Las Vegas flooding: Multiple casinos, entire Strip, airport under water (New York Post)

Airports, parking lots, and the entire Las Vegas Strip, which houses some of the world's most famous casinos and hotels, were flooded Thursday night.

Earlier on Thursday, Harry Reid International Airport departure delays were averaging 50 minutes. Video footage shared on Twitter shows the streets of Sin City consumed with floodwater. “We’ve got good drainage systems but sometimes the water just overloads them,” Jowitt, who hails from Las Vegas, told The Post. “It can also be dangerous for homeless people who sometimes live in the drainage systems for shelter.” “Lightning was nearly constant, and the power went out several times,” he told The Post. “Electric surges set the fire alarms of several buildings off, causing fire responders to have to head out into the storm to respond to them.” Simon Jowitt, an economic geologist and professor at the University of Las Vegas, told The Post that while flash floods don’t happen too often, Nevadans do anticipate monsoon season from July to September. Alexander Wolf, a Las Vegas resident, told The Post he saw “curtains” of rainfall outside his window.

Intense thunderstorms drench Southwest, causing water to cascade ... (CBS News)

The annual weather pattern known as the monsoon has brought a parade of storms to cities across the U.S. Southwest.

Jacquetta Brown was walking on a trail in Canyon de Chelly near Chinle, Arizona, this week when heavy rain swept through and she spotted the red truck partially submerged. "That can make a significant impact on drought." The National Weather Service said parts of Arizona can expect 1 to 2 inches of rain per hour before a flood watch expired Saturday morning. Las Vegas firefighters responded to 330 calls for service and swift-water teams rescued seven people between 9 p.m. and midnight, city spokesman Jace Radke said. "We still need the rains and all that and we really need the monsoons around here," said Henneman, who is staying with family while his house dries out. One video showed a man continuing to gamble at a casino slot machine while water fell around him. Scattered power outages were reported in places including the downtown Fremont Street Experience casino pedestrian mall. So, yeah, when it does rain, we're in fear." But it's not just the Southwest: in Kentucky, 16 people have been reported dead following severe flooding, and another person was killed amid heavy rainfall in St. Louis. Mohave County sheriff's officials rescued a woman who was clinging to a stop sign earlier this week after her car was swept away. Bret Henneman estimates he has about 3,500 sandbags around his home just north of Flagstaff where two wildfires burned this spring. There's plenty of more opportunities for thunderstorms to develop."

Las Vegas firefighters responded to 330 calls for service and swift-water teams rescued at least seven people, city spokesman Jace Radke said. Little precipitation easily creates flooding in Las Vegas since the water doesn't seep into the desert terrain.
