Bailee Madison & Chandler Kinney Tease Terror of 'Pretty Little ... (TV Insider)

Can we get an “A”-men?! Because Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin is a guilty pleasure that perfectly moves the property into a scary new territory.

Built around a tragedy that claimed a Millwood student 22 years ago, this PLL places the daughters of those involved—pregnant Imogen ( Bailee Madison), aspiring filmmaker Tabby ( Chandler Kinney), juvie alum and jock-ish Noa ( Maia Reficco), internet denizen Mouse ( Malia Pyles) and ballet hopeful Faran (Zaria)—in the crosshairs of a masked maniac known as “A” who knows all of their secrets. It’s a grungy, dimly lit, low-rent hamlet in Pennsylvania that looks and feels as dangerous as it is depressed. Obviously set in the same universe that gave us Aria, Emily, Spencer, Hanna and Alison, the town of Millwood is basically the upside-down of the first iteration’s glam Philly suburb.

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin Births Multiple Mysteries in Series ... (TVLine)

'A' new generation of PLLs emerged on Thursday with the premiere of HBO Max's 'Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin.'

The countdown is on.” It’s horrifying, though not half as horrifying as when Davie’s teenage daughter Imogen (Bailee Madison) discovers her mother dead in the bathtub with the letter “A” scrawled in blood on the wall. This text, coupled with the sight of an absolute creep staring at her from a distance, prompts Noa to alert Sheriff Beasley (Eric Johnson)… but he’s too busy getting serviced by a young man in his squad car to care, so she just kind of walks away. One of the grown women, Davie (played by Carly Pope), finds an old invitation from the infamous party taped to her front door with a charming note: “Gone but not forgotten. Well, that question is pretty much the whole point of the show, so buckle up — we’re in for a long ride. (Minor spoiler alert: It’s explained in Episode 3 that the actual “sin” in this case was that none of Angela’s supposed friends even bothered to call 9-1-1, leaving her corpse to rot for days. Staying true to its title, the premiere begins with a flashback to New York’s Eve 1999, the night of the original sin.

The original show is not even on Netflix anymore and you cannot watch the new series on the platform either. The first three episodes released on July 28 and new episodes will come out every Thursday. Despite the similar premises, the new show promises to be more mature and far more terrifying than the Freeform series that aired for seven seasons.

'Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin' Episode 1 Recap: "Spirit Week" (Decider)

Within the first 10 minutes, Original Sin has already racked up a considerable body count.

As Karen terrorizes the student body with her bid for Spirit Queen, we get our first glimpses of the series’ other three Liars. There’s Noa (Maia Reficco), a track star who spent the summer in juvie on drug charges; Mouse (Malia Pyles), a shy computer whiz who seems more than a little intrigued by the school’s upcoming “Coming Out Day”; and Faran (Zaria), a star ballerina who’s been tapped to play the coveted role of the Black Swan, much to Karen’s dismay. Did she commit suicide out of fear or guilt over what happened to Angela? Or is the creepy masked figure that haunts the entire series involved in some way? Convinced that Imogen made out with her boyfriend Greg some months before, Karen has just now decided to drop by and pick up her stuff. Original Sin moves the action away from the familiar town of Rosewood, to the new but not-so-distant blue-collar town of Millwood, Pennsylvania. After opening with the evening of Angela’s fateful demise, we jump forward to catch up with an adult Davie (Carly Pope), who cruelly brushed her so-called friend away minutes before her demise. But the IP gods must be satiated, and creators Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa ( Riverdale) and Lindsay Calhoon Bring ( The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) have the good sense to fully lean into the horror that the original series flirted with but never quite fully embraced. After all, its predecessor has only been off the air for five short years, and there’s certainly no shortage of new teen dramas for fans to sink their teeth into.

To get back at Karen for allegedly mocking them after landing them in detention, the Liars screen the embarrassing footage in front of a decent chunk of the student body. “I wanted to be nice and talk to her, but I also needed to really stay in the moment. While Bechtel filmed as Kelly, “they had a background person and they put her in a wig, and I’m just holding the body of this girl,” she recalls. Only Karen never gets to see her plan come to fruition, because “A” chokes her out in the rafters and drops her corpse onto the dance floor below. It was so early in the process. Allow me to set the scene: Upon removing herself from the running for Spirit Queen, Karen intends to pull a classic Carrie by dropping a bucket of “pig’s blood” on Imogen during her crowning moment.

'Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin' Bosses on [Spoiler's] Death (TV Insider)

Co-creators Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon Bring also address a major test for the Liars' friendship.

One of the things that I think is surprising is — of course we play it for the fun caper of, is it one twin, is it the other, and Mallory is such an amazing actress — that we do play the emotional story of those twins. In the end, the girls do decide to stick together (though there is no disciplinary hearing because Kelly comes forward about the planned prank, explaining why Karen was up in the rafters). I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say Karen dies for not just her behavior in the present but also for her connection to the original sin in the past,” he continues. With twins, the question has to come up of whether that was even Karen who died. “It seems like A is trying to avenge something from the past. But I think even in Episode 7 or 8, as the girls are starting to put together all of these disparate pieces from the past, the present, the question is, why did A kill Karen?” co-creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa tells TV Insider.

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin Series-Premiere Recap: Oh, Mother (Vulture)

Original Sin understands all the weird, wild details that made the original a pop culture phenomenon. A recap of “Chapter One: Spirit Week,” the premiere of ...

Reading Clanton’s “other students” comment as a euphemism for “Karen Beasley,” Imogen goes on the warpath, confronting Karen loudly in the cafeteria about her bitchiness (and, as a bitter aside, her boyfriend’s cowardice), then doubling down on her own continued presence at Millwood High by vowing to run for, and win, Spirit Queen — just like her mom. • Slasher A lures the school janitor to their evil lair (on school premises, naturally) at the 45-minute mark and brutally murders him … and then it’s never discussed again! • A hearty welcome back to the kinds of arts curriculum and cultural events that could only happen in a small Pennsylvanian town hell-bent on terrorizing its teen girl population. That Imogen doesn’t seem to have an actual OB-GYN to turn to in private, and that the school nurse then went and told the school principal what Imogen had been asking about, though? We won’t fully understand the reason for Karen’s ire until the next episode, but we know enough right now to understand that it has something to do with her boyfriend and Imogen kissing at some party in the not-too-distant past. On the day we meet Noa at her “job,” she sees Slasher A creeping in their herringbone boiler suit and leather murder mask inside a nearby warehouse, and in going to report it to Sheriff Beasley, accidentally catches him in the process of forcing one of the teen boys on the community service line to give him a blow job. As for Imogen, as if it’s not enough to both be a pregnant teen and a recent (scandal-adjacent) orphan, she’s got Karen literally breathing down her neck, trying to make her feel extra worthless because of it. An evident loner who finds more comfort in the internet than in the real world, she’s shocked into socializing when a very friendly, very cute guy named Ash taps her on the shoulder in the computer lab and personally invites her to the next Spectrum Club meeting. She does at least have her clearly smitten best friend, Chip (Carson Rowland), on her side, but that’s small comfort, as not even being both white and male confers on him enough power, as a teenager, to effectively push back against either their teacher or Wes (Derek Klena), their 36-year-old manager at the Orpheum Theater who also has an obvious crush on Tabby (though this one, at least, is presented as Bad). Why, specifically, is something we don’t know yet (much like why Imogen and Karen aren’t friends anymore or what the backstory of Imogen’s pregnancy is), but Pretty Little Liars is a franchise known for being a slow burn — we’ll get there eventually. To quote Imogen: “Gross.” There’s a knock at the door and Imogen stands to get it, in the process revealing a medium-small baby bump. She’s here to collect the last of her things from Imogen’s closet before the two put the final, bitter bow on their former friendship, but first, she’s got to give Davie an envelope she (again, apparently!) just found stuck on the Adams’ front door.

'Pretty Little Liars Original Sin' Episode 2 Recap: "The Spirit Queen" (Decider)

It’s Mouse who first notices Karen waiting with a bucket of red paint in the wings, but soon, the girls’ attention turns to the masked figure that emerges behind her. According to her official character description, Mouse spends most of her time online “having survived a childhood trauma.” Hopefully, the rest of the Liars will get more of the flashback-ridden backstory that’s been exclusively reserved for Imogen thus far. It turns out that Imogen has been holding onto a phone with a compromising video of her ex-best friend, with the potential to “destroy” her. Soon enough, a mortified Karen runs for the exit as the girls intended. At the very least, Original Sin dropping three episodes at once makes the Liars’ slow discovery of “A” a tad less frustrating. The videos extinguish any lingering doubts that they had about their revenge scheme, which I guess is preferable to admitting that a masked creep is lurking around every corner.

So it was interesting initially auditioning for Karen because I really felt like I had that character down and I was very excited to do that character, and I just had this one scene as Kelly. And so for the callback, I sat down with the little information I had and I was like, "All right, let's figure out every tiny little difference between these two people." Yeah. I always assumed it was going to be at the very end of the season because I was like, "She's such a huge character surely that's a season finale event!" It's the first time I got to be on a set for more than a week or two weeks. What was it actually like to be part of the PLL universe? I had a completely different vision of what it was going to look like. But he's just so fun, so sweet, not a creepy bone in his body, except when we start doing the scene, and all I can hear is him breathing through the mask. So I was obsessed with it when I was a kid. But I bought the book when I was way too young, and was obsessed with it. But in my mind I was like, "Okay, well the other twin will be the less important twin, clearly." I saw that cover with the doll on it, and I was obsessed with Coraline at the time, and it just looked so creepy. So I originally auditioned for just Karen, but they included in the description that she has a twin. I bought the first book when I was in fourth grade.

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa discusses the HBO Max original series Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin and what to expect from the new series/

That’s the tension that’s keeping alive in the show, that very universal journey of “oh, this is what my parents really are like,” if that makes sense. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa: When you’re a kid, you have certain ideas of who your parents are, and you look at them a certain way. We wanted to explore the messiness and the ugliness of some of the things our characters do. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa: For me, I think you fall in love with the characters, and I think you fall in love with these actors, these actresses. But, we also wanted to explore just kind of the daily horrors of moving through the world right now in 2022, 2021, being a young woman moving through the world where there are villains and dangers everywhere you look. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa: This is a very different version of “A” if you’ve seen the original series.

Bailee Madison is Imogen Adams, a pregnant teenager grappling with the fallout following a family tragedy. There Are Already So Many Theories About A's Identity On 'PLL ... (Elite Daily)

We may not be in Rosewood anymore, but the gruesome mystery at the center of the Pretty Little Liars universe is more twisted than ever in HBO Max's sequel ...

It seemed pretty notable that the flashback to the Y2K party showed Angela going up to Sydney specifically and begging her to look at her. Most notably, she’s the only Liar who didn’t get a specifically threatening text from A when the group was deciding whether to screen that embarrassing video of Karen. And speaking of that, Tabby was the one who seemed most passionate about showing the video prior to A’s blackmail texts. Listen, Wes is a hardcore creep who clearly has his sights set on Tabby. Is he enough of a creep to throw on a mask and terrorize everyone close to Tabby so that he can form some sort of demented relationship with her? There’s nobody on Original Sin more filled with rage than Sheriff Beasley, and he hasn’t made his seething hatred for the five Liars a secret at all. After all, going after the daughters of the girls who tortured her own daughter has its own sort of twisted revenge logic. If you’ve already torn through the first three episodes that HBO Max dropped on July 28, then you’re probably already putting together tons of theories about A’s identity on Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin. It’s time to suss out the prime suspects as they stand after the premiere ep.

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin Recap: Full Circle (Vulture)

We get our first big group entrance to an arcane school event! A recap of “Chapter One: The Spirit Queen,” episode two of season one of the HBO Max series, ...

(“It was kind of our thing,” she explains to a confused Tabitha on the next morning’s walk to school.) What this gets us is the missing piece of the flashback story that started the episode and the video, both of which were apparently a lot of buildup for nothing: Karen didn’t take her clothes off; Imogen didn’t kiss Greg. Better yet, Imogen was the one who saved Karen, having walked in on the pair after doubling back to get her sweater, which then allowed her to stop Karen and steal the phone before she could undo a single button. Tabby’s wearing the first shorts-suit in history to not look like a joke. Of course, planning to kill Karen at the Spirit Week dance and actually getting everyone there to see it happen are two entirely different propositions. But more importantly, a useful red herring, as the skulking presence of ol’ leatherface a couple hundred feet from where Imogen eventually leaves Karen, upset and alone, is meant to make us believe that Karen’s about to meet her demise at the hands of Slasher A. Ali disappeared (and was, briefly, murdered) the night she was wearing that storied yellow top, remember! Frustratingly, none of the Final Girls are as remorseful of their actions as one would want them to be in this situation — and not just because it would be better if they were collectively kinder people. But also, in this case, the answer is yes! If it wasn’t obvious from the moment Imogen told the rest of the girls the video even existed that this was going to be an awful idea, the inevitable appearance of Slasher A skulking behind the theater screen would be enough of a red flag. In this case, the answer is no. That’s a testament to the fact that Imogen is also a wounded teenager, and teenagers have a clinically demonstrable weakness in robust critical forethought. The video, which starts as a tricksy “Vote for Karen for Spirit Queen!” campaign ad, turns into a short reel of a drunk Karen trying to make some unseen boy laugh by talking shit about her boyfriend then making it as though she’s going to take her top off for the phone owner’s personal-viewing pleasure. No sooner have the Final Girls all shut themselves in their respective rooms than Slasher A is on their phones, texting them videos they assume are from Karen, taunting them over “her” Machiavellian victory. Unfortunately, that brief shock of parental care is all the time Slasher A needs to scupper Imogen’s “let’s sleep on it” plans.

The first three episodes of Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin debuted on HBO Max on July 28, 2022. In ten episodes, the series hopes to accomplish everything the original set out to do, which seems like a hard sell. The television series took a step back from this approach, which may have made it more accessible in the long run, but this new edition to the franchise is unafraid to recreate homages to classic slashers in some of its scenes. With the three episodes that are currently out, it is hard to tell. This show shifts its setting to the Rust Belt, thus subtly delegating its protagonists to a more quote-on-quote average American teenager. The girls are rarely seen interacting with each other one-on-one, so they lack a genuine friendship outside of what is happening to them. This direct reference is bridged through one of the protagonists, an obsessed cinephile with a penchant for comparing what is happening to them to her favorite nineties movies. It will be the first of the franchise that will not air on ABC Family/Freeform. While Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin orbits around the same concepts and universe as the original series took place in, the writers chose to create a completely new cast and storyline to bring new life to something that is already done before and well-loved by a large demographic. But because they are strangers with a lot of deep secrets that will slowly come to the surface, the viewer does not spend enough time with them as individuals to truly care about them on their own. A group of girls who ignore her during the party, and throughout their entire shared high school experience, are rocked to their core when the girl publicly commits suicide at the party. Fans of the original series will recognize this as trademark A behavior, although updated for a more contemporary feel. In 2010, the popular Pretty Little Liars book series, aimed at young adult women, launched as a television series and quickly became a smash hit.

'Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin' Episode 3 Recap: "Aftermath" (Decider)

For as long as there have been teen shows, viewers have debated: How much do we actually want to see the adults in these kids' lives?

Sidney describes her as “one of those unlucky girls,” who lived a lonely life with a mentally ill mother until she and her friends tried to befriend her… When she and Tabby agree to stake out the warehouse the next day, they’re surprised not by a masked creep, but by an utterly familiar face: Sidney, who admits that she still swings by to pay her respects. She checks out a copy of her mother’s senior yearbook, coming across Angela’s story and a mysterious “Y2K Survivors Club” for the first time. Faran butts heads with her high-powered mother’s demands that she move to her home in Pittsburgh, arguing that she wants to control her life “more than she already does.” Noa’s mom is coping in her own way, which Noa finally confesses to Shawn in a moment of vulnerability — she took the fall and went to juvie to cover up her mother’s own drug use.The Liars’ actions have put Noa in a uniquely difficult position, where she’s on her last strike with both the school and the law. With Karen’s death labeled a suicide, he blames the girls for pushing her over the edge with their movie theater stunt. But ignoring the adults is impossible on PLL: Original Sin, whose central mystery is directly tied to generations of Millwood women and their darkest secrets.

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin Recap: Blood on the Dance Floor (Vulture)

A tough episode for our girl Kelly. A recap of “Chapter Three: Aftermath,” episode three of season one of the HBO Max series, 'Pretty Little Liars: Original ...

Which we see proof of twice in this third episode, first when she shuts down Imogen trying to frame Wes as “the cute one,” and then again when it seems like maybe Wes had roofied the wine (which, I don’t think he has), and she has a come-to-Aria moment and yeets herself out of there, spying and stealing the USB stick back on her way out the door while Wes has his back turned in the kitchen. Because, as she tells Imogen, when the two sit down for a heart-to-heart on some swings at the end of the episode, it was her idea for Karen to “pull a Carrie,” and so her fault that Karen’s dead. “I thought it was A??” Tabitha asks when Imogen explains her theory, to which Imogen responds, “Either? Both? I’m not sure.” And if that’s not the perfect distillation of a PLL mystery, I don’t know what is. • Something else I’ve completely skipped over is whatever the hell it is Tabitha is doing with that hidden GoPro in the boys’ locker room, which has captured footage of a lot of naked minors. Oh, and also, he’s heard she’s “using again.” This leads, later that day, to the second update, which is Noa telling him her biggest, most devastating secret: when she was arrested, it was because she was covering for her mom. Some are warmer than others — like, by a lot, considering Faran’s starts out “I didn’t like you!” — but the warmth of their sentiment and the honesty of their regret is the same. Then Tabitha chimes in with the USB stick containing The Video in hand to say that she’s just as guilty and just as ready to accept expulsion to save everyone else. Limited as it may yet be, given what the first couple confabs of the Y2K Mom Squad seem to indicate elsewhere in the episode (and which Imogen is canny enough to suspect from measuring the gaps in Sidney’s story), it’s nevertheless an enormous breath of fresh air. First, she tried inviting Imogen to Karen’s funeral, but that backfired when her weeping mom saw Imogen and started screaming curses at her that God might take Imogen’s child away to Hell the same way Imogen took Karen from her. Back in the hallway, finally all together again, the Final Girls press Imogen for literally any answers she can give about what the hell just happened, the camera panning in a continuous and nauseating loop around the circle the whole time. Unsurprisingly, the most important parent-daughter talk happens at the Hayworths’ house — and not just because both Tabitha and Imogen now live there, but because with Davie gone (RIP), it’s apparently Sidney who’s next in line as the Y2K Mom Squad’s narrative anchor. Tabitha shakes her from her shock and pulls her off the stage to follow everyone else racing from the gym.

How to Watch 'Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin': Where to Stream the ... (Collider.com)

Find out how you can watch the Pretty Little Liars spinoff series Original Sin, where it's streaming, what it's about, and more.

Starring scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis as the final girl Laurie Strode, the HBO Max series even pays homage to the 1978 film by titling its eighth episode “The Night He Came Home,” which Halloween used as its tagline on the movie's iconic poster. In the dark, coming-of-age, horror-tinged drama PRETTY LITTLE LIARS: ORIGINAL SIN, we find ourselves miles away from Rosewood, but within the existing Pretty Little Liars universe — in a brand-new town, with a new generation of Little Liars. Now, in present day, a disparate group of teen girls — a brand-new set of Little Liars — find themselves tormented by an unknown Assailant and made to pay for the secret sin committed by their parents two decades ago...as well as their own. In Original Sin, the new generation of high school girls features Bailee Madison (Just Go With It) as pregnant student Imogen Adams, Chandler Kinney as amateur filmmaker Tabby Haworthe, Maia Reficco as star athlete Noa Oliver, Zaria as aspiring ballerina Faran Bryant, and Malia Pyles as the introverted and tech-savvy Mouse Honrada. The series will also feature actors Alex Aiono, Mallory Bechtel, Eric Johnson, Lea Solanga, Sharon Leal, and Elena Goode. Set in the blue-collar town of Millwood, the girls find themselves answering for the misdeeds of their parents from decades earlier and come under attack by a masked assailant. The series ran for a total of seven seasons from 2012-2017 and launched the career of all four principal actresses while gaining a devout fan base thanks to the original book source material and its blend of the horror and coming-of-age drama genres. Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin has now premiered on HBO Max, and the reboot is re-introducing one of television’s most conniving and mysterious villains.
