Report: New York Yankees Acquire Benintendi, Put Gallo on Trade ... (Sports Illustrated)

Now that Andrew Benintendi is a New York Yankee, the likelihood Joey Gallo is traded rises even further. Could the Philadelphia Phillies be his destination?

The Philadelphia Phillies meanwhile, are most certainly not involved in Soto trade talks. Gallo is a free agent after 2022, the Yankees will lose him even if they don't trade him. That may be why the Yankees are asking for more than just salary relief. His defense was phenomenal and he was one of the league's most feared home run hitters with a tremendous walk rate. Gallo has been mired in a slump since joining New York at the trade deadline in 2021. After they acquired Andrew Benintendi via trade on Tuesday, five regular Yankee outfielders, including the injured Giancarlo Stanton, have a higher OPS than Joey Gallo.

Joey Gallo's days with the New York Yankees appear numbered after Wednesday night's trade for Kansas City Royals All-Star outfielder Andrew Benintendi.

Boone said he didn’t start Gallo on Wednesday because he didn’t think “it is fair to just roll him out there for the (Max) Scherzer start.” That was a nice way of Boone saying he wanted to go with players who had more confidence in. “It’s been a tough road for him since coming over here where he just hasn’t found that traction. The Yankees went with Aaron Hicks in left, Aaron Judge in center and Matt Carpenter in right for the second night in a row. The source added that Gallo was hoping to wind up with the San Diego Padres. San Diego GM A.J. Preller was a Texas Rangers executive when Gallo was a young player in the organization and tried to trade for the slugger last summer before the Yankees landed him for four prospects.

Yankees shopping Joey Gallo as Juan Soto alternative and that's ... (Yanks Go Yard)

The New York Yankees are struggling to sell Joey Gallo because every team that wants him is chasing Juan Soto. Seems dumb!

A full year of Gallo has resulted in remarkable consistency, even though most analysts attempted to write off his two-month stretch in 2021 as a fluke. Can the Yankees really afford to take this risk? Adding Benintendi gives the Yankees an additional All-Star in the outfield and, most importantly, a contact bat with plenty of AL East experience.

How Joey Gallo feels about Yankees' Andrew Benintendi trade as ... (New York Post)

Andrew Benintendi's arrival in The Bronx on Thursday further clouded Joey Gallo's status as a Yankee.

It’s always great to have good players and good guys come into the clubhouse. It’s part of the business and part of how things go when you’re trying to win a World Series. So I understand it and excited to have him aboard.” I’m just going to keep playing as hard as I can and help the team win any way I can in whatever role.”

The question is, what can the Yankees possibly get back in exchange for Gallo, who could perform better in a less aggressive environment? In fact, Joey is so demoralized he’s simply waiting for the Yankees to trade him within the next few days. The Yankees have ignored the strikeout metric for most players, but Gallo is simply incapable of making contact with the baseball. Boone is spot on, considering Gallo struggles against some of the worst pitchers in baseball. The New York Yankees have been trying to trade Joey Gallo for a few weeks, given his awful hitting metrics and inability to impact the team positively. Gallo is having the worst season of his career, hitting .161 with a 28.5% on-base rate.

New York Yankees: Joey Gallo needs to go at MLB trade deadline (Call to the Pen)

Those are numbers that scream the truth to the Yankees. Yet, he continues to be in the lineup because I bet Brian Cashman wants him there. Aaron Boone knows ...

What the heck, even Giancarlo Staton is a better candidate to take right field, even though he just hit the injured list (again). However, Cashman continues to make excuses for Gallo. The first one that comes to mind is Miguel Andujar, who earlier this season batted a respectable .268 in 12 games with the Yankees. Instead, they are forcing Andujar to request a trade. But, it is time to designate Joey for the assignment or find a trade for him. The team is doing great without him; let’s just move on. So it should be a pretty easy fix if Joey is gone —Benintendi in left, Hicks in center, and Judge in right. He’s really good in the corner outfield positions. In June, Gonzalez went 11-for-35 (.314), with two homers, four doubles, two walks, and a .951 OPS. And he’s really starting to swing the bat well for us.” – Aaron Boone on Marwin Gonzalez. There is no need to hold Gallo, not even on the bench. He is swinging at it .161 with 12 home runs, 24 RBI, 103 strikeouts in 230 at-bats, and 40 walks throughout 80 games. Those are numbers that scream the truth to the Yankees. Yet, he continues to be in the lineup because I bet Brian Cashman wants him there. Gallo has gone hitless in way too many games and struck out more than one can count.

Yankees LF Joey Gallo's true feelings after not being moved in ... (ClutchPoints)

After not being moved in the Yankees' trade for Andrew Benintendi, Joey Gallo is looking forward to being traded to a new team.

It’s clearly not been working for both the team and the player. Gallo this season has been a train wreck for the Yankees. His struggles on the team date back to when he was moved to New York last year. A source from NJ.com reported that the Yankees hitter is already “waiting for something to happen” before or during the deadline.
