The Astros are adding backstop depth ahead of the Trade Deadline, agreeing to a deal with the Red Sox for catcher Christian Vázquez on Monday. Houston sent two Minor Leaguers, IF Enmanuel Valdez and OF Wilyer Abreu, back to Boston in the deal. Vázquez is a surehanded catcher who can provide offensive production as well, and he won a World Series with Boston in 2018. Astros add backstop depth in deal for Vázquez
BOSTON -- The sale in Boston is underway. Prior to their game in Houston on Monday night, the Red Sox worked out a trade of catcher Christian Vazquez to the ...
The 31-year-old Vazquez has only played for the Red Sox in his big league career, which dates back to 2014. The Red Sox entered Monday in last place in the AL East, though they are still alive in the wild-card race -- a spot which should lead to them selling some players on the final year of their contracts while retaining enough talent on the roster to continue to compete over the season's final two months. He was a ninth round pick of the Red Sox in the 2008 draft out of the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy. He had been the longest-tenured player in the organization.
The Red Sox are finalizing deals to trade catcher Christian Vázquez to the Astros, and acquire outfielder Tommy Pham from the Reds, according to ESPN.
Vázquez will be able to just switch clubhouses as Boston is in Houston for a series.
In an odd coincidence, the Red Sox are set to take on the Astros beginning Monday night. Chaim Bloom's team may only be 3 1/2 games back in the wild card race, yet it appears he's willing to trade impending free agents if the return is right. Abreu, meanwhile, is a 23-year-old outfielder who BA ranked 21st in the system based on his power and on-base skills.
That option was eventually exercised by the club, with Vazquez now just a few months away from reaching free agency for the first time. Boston looked like ...
Valdez, 23, is an infielder who is having a breakout season in the minors. Mark Berman of Fox 26 was first to report the Astros were acquiring Vazquez in exchange for two prospects. Castro has been far worse, slashing .115/.205/.179 for a wRC+ of just 15. Vazquez was one such name, with J.D. Martinez and Nathan Eovaldi among the others. It seems there won’t be a tidy answer, with the club trying to walk a line between buying and selling. In the immediate term, they add a pair of interesting young players to the farm system. The Astros have shown themselves to be quite fond of Maldonado in terms of his game calling and clubhouse presence, but he’s hit just .173/.239/.342 on the year for a wRC+ of 66. If not for a dismal season last year, those numbers would look even better, as he’s posted a wRC+ of 102 or higher in 2019, 2020 and here in 2022. That option was eventually exercised by the club, with Vazquez now just a few months away from reaching free agency for the first time. Since that time, he’s reached the majors and established himself as a solid regular. Given all of those factors, the Sox began entertaining offers and evidently found one to their liking. Boston looked like contenders for much of the season but had a dismal showing in July, going 8-19, dropping to the basement of the AL East and 3 1/2 games out of a playoff spot.
The Astros have reportedly acquired Red Sox veteran catcher Christian Vazquez as they pursue another World Series title.
He's as sound as they come defensively and brings more championship swagger to an Astros team with title aspirations, winning the 2018 World Series with Boston. A Red Sox spokesman eventually stepped in to relieve the catcher from sorting through his feelings in real-time. This means the Red Sox are at least somewhat operating as sellers at the trade deadline. What this means for the Red Sox What this means for the Astros The 31-year-old backstop is hitting .282 with eight home runs and 42 RBI on the season, starting 73 games behind the plate for the Red Sox.
Berman reported the Red Sox will receive two minor league prospects. Houston and Boston face off Monday night at Minute Maid Park, and Vazquez was taking ...
Martin Maldonado is a poor hitter across his career, with an OPS+ of 72 in 12 seasons, per Baseball Reference, and this year has been more of the same. The trade comes as little surprise, and the bigger shock would've been if he remained in Boston through Tuesday's 6 p.m. ET deadline. Vazquez's defensive value is a little more limited. Vazquez is in the final season of his three-year, $13.4 million contract and the Red Sox are last in the American League East at 51-52. Houston and Boston face off Monday night at Minute Maid Park, and Vazquez was taking batting practice when news of the trade broke. The Houston Astros acquired Christian Vazquez from the Boston Red Sox for minor leaguers Enmanuel Valdez and Wilyer Abreu on Monday.

The Red Sox reportedly started their deadline activitiy by trading Christian Vázquez to the Astros while he warmed for a game in Houston.
“Since day one, he got to this organization and for the four years I managed him, he was amazing. “I’m very proud of him,” Cora said. “I feel like this is my home,” he said at the time. “And we’re going to continue that. It’s part of the business. This is business.
We're getting down to the wire ahead of the MLB trade deadline and now-former Red Sox catcher Christian Vazquez was one of the latest dominos to fall.
It's not often trades take a player between clubhouses like this, but Vazquez seemingly found out about the trade while he was on the field for warmups. Vazquez was clearly still taking the trade in — he's spent all eight years of his MLB career with the Red Sox and was the team's longest-tenured member — as he was talking to the media, so it's no wonder the PR representative stepped in. Red Sox catcher Christian Vazquez was interviewed right after he found out he was traded to the Houston Astros.
I know social media works fast, but…you just have to," wrote Dan Roche. If the trade was that far down the line…pending physical, etc…someone from the Red Sox should have been told to come get him off the field. Before he could even confirm the news with his team, reporters swarmed Vazquez to ask him questions.

He’s not in the Red Sox dugout because he’s not a member of the team. He did not appear in the tunnel outside the clubhouse in the hour before the game unlike reliever Jake Diekman, who made a phone call after he was traded to the White Sox in a separate trade. He was scratched from Boston’s lineup six minutes before first pitch and the Red Sox announced the deal at 8:12 p.m. ET, two minutes after the game against the Astros started. Martinez said he was hitting in the cage in the bowels of Minute Maid Park when he first heard the news. As word broke around 6:27 p.m. ET that the Astros and Red Sox were finalizing a trade involving Vázquez, the catcher took batting practice with the team as if nothing out of the ordinary was happening. Vázquez wasn’t just traded from the only organization he has ever known Monday night.
The 2022 MLB trade deadline is upon us. Across the majors, the hot stove is heating up. The Juan Soto saga is sizzling, the Wilson Contreras sweepstakes ...
The Red Sox have been one of the most pathetic teams in baseball over the past month. But, as is always the case with the Astros, that wasn’t the end of the intrigue. Across the majors, the hot stove is heating up.
Vazquez, the longest-tenured player in Boston, was still clearly taking in news of the trade.
That led to an awkward moment in pregame, in which media members at Minute Maid Park asked the still-processing Vazquez what he thought of the trade. Houston, meanwhile, further bolstered its chances of a deep playoff run shortly after adding power hitter Trey Mancini from Baltimore. Vazquez, who has 73 starts this season, stands to slot in ahead of a struggling Martin Maldonado as Houston's primary catcher. (Boston won Monday's contest, 3-2).
The former Red Sox catcher posted a farewell on his Instagram account.
The Red Sox and Astros are set to face off again Tuesday night at Minute Maid Park as they continue their series in Houston. I look forward to playing for Astros Fans and taking it all the way! The coaches, clubhouse staff, trainers, and teammates who became my family during my time in all of the Red Sox teams, I am forever grateful, for you helped me when I was away from my family and I felt supported by you.

Former Red Sox catcher Christian Vazquez had plenty of emotions to work through as he said goodbye to Boston after nearly 15 years in the organization.
I went through all the minor league teams, from the extended rookie season, Lowell Spinners, Greenville Drive, Salem Red Sox, Portland Sea Dogs, and the Pawtucket Red Sox, and I have so much to be grateful for. Starting back in 2008 when I was drafted by the Red Sox and I left home at 17. Reporters in Houston captured teammates consoling Vazquez ahead of Monday night's Red Sox-Astros game as they prepared to part with the longest-tenured member of the organization.
