She won an Emmy award in 1993 for her supporting role in the TV series "I'll Fly Away." She won a Tony Award for her portrayal of Rose Maxson in the Broadway production of "Fences" in 1987 before gaining even more nationwide fame playing dorm mother Lettie Bostic on the first two seasons of "A Different World." CHICAGO (CBS) -- Tony and Emmy winning actress Mary Alice, known for her roles in the Broadway production of August Wilson's "Fences" and the "Cosby Show" spinoff "A Different World," has died at age 85.

In 1966, she booked her first paid acting job in theater, per THR, and TV roles soon followed. Alice had a decades-long career in film and television, but she got her start in the classroom. Alice went on to book TV movies and recurring roles on series like Sanford and Son and The Doctors. In 1976, she starred in the Supremes movie Sparkle, playing Effie.

The " A Different World" actress died of natural causes in her residence in Manhattan at the age of 85 after over six decades of work.

Later, she went on to play in equally iconic films such as The Matrix Revolutions as Oracle, The Inkwell, Down in the Delta, Malcolm X and many others. After graduating from Chicago Teacher’s College and working as a school teacher for a short time, she made the decision to become an actress. Born in Indianola, Mississippi and raised in Chicago, Mary Alice’s career spanned over six decades across television, film and theater.

The critically acclaimed actress was born in Indianola, Mississippi where she started her career in local theatre before moving to the Big Apple.
