Here are some of the sights of the Lollapalooza kickoff: Also returning this year is the hugely popular Kidzapalooza, the “interactive music playground” on the festival grounds, with its own daily lineup of family-friendly performances, music and dance workshops and a whole lot of kids’ activities. The four-day music extravaganza returned to a full-on festival last year, after COVID-19 shutdowns forced a pivot to an online incarnation in 2020.

After singing hits “Furniture,” “Walk Backwards” and “Superfruit,” Latour addressed the crowd. “I want to dedicate it to protecting your friends and protecting strangers that you don’t even know.” ”Being here, it’s like, you get to catch up to their new stuff, but also, like, little throwbacks,” she said. “So we went through and listened and learned.” Lollapalooza, which is put on by Austin, Texas-based C3 Presents, follows current standards for major music festivals and adheres to local COVID-19 guidelines for outdoor events, as set by the Chicago and Illinois departments of public health. “There is like 100,000 people here,” she said. She approved of her friend’s strategy to wear her bag across the front. She added that she’s most excited to see J-Hope on Sunday, especially since the South Korean rapper, who is part of the mega popular boy band BTS, just recently released an album. “We just wanted to get a chance to check it all out first day,” said Mdo, 19. She knows Lollapalooza has security on-site to react specifically to such incidents, but she said she felt “they’re not going to get there fast enough to do anything.” “In a crowd, people just grab you, sometimes it really does happen,” she said. The first day of Chicago’s biggest music festival is sometimes said to be less crowded and lower-key but you could be forgiven for thinking otherwise inside the fence.

Highlights in the Grant Park festival's opening day include Metallica, Tove Lo, Lil Baby, Lorna Shore, Still Woozy, Sam Fender.
The addition of live horns was a welcome component, giving off a War On Drugs vibe and offering a tempting taste of what Fender can bring live when all systems are go. Fender started off solo, with just his electric guitar and emotive voice, offering a memorable version of Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark,” somehow turning it into a haunting slow-dance ballad. If there is a good-sport trophy to be handed out this weekend it goes to Sam Fender. The buzzy British singer-songwriter (just recently nominated for the UK’s holy grail Mercury Prize and adored by Adele and Elton) was cheated out of nearly 30 minutes of his set due to massive technical difficulties that could have put “]Spinal Tap to shame. But Still Woozy rescued the vibe soon after by bringing out fellow California artist Remi Wolf to perform their chilled-out indie ballad from earlier this year, “Pool.” It was a special moment that they followed up with the set’s second bizarre moment: a rough cover of Drake’s “One Dance,” which Wolf stayed onstage to lead. It was a mess of a song — and Metallica fans in their black band T-shirts did not seem particularly excited. Crowds packed Grant Park early to get a taste of more amplified acts as Lolla taps into its rock roots with Inhaler and The Wombats and perhaps one of the heavier bands to ever grace the festival stages, metalcore act Lorna Shore.

As a performer, she was a little too prone to letting her punk attitude do most of the heavy lifting, scoring easy points with the broadly confrontational gender politics of songs like “Working Bitch” and “Tantrum.” With so much of her audience already on board with her rebellious act, though, she managed to get by on sheer energy alone. Flying out of the gate with “Whiplash,” the band eventually settled into a groove, focusing largely on its blockbuster Nineties material before shifting back to primal thrash mainstays like “Seek & Destroy,” “Battery,” and “One.” Ironically, thanks to Stranger Things, the band’s formative pre-breakthrough years are currently higher profile than ever. His relaxed entrance belied his commanding, yet laidback presence — whether he was onstage or dipped out for a break midset, the crowd clung and sung along to every word in a set that spanned his five-year rise from “All In” and “Southside” through new song “In a Minute.” For Sullivan, music is a space to vent and a way to rejoice, yes, but it’s also a way to remind listeners, especially Black women, of their worth. Displaying the kind of body positivity that demands a healthy application of sunblock, Tove Lo approached her set with a puckish sense of mischief, prancing across the stage with a huge grin as she offered up moody synth-pop that was equal amounts swagger and vulnerable confession. For a festival that celebrates musical diversity, Lollapalooza could use a few more unexpected choices like Billy Strings. A bluegrass ace in a — literal — field of electro-pop, hip-hop, and rock acts, Strings (born William Lee Apostol) showcased a virtuoso strain of traditional music heavy enough to catch the ear of any Metallica fans snagging an early spot by the main stage. It’s the kind of stuff that makes you root for his (and anyone anywhere in a similarly dead-end situation’s) escape. With the deafening volume of Metallica to her right and Lil Baby to her left, there was no way Caroline Polachek could overpower her fellow headliners. From the brassy anthem “Final Form” to the ominous woodwinds driving “OMG,” Sampa guided fans through highlights from The Return, her 2019 debut solo album, and new singles like “Never Forget,” which introduced radiant, propulsive music from her homeland. By leaning into the quiet, Polachek hooked listeners with her best asset: the flexibility and acrobatic tricks of her voice. And if there was an underlying theme beyond appealing to a wide swath of fans, a handful of artists with famous kinfolk are taking center stage throughout the four-day festival. That and other upbeat songs, including new single “These Are the Days,” landed stronger with the festival crowd than Inhaler’s more reflective material.

Gunna is awaiting trial in January for a gang-related indictment. Treating fans to his Grammy Award-winning hits, the rapper started out with “Pure Cocaine,” “On Me,” and “We Paid.” Metallica treated fans to some of their biggest hits, including “Whiplash,” “Creeping Death,” “Enter Sandman,” “The Memory Remains,” “Wherever I May Roam” and “Nothing Else Matters.”
Lollapalooza organizers and the Chicago Park District reached a stalemate Thursday night in crafting a new contract to keep Chicago's largest music festival ...
The deal was executed just months after the city Office of the Inspector General noted that Lollapalooza organizers were not paying the 5% amusement tax, even though other music festivals were required to pay. The contract includes a provision that festival organizers are on the hook for sales, liquor, leasehold and amusement taxes. When the Lollapalooza contract was announced in 2012, after months of private negotiations, it was heralded as a “big win” for Chicago’s taxpayers, hotels, restaurants, cultural community and parks.
Metallica wasted no time going old-school and establishing a tight bond with the faithful Thursday night at its headlining performance at Lollapalooza.
The conflict-themed “For Whom the Bell Tolls” thundered with booming percussion and screaming guitars that threatened to tear a hole in the sky. An impromptu jam preceded a rollicking cover of “Whiskey in the Jar,” a traditional Irish tune popularized by Thin Lizzy — a prominent influence. To its credit, Metallica didn’t sleepwalk through commonly known numbers like the tension-building “Enter Sandman” or stomping “Sad But True.” Faced with a less-than-desirable singalong response to “The Memory Remains,” the band worked to win over new converts and connect with loyal followers. Extending 20 minutes past the normal 10 p.m. curfew, Metallica closed its two hour-plus show with a rendition of the addiction-based tune that aimed to pulverize the senses and leave nothing in its wake. Its inclusion in the smash series has turned the 36-year-old song into a phenomenon and attracted yet another crop of listeners; it recently entered the Top 40 for the first time. Clustered in close formation, the quartet tore into “Whiplash,” one of its earliest tracks, with a manic ferocity that seemed hellbent on making the neck injury associated with song’s title a reality.

The last time anybody got a top 10 single for a guitar band was 2013 and that was Arctic Monkeys. So that’s to put it in perspective of how crazy it was. For an indie band - a guitar band - to get in the singles charts, even in the top 20, in the U.K. that’s pretty impossible. But then we got on stage and it ended up being a f–ing great show - for what we got to play,” he said. I need all the help I can get.” And it was great. For Metallica, Lollapalooza marked one of only three shows the band is playing in the States this summer. They’ll also rock headlining concerts in Buffalo, New York, on August 11th, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on August 13th. It’s been a mutual love affair between Metallica and Stranger Things ever since the show’s Season 4 finale premiered on Netflix on July 1st.

When cinematic indie rock act Flipturn played its hit song “Chicago,” the audience went predictably crazy. “It advertises the city so well, it’s a beautiful city. "Oh it was so busy, it was so busy, it was like a 30-minute walk in between hurdles of crowds and everything. The band closed their headlining set with "Master Of Puppets"—complete with footage of actor Joseph Quinn rocking out.
(We kid, we kid; we sort of kid.) Metallica, never ones to let a very metal marketing opportunity go astray, embraced the show’s use of their song right from the jump, issuing an Instagram post saying they were “totally blown away” by the song’s inclusion in the season, and by actor Joseph Quinn’s performance shredding it as Eddie. And so it’s not entirely surprising to learn that, when the band closed with “Master Of Puppets” last night in Chicago, they did so with footage of Quinn briefly playing on the screen above them, reminding the Metallica faithful present that that teevee show their grandkids are so into on The Netflix is totally into Metallica, too. This is per Billboard, which reports that Lars and the boys took some time during last night’s headlining set at the festival to toss in a shout-out to Stranger Things character Eddie Munson, who notably shreds a version of the band’s “Master Of Puppets” during the show’s fourth season finale, simultaneously distracting the ire of some extradimensional murder bats toward himself, and giving Metallica some of that sudden “Running Up That Hill” heat.

Oklahoma singer-songwriter Zach Bryan was one of many great country artists to perform at Summerfest this year, but if his Wisconsin fans were left wanting more, they had a chance for round two at Lolla this weekend. Still Woozy delivered an energetic performance at the Riverside Theater for his Milwaukee fans earlier this summer, and he brought that same energy – and then some – to Lollapalooza’s T-Mobile stage on Thursday afternoon. Although he was born and raised in Atlanta, Chicago always shows love for Lil Baby, who delivered a set at the festival's Bud Light Seltzer stage opposite of Metallica one mile north.
