“But certainly, above and beyond that, we all know Philly's impact extends beyond just that. “But I appreciate each and every one of y’all for the support the last couple years. During a postgame TV interview, Phillips dropped the line that encapsulates his joyful approach to the game -- and started a merchandise line: “Baseball is fun.” All I ask is you guys continue to go out there and support the Rays. I’ve seen this fanbase grow in the last couple years, and it’s been awesome. Like, this is a day that I'll remember, and I want to make the most of it.” He quickly forged a deep connection with Rays fans, emerged as a relentlessly upbeat and encouraging teammate, provided plenty of entertainment with his highlight-reel defensive plays (and often hilarious pitching appearances) and came through with one of the most memorable hits in franchise history. And this is what we felt was best for the club at this point.” “We'll miss everything about him in those respects, but at the end of the day, there are times where we have to make some difficult decisions. From an emotional standpoint, the move hit harder than you’d expect for an outfielder batting just .147 with a .475 OPS and a nearly 41 percent strikeout rate. Phillips, 28 years old and out of Minor League options, has continued to play excellent defense this season, but he’s struggled at the plate and would have further ceded playing time to Siri and the recently acquired Roman Quinn.\n\n“From just purely an evaluation of the talent and the contributions, that part, it's a tough call,” Neander said. Inside the Rays’ clubhouse, players and staff did the same before taking the field for their pregame workout. Before Tampa Bay’s 6-4 win over Cleveland, thousands of the 22,756 fans filing into Tropicana Field put on giveaway Devil Rays basketball jerseys with Phillips’ name and No. 35 on the back.

The Seminole native had some huge moments with his hometown team and smiled on his way out. The acquisition from Houston arrives with immense potential.

And we think he’s got a shot for that to be the case.” And nothing we’ll ever take for granted and appreciate every bit of it.” And it’s a wonderful perspective to have around. He also made highlight reels with his acrobatic defense, entertaining work on the mound as an occasional pitcher and humorous interviews. “Probably realistically, the answer is somewhere in the middle of that,” Neander said. He did, though, deliver one of the franchise’s highlight moments, the hit that led to the wild walkoff win over the Dodgers in Game 4 of the 2020 World Series. Follow our Tampa Bay Times sports team on His approach to this, and just how he appreciates it, it’s special. “But certainly we all know ‘Philly’s’ impact extended beyond just that.” It’s a source of entertainment. ... If Siri can hit consistently (even at a 80-90 wRC+ level) he will be a fantastic starting CF for the Tampa Bay Rays for the next several years. At this point, his amazing run with the Rays has come to an end. (Some Astros fans nicknamed him Carlos Gomez lite) admittedly he’s the type of player you like or when he’s on your team, but when he’s admiring his HR for forever, you can see who’s other teams fans would hate him when he plays against you. Siri is currently tied with 7% Success Rate Added, tied for most in all of baseball with Jonathan Schoop and Brett Phillips (ironically). He has something like 7 career homers and the shortest one of the 7 is like 410’. Very exuberant personality. On Baseball Savant there is a stat measuring success rate in terms of defensive plays vs estimated success rate, and comparing the difference. For 2023, Seth Johnson will be needed to add to the 40-man roster, but will miss most if not all of the 2023 season. Murray has been a fast-mover so far thanks to his excellent control and command. For the Rays they would have to either keep him on the 40-man roster spot for the other year (and then several more as he develops) or put him on the 60-Day IL starting his service time clock. RHP Seth Johnson is the top prospect the Rays gave up, ranked number 9 on Baseball America’s mid-season Rays ranking. The Rays, Astros, and Orioles matched up on a big three-team trade. However, this year in Bowling Green (Single-A Advanced) Johnson had forearm inflammation and will be undergoing Tommy John Surgery. This puts Johnson in a very precarious place developmentally and especially tricky for any contending team like the Rays.

My Two Cents: Brett Phillips Did His Job, Made Baseball Fun Again (Sports Illustrated)

He reveled in all the good things that happened with his teammates and he was a terrific clubhouse presence. - SLUMP BUSTERS: Tampa Bay outfielder Brett Phillips has been struggling for nearly a month now, with just two hits in 32 at-bats and a lot of strikeouts. He took it all with grace, of course, and even posted a 38-second video thanking Rays fans for all the support. For those who know the local hero best, it couldn't happen to a nicer guy.CLICK HERE He debuted in September and helped the Rays throughout the postseason. Through it all, he was a solid defensive player and baserunner, but in the end, it wasn't enough to keep him around. He had a hard time believing that he was so popular, and that the Rays thought its fan base would enjoy it so much. Tampa Bay Rays outfielder and occasional emergency pitcher had a week so memorable that he went viral on social media three days in a row for three dramatically different things. And if this is it with his hometown team for Brett Phillips, it's been quite a run. But on Saturday morning, laughter and joking and frivolity had returned to the Rays' locker room — and it was much needed. The Rays had lost six of seven games and their grip on a playoff spot was slipping away. A lot of things were going wrong — injuries, slumps, demotions — and tenseness and stress was starting to take over for a team on the skids.

Rays' Brett Phillips Drawing Interest From Multiple Clubs (MLB Trade Rumors)

Rays outfielder Brett Phillips, who was DFA'ed on Monday, is drawing trade interest from at least three teams. Read more at MLB Trade Rumors.

For all of Phillips’ struggles with the bat, he’s long been one of the game’s premier defenders. Speculatively, there are plenty of other potential fits even beyond the three teams reported to have inquired. He’s out of minor league options, so he’ll need to stick on the roster of whatever club potentially acquires him. It’s been a dismal season at the plate for Phillips, who’s hitting just .147/.225/.250 through 208 plate appearances and has fanned at a whopping 40.9% rate. Brendan Kuty of NJ.com adds the Yankees as another interested club. The Rays designated outfielder Brett Phillips for assignment yesterday upon acquiring outfielder Jose Siri from the Astros, and while a team normally has a week to trade a player following a DFA, that’s not the case with today’s 6pm ET deadline looming.

Tampa Bay Rays: Brett Phillips sends classy message after DFA (Call to the Pen)

The Tampa Bay Rays designated outfielder Brett Phillips for assignment, but the Florida native was all smiles on a video he posted to Twitter.

And don’t forget that Phillips went 3-for-7 in the Rays’ World Series run of the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, meaning he has some postseason potential as well. From his unique warmup before entering the game as a position player pitching to a moment when he met an 8-year-old girl batting cancer and hit a home run while she was telling the television announcers how Phillips was her favorite player, Phillips has had some memorable moments with the Rays. It’s likely that Phillips will land with another team in the not-too-distant future, as his personality and potential on the field will be hard for another team to pass up.
