yankees’ radar, but there are concerns about the left-hander’s health (he has a history of arm issues). Whether he’ll opt out of his deal at the end of the season is also an issue, with teams unsure if they’re paying for a rental or for someone who will remain under contract through next season. Montas would hardly be a bad consolation prize — and the expectation is that he will be traded to the team Oakland considers to present the best offer. The Yankees are heavily involved in the sweepstakes to nab A’s starting pitcher Frankie Montas, and it’s believed the team will have to offer highly regarded shortstop prospect Oswald Peraza and more premium pupils to make it happen, a person with knowledge of the team’s personnel decisions told NJ Advance Media.

The Yankees have shored up their rotation for a playoff push, adding righty Frankie Montas and closer Lou Trivino in a deal with Oakland.

Chad Green, Michael King and Zack Britton are all on the 60-day injured list with Green and King expected to miss the rest of the season. Trivino, a 30-year-old right-hander, is 1-6 with a 6.47 ERA -- double his 2021 figure -- and 10 saves in 13 chances. The Yankees won the Montas sweepstakes and add a starter who will slot into a playoff rotation with a fastball-slider-splitter pitch mix that has proved effective all season. Luis Severino has not pitched since July 13 because of a lat strain and was moved to the 60-day injured list Monday along with right-handed reliever Miguel Castro, out since July 10 with a strained right shoulder. Gone out and proved last couple years he is that kind of caliber pitcher." Montas, a 29-year-old who is not eligible for free agency until after the 2023 season, has shown flashes of excellence since signing with Boston in 2009.

The Oakland A's traded right-handed pitcher Frankie Montas ahead of Tuesday's MLB trade deadline.

According to MLB.com, Waldichuk — who played college ball at Saint Mary’s in Moraga — is the top prospect the A’s added in the deal and was ranked as the No. 5 prospect in the Yankees’ farm system. Sears and Waldichuk will go to Las Vegas to play for the Triple-A affiliate. Montas was considered one of the top starters available at this year’s trade deadline because he won’t become a free agent until after the 2023 season, giving him two opportunities to help his new team in playoff pushes. Montas, a right-handed starter with an elite fastball-splitter combination, posted a 3.18 ERA in 19 starts for the A’s this season while striking out more than a batter per inning. “Trading two guys who have been in the organization for a long time was not easy,” A’s general manger David Forst said. The A’s sent Montas and right-handed reliever Lou Trivino to the New York Yankees in exchange for four prospects in what’s expected to be one of the biggest trades of the summer, sources confirm to this news organization.

'Yankees tax' in Frankie Montas trade rumors could push NYY to ... (Yanks Go Yard)

If the Yankees won't trade shortstop Anthony Volpe for Frankie Montas, then they might not acquire the "ace". Will the Giants be more reasonable?

Hell, even Castillo started extremely slow in 2021 and led the NL in walks before rebounding. If nobody beats the Yankees’ current Montas package — which seems to have been offered — then the A’s starter and all his question marks will be theirs. This change in the trade market has led every team that still holds a starting pitcher to recalculate their desires. In terms of true talent, he’s ahead of Montas if available. The New York Yankees are in swift danger of being priced out of a market full of No. 2 starters whose current teams are treating them like aces. Before including Marte, it appeared the Yanks could acquire Castillo — solidly a No. 2, possibly an ace outside the constraints of his home ballpark — for a package centered around Oswald Peraza and Ken Waldichuk. Sadly, the Mariners decided to stir the pot.

The Frankie Montas Trade Pushes the Yankees Closer to the World ... (Sports Illustrated)

New York added the best available starting pitcher and improved its bullpen, while the A's acquired good pitching prospects.

The big name here is 24-year-old Waldichuk, a lefty in Triple A who was No. 5 in the Yankees’ system per MLB Pipeline and No. 3 per FanGraphs. There’s a bit more of a discrepancy with the prospect rankings for Medina, 23. And the return they picked up here looks very similar to what they chased in those other trades this winter—pitchers who are fairly close to playing in the majors. He has an electric arm, but he struggles a bit with his command and could end up as a late-inning reliever instead of the rotation. But they have an obvious focus here—pitchers who can make an impact soon—and they certainly kept with that. But a few injuries have cropped up recently—starter Luis Severino is out with shoulder tightness and reliever Michael King will miss the rest of the season after fracturing his elbow—and the team had its worst month yet in July. It was only wise to seek reinforcements, and in a market that’s not exactly flush with pitching talent, Montas and Trivino are a pairing that made sense to grab. A big part of that has been sticking with a change he made to his pitch mix last season: He’s stopped depending so much on his sinker, previously his most frequent pitch, and has begun to use his four-seamer and splitter more. The 30-year-old Trivino, on the other hand, has scuffled through much of this year. It’s fair to wonder if the A’s could have gotten a splashier return either by making this deal in spring training or by being willing to consider talent that isn’t quite so close to the majors. His 2021 looked like a breakthrough: It was the first time that he pitched more than 100 innings in a season, after dealing with a variety of injuries earlier in his career, and he finished as a down-ballot Cy Young candidate with a 3.37 ERA (122 ERA+). He’s kept that kind of performance going so far this year. Under the Yankees’ coaching staff, Trivino seems like a decent bet to turn things around, and he has two additional seasons under team control after this one. Though he missed two starts last month with a shoulder issue, Montas managed to avoid the IL, and he currently has a 3.18 ERA (118 ERA+). He’ll slot in near the top of the Yankees’ rotation—behind Gerrit Cole—and should be a considerable help down the stretch. They also could use a starter and one more reliever, too.

Oakland A's trading Frankie Montas and Lou Trivino to Yankees (San Francisco Chronicle)

Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Frankie Montas (47) walks back to the dugout after the top of the eighth inning during an MLB game against the Seattle ...

Montas was slated to pitch Tuesday’s series opener in Anaheim. Cole Irvin will start instead and the A’s will adjust the rotation after that. Bowman, a fourth-round draft pick by the Yankees in 2021, was hitting .217/.343/.355 in 80 games at High-A and will report to High-A Lansing. In Oakland, the A’s will need to fill Montas’ rotation spot and Trivino’s late-innings role. Eight of 12 players the A’s received in the spring trades are pitchers. Sears, 26, debuted for the Yankees this season and has a 2.05 ERA over 22 MLB innings. Waldichuk and Sears will report to Triple-A Las Vegas. Waldichuk, 24, who is from San Diego and went to St. Mary’s, has a 3.00 ERA and 13.7 strikeouts per nine innings rate in 50 minor-league games. Montas, a sixth-place AL Cy Young finisher last year, is 4-9 with a 3.18 ERA and 109 strikeouts in 104 ⅔ innings this season. “There’s a chance for anything,” Forst said. The question was which pitching-needy contender would pluck Montas — and Trivino, it turns out — and what Oakland could get in return. He’s 6-3 with a 2.71 ERA and 116 strikeouts in 76 ⅓ innings in 17 starts this season at Double- and Triple-A. The Reds netted Seattle’s two top prospects among four players. So I think we got three pitchers who are very close to, if not already, major-league ready.”

Frankie Montas trade grades: Yankees get 'A' for landing starter and ... (CBS sports.com)

We here at CBS Sports are nothing if not judgmental, and that means offering near-instant analysis on big trades this time of the year. Below, you'll find ...

Sears has an unusually flat release point to the top of the zone, the product of his arm slot, his size, and his ability to get down the mound. Medina will be out of options after this season, according to FanGraphs, meaning he'll be a member of the A's bullpen no later than next spring. Another interesting aspect of this trade for the A's is how they've continued to target pitchers during this rebuild despite their cavernous ballpark seemingly serving as an in-built advantage in enhancing usable arms. Indeed, it ranks 11th in that regard, behind new teammates A.J. Puk and Kirby Snead, leading us to think the A's targeted Sears for that reason, among others. What matters is that he has a full arsenal and some underlying indicators suggesting he might be able to cut it as a starter. While we noted above that the Yankees had to trade two of their top 10 prospects to net Montas and Trivino, it's worth clarifying that the Yankees have thus far been able to avoid dealing away any of their top position player prospects. He can run his fastball into the mid-to-upper 90s and his aforementioned sweeper has generated a 52 percent whiff rate to date, suggesting that he should prioritize it as his main offering heading forward. His fastball clocks in at 96 mph and the slowest pitch in his arsenal is his 86-mph splitter. In 39 appearances this season, he amassed a 6.47 ERA, the worst of his career. They've gained as much on Monday by adding Effross and now Montas and Trivino. The Yankees did have to part with three of their top 10 prospects to make those upgrades happen, according to Baseball America, including their fifth- and and ninth-best youngsters in this deal for Montas. He's a 29-year-old with an additional season of team control remaining who has tallied a 3.49 ERA (117 ERA+) and a 3.43 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 91 appearances dating back to 2018. The Yankees had already made one pitching acquisition on Monday, adding reliever Scott Effross from the Chicago Cubs. Montas and Trivino will join him in reinforcing a staff that has been impacted by injuries.

Reacting to the Yankees' trade for Frankie Montas and Lou Trivino (Pinstripe Alley)

The Yankees gave up some solid prospects for perhaps the best remaining starter on the market and a reliever with upside.

Now, it’s time to to see if Montas and Trivino can truly help right the New York ship that’s been a bit shaky lately. They could still trade Joey Gallo prior to the Deadline, as well, but it appears Brian Cashman has addressed the major needs.— Mark Feinsand (@Feinsand) August 1, 2022 Simply pitching in front of a much better defense than Oakland’s should give Montas (and Trivino) a bump, even if nothing else changes in terms of their stuff or pitch usage. He received a cortisone shot and returned to the rotation on July 21. It probably stung GM Brian Cashman the most to send over Ken Waldichuk. The left-handed pitcher has seen his stock soar since spring training, and he is now considered one of the Yankees’ best pitching prospects and a top prospect in MLB overall. One of the positives of the deal is that unlike with the Andrew Benintendi deal, the Yankees didn’t trade for a pending free agent. Lou Trivino has a 6.47 ERA in 32 innings this year but is good at getting swing-and-miss, apparently. Evidently, the Yankees like his peripherals, and probably think they can make him ever better. But the rotation is stronger today than yesterday.— Jack Curry (@JackCurryYES) August 1, 2022 The team needed a surer thing to slot behind Cole, especially with Sevy announced as not returning until mid-September at earliest. They may not want to use him in the playoff rotation at all. Yesterday, they acquired starting pitcher Frankie Montas and reliever Lou Trivino from the Oakland Athletics for JP Sears and prospects Ken Waldichuk, Luis Medina, and Cooper Bowman.
