Who's a good movie? Not "DC League of Super-Pets," a big colorful idea that proves promising in theory -- tailor-made for a two-minute trailer -- but a ...
The main problem, though, might be the way the movie oscillates between insider-ish humor and the broadest kind of dog-related gags, until you begin to wonder precisely for whom it's intended. At first blush, Krypto's exposure to a more grounded pet's-eye-view of the world seems filled with possibilities, and there's a long track record of major franchises built around anthropomorphic animals. Poor Krypto has grown up with an enviable canine existence, enjoying regular walks (OK, dazzling flights over Metropolis) with his master and even helping him fight crime.
The DC Comics Cinematic Universe has mostly taken a dark, gritty approach to blockbuster comic book movies. But perhaps there's another way to explore the ...
That quandary resolves itself when a hairless guinea pig named Lulu (McKinnon), rescued from an animal testing lab run by Lex Luthor (Maron), and obsessed with world domination, uses a shard of orange kryptonite to grant herself and the other rescue animals superpowers. That’s the thesis presented by the animated movie “DC League of Super-Pets,” which combines several elements that have already proven successful to create a family-friendly access point to the worlds of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and their gang of superheroes. But most importantly, it teams Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart in the lead roles of Krypto the Super-Dog and Ace, a rescue mutt.
Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart voice canine heroes in a family-friendly animated spinoff of the “Justice League” franchise.
What are kids supposed to make of the references to “The Great British Bake Off” in a running gag? The director, Jared Stern, was a writer of “The Lego Batman Movie” (2017). Like that film, this one spends a lot of time gently mocking its superhero source material. The animated family comedy “DC League of Super-Pets” proceeds from what can be described as a “sure, why not” premise: Superman now has a Labrador retriever named Krypto the Super-Dog, voiced by Dwayne Johnson, who fights crime and has special powers.
Also featuring the voices of Kevin Hart, Kate McKinnon, John Krasinski, Vanessa Bayer, Natasha Lyonne, Diego Luna, Thomas Middleditch, Ben Schwartz, and Keanu ...
This would follow the same release pattern as The Batman and Fantastic Beasts, which both came to HBO Max exactly 45 days after opening in theaters. Right now, the only place to watch DC League of Super-Pets is in a movie theater when it opens in the U.S. on Friday, July 29. This year, however, Warner Bros. theatrical movies will have a 45-day theaters-only run before moving to HBO Max.
"DC League of Super-Pets" director Jared Stern told Newsweek how his experience at an animal shelter inspired the new animated summer film.
Some of the voice cast, including Johnson, have been shooting promotional videos for the cause and posting them to their social media channels. "I thought, 'what if they got superpowers?' So that was sort of the emotional genesis." "It's a tricky thing, because we do these very choreographed animatics like storyboard reels of the movie before, before we even get to the real actors coming in," Stern said. "What you see is what you get with those guys. And then in the back, were some older animals, disabled animals, who kind of lived at the shelter," Stern told Newsweek. Set in the DC Comics universe, the new movie features the voice talents of Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Kate McKinnon and Vanessa Bayer as adorable and super-powered pets.
Dwayne Johnson is lovable as Superman's pet dog Krypto; the rest of this animated tale is stuck in routine mode.
At its base, "League of Super-Pets" plays with the notion that pets can be superheroes too, and it throws in a bunch of familiar faces that are necessary for world-building and franchising reasons. But in "DC League of Super-Pets," he's stuck in a routine adventure. It's nice to know that at the end of a long day of crimefighting, Superman has a pal at home waiting for him, and that pal is Krypto.
The Rock, Kevin Hart, Kate McKinnon and Natasha Lyonne shine in this endearing and amusing spoof from the writers of the Lego Batman Movie.
The cast’s vibrancy carries the film through the requisite action sequences and unremarkable animation that doubles down on the cute (the villain is, again, a squeaky guinea pig with a kitten sidekick who coughs up hairball grenades). Stern and Whittington’s vision of Metropolis isn’t quite as deliriously irreverent as in the Lego world, but the film has enough bite for older viewers. Wizened turtle Merton (Natasha Lyonne, perfectly dry) develops Flash-like superspeed but not the wherewithal to refrain from swearing in a kids movie (it’s never not funny, and all bleeped). DC League of Super-Pets, from Lego Batman writers Jared Stern and John Whittington, takes some similar lighthearted digs at Batman, but he’s a side character to the irresistible stars of the show: man’s best friend, plus some pals.
A ragtag group of shelter pets work through their insecurities and come into their superpowers.
Krypto conquers his feeling of being replaced as Superman’s best friend, and Ace’s backstory is sure to get some people a little emotional. PB (Vanessa Bayer), a potbellied pig who is also a diehard Wonder Woman stan, can grow and shrink at will (when she learns to control it). Chip the squirrel (Diego Luna) gets lightning paws. Despite his and Superman’s “ Bad Blood,” Krypto is determined to save him. When Superman misses the finale of “Bake Off” to go on a date, Krypto is heartbroken, and he’s too busy jamming out to Taylor Swift to notice when Lulu (Kate McKinnon), a diabolical hairless guinea pig, kidnaps Superman. They’re the perfect dynamic duo — that is, until Superman is ready to take the next step in his relationship with Lois Lane (Olivia Wilde). Suddenly, he’s flaking on their routines and looking for excuses to get Krypto out of the room. Dog is man’s best friend, and in “DC League of Super-Pets,” Krypto (Dwayne Johnson) is no exception.
Image via Warner Bros. For many years, DC has developed a series of theatrical releases that underlined their superhero universe's grim, dark, and mature tone.
But the most disappointing aspect of DC League of Super-Pets is its animation. Despite its flaws, DC League of Super-Pets is not a bad movie. DC League of Super-Pets also has its fair share of meta references that try to make fun of clichés, obviously directed to the people who consume a lot of superhero media. The idea of focusing on a team of super pets is exciting at first glance, as it allows the introduction of new characters to the familiar DC universe. So, the fact that DC League of Super-Pets got a theatrical release – instead of just being dumped in HBO Max – is a victory already. Even so, while all of that allows DC League of Super-Pets to become casual, family-friendly fun, the movie lacks originality and can not shake off the feeling we’ve seen this before somewhere else.

While we await those grim developments, the latest misadventure in corporate brand extension, “DC League of Super-Pets,” has arrived. Warner Bros. Discovery supposedly owns DC Entertainment, but these days you can be forgiven if you thought it was the other way around.
Collider exclusively presents 'DC League of Super-Pets' new track for Lulu, Lex Luthor's villainous guinea pig.
It was important to me that we tip our musical hat to some of the classic DC themes.” While the movie is aimed primarily at kids, producer Hiram Garcia previously told us that the feature will also hide tons of easter eggs and references to please even the biggest DC fan. Even without powers, Krypto decides to put together a team of super-pets of his own, so he can rescue his owner and the rest of the Justice League, saving the world in the process.
Dwayne Johnson wondered if it was too late to cut Kevin Hart out of DC League of Super-Pets. With the movie releasing in a couple of hours, The Rock took to ...
We found that the scenes became better as we became closer. In fact, he began with, "I think he wanted to kill me. The Rock wrote, "@KevinHart4Real has problems (being an as*hole). I don't think we can solve them… We were sitting and getting to know each other. They revealed that Taylor Swift has a few songs in the DC Comics animated movie. Specifically, "Bad Blood" and "Message in a Bottle." With the chorus of that Swift song firmly in everyone's minds, he joked that he had some unresolvable issues with the comedian and wondered if he could make the fateful swap.
Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart jam to two Taylor's Version tracks set to feature in DC League of Super-Pets in a funny new video.
This Dynamic Duo can make anything endlessly funny, and you can see them in all their animated glory in DC League of Super-Pets which is only in theaters starting this Friday. Super-Pets will be the first time fans will hear "Bad Blood (Taylor’s Version)." The hit song was originally featured on Swift’s album 1989. She has started releasing new editions of her first seven albums dubbed "Taylor’s Version" — last year she re-released both Fearless and Red. “Message in a Bottle” was featured on Red (Taylor’s Version) which came from the singer's vault of unreleased songs from that era.
Taylor Swift and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson have no bad blood -- especially after the actor's latest TikTok.
The singer has yet to reveal which of her re-recorded albums will be released next. Now she’s two-sixths of the way through the ambitious undertaking, having already released updated versions of Fearless and Red, with four albums left to go. Ur the man.”
What began as a shared fandom of Taylor Swift between The Rock and his DC League of Super-Pets director turned into an interesting, but secretive, ...
However, there was a process that Jared Stern and others had to undergo in order to consider this song for DC League of Super-Pets. For our last piece of the puzzle, we’re about to dive into something Taylor Swift fans are going to absolutely be interested in. Thus the decision was made to offer Jared Stern and Dwayne Johnson the usage of “Message in a Bottle (Taylor’s Version) (From the Vault).” Needless to say, Stern was over the moon, as any self-proclaimed Swiftie would be. So far, the story’s a pretty simple one: Jared Stern and Dwayne Johnson really dug “Bad Blood (Taylor’s Version)” being included in DC League of Super-Pets, and in turn, Taylor Swift dug their movie. While Red (Taylor’s Version) has indeed been released to the world, there was a time when it was once as secretive as whatever Taylor Swift is currently plotting. One seemed more important than the other on the outset, as I had learned that “Bad Blood (Taylor’s Version)” hasn’t even been released to the public yet, and neither has the re-recorded version of the album it was pulled from, 1989. The upcoming movie DC League of Super-Pets is no exception, as two of the creative forces that drove the movie are huge Taylor Swift fans, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson being one of them.
'DC League of Super-Pets' has two end credits scenes. What happens at the end of DC's animated comedy?
Besides that, Dwayne Johnson, who voiced Krypto in DC League of Super-Pets, will be playing the live-action version of Black Adam in theaters. Krypto wants to know the difference between a hero and an antihero, and the new dog says that an antihero is someone who makes their own rules only to break them, and who can ignore any moral constraints because no one could stop them even if they tried. At the end of DC League of Super-Pets, Krypto’s (voiced by Dwayne Johnson) new superpowered pet friends all find new owners in the members of the Justice League. Even a few of the villain Lulu’s (voiced by Kate McKinnon) hench-guinea pigs find redemption and loving homes. If DC League of Super-Pets gets a sequel, the duo could become villains working together against Krypto. Or maybe we can let them have a happy ending and retire from villainy. In DC League of Super-Pets' first post-credit scenes, Lex’s assistant Mercy Graves (voiced by Maya Erskine) retrieves the villain’s super-suit and rescues Lulu from the hot dog cart. That means the villains are defeated at the end of DC League of Super-Pets, the pet heroes form a new super team, and everything is well in Metropolis. Time for the credits to roll!
The usual cast of DC heroes shows up: Superman, Batman, Flash, Cyborg, Wonder Woman. They're initially reluctant to work together, but eventually they learn the ...
The smaller humans who saw the preview were delighted, and their parents didn’t seem to be suffering. Dwayne Johnson as Krypto and Kevin Hart as Ace the Bat-Hound hold their own, and the 3D animation is sufficiently adorable—I especially liked the homicidal kitten who coughs up grenade hairballs. If you’re going to tell a tale of rudimentary morality, straightforward sentiment, and gratuitous empowerment, it’s best to keep the tone light.

There’s also violence: Characters are frequently in peril, a teen wields a gun and shoots another character, someone uses a hockey stick to kill an enemy and there’s lots of futuristic sci-fi weapon use. It has lots of strong language, including “f---,” “s---,” “a--hole,” and “b-----s,” as well as racist slurs. Amber Brown” is a coming-of-age series produced by Bonnie Hunt (“ Cheaper by the Dozen”). Inspired by Paula Danziger’s popular same-named book series, the show follows 11-year-old Amber (Carsyn Rose) as she navigates some of life’s most difficult challenges.

DC League of Super Pets is out, and it looks like the viewers are unhappy with the movie. Reviewers have called the movie a series of corny and outdated ...
Most of the reviews say, it hits a series of bad jokes. Then there's also a murderous super cat who could fire laser bullets from her whiskers and say things like, "what's up dog?" League of Super Petsis finally here, and it wouldn't be much wrong to say that viewers are not happy. It was supposed to be heavy action packed with meaningful scenes. The final verdict of many is that the DC League of Super Pet is a huge mess that could have been done better. The league of Super Pet saw some of the best actors voicing the characters.
Warner Bros' DC League Of Super-Pets receives the widest release ever in the UK and Ireland for a fully-animated title this weekend, opening in 725 ...
Vertigo is opening Emer Reynolds’ UK-Irish drama Joyride in 255 sites. Picturehouse Entertainment is debuting comedy-drama Hit The Road in 37 locations. However, a wide opening does not guarantee a large total in the eight-figure region. It is slightly behind the 743 opening sites of Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns from 2018 – a predominantly live-action film featuring animated sequences. Fellow animated feature, Universal’s Minions: The Rise Of Gru, started top with £10.4m in early July; it retook the number one spot last weekend, rising to £28.2m. DC League Of Super-Pets does not have the same franchise support as that film, although will hope to benefit from the DC name, the school holidays and the voice pairing of regular live-action collaborators Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Kevin Hart to draw in audiences. Schwartz has also had a prominent TV career besides Parks and Recreation, having roles in TV shows like Netflix’s Space Force, the comedy series The Afterparty on Apple TV+, House of Lies, Ducktales, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and many more. I don’t think I could have pictured a better casting for the role of Batman in DC’s League of Super Pets than Keanu Reeves himself, and it’s so cool to see him voicing this awesome role. Reeves’ biggest roles have definitely been the Bill & Ted film series, his starring part in The Matrix Series, as well as his titular role in the John Wick movie saga, which is getting a fourth movie in 2023. Next up on this list we have John Krasinski, who voiced Superman in DC’s League of Super Pets. As someone who has followed Krasinski for a long time, I can’t think of anyone better to voice the superhero in this film. He even had a voice role in Pixar’s Toy Story 4 as Duke Caboom. He also had a co-starring role in the cancelled-too-soon Netflix series, GLOW. Marc Maron voices the legendary villain, Lex Luthor, in DC’s League of Super Pets, and he has done plenty in the movie and TV business. Some of her biggest roles this far was being a part of the Bombshell cast, starring in 2016’s Ghostbusters, and the films The Spy Who Dumped Me and Yesteryear, among others. He hosted his own talk show, The Marc Maron Show, and co-hosted both Morning Sedition and Breakroom Live. Some of her biggest movies have been Trainwreck, Office Christmas Party, Ibiza, Barb and Star Go To Vista del Mar, and more. Some of his biggest roles thus far have included Night School, Think Like A Man, Ride Along, The Man From Toronto, About Last Night, and the drama, Fatherhood, alongside many others. She also had a starring role in the Peacock original series, Joe vs.
DC League of Super-Pets' post-credits gag features Dwayne Johnson in his starring role as Superman's dog, Krypto — and also as DC antihero Black Adam.
“We thought it would be so funny, but we were also a little bit nervous — we were like, Are you gonna be able to tell the voices apart? Most of the animal heroes in DC League of Super-Pets have at least minimal canon histories — PB, aka Wonder-Pig (Vanessa Bayer), is a reference to a Justice League Unlimited episode and an early appearance of a flying pig in Wonder Woman’s comics. Stern says his higher-ups at DC never batted an eye at League’s irreverence toward Black Adam, though, and he says he’s fairly sure the sequence came from Dwayne Johnson himself. In the post-credits sequence, set after the film’s resolution, Superman (voiced by John Krasinski) and Krypto are enjoying a Metropolis park by night when DC antihero Black Adam flies in with his pet dog. “The fact that Dwayne was playing roles in both these DC properties, it just seemed like a fun opportunity.” The animated family movie DC League of Super-Pets — an origin story for Superman’s best friend, Kryptonian super-dog Krypto — is built for adult viewers as much as for kids.

Industry estimates earlier have been optimistic for the film, seeing $25M-$30M at 4,300 sites, which easily would send DC League of Super-Pets to top of the weekend box office. The comp here for DC League of Super-Pets is Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s spring pic The Bad Guys, which opened to an $8M Friday and a 3-day of $23.95M after $1.15M in Thursday night previews, which Super-Pets easily beats. Last weekend’s No. 1 movie, Jordan Peele’s R-rated genre pic Nope, looks to ease 60% with a $17M-$18M take in Weekend 2. Fourth belongs to Sony/TriStar’s Where the Crawdads Sing, which grossed $1.7M at 3,650 theaters, -5% from Wednesday for a second week of $18M and a running cume of $46M. In third was Illumination Entertainment/Universal’s Minions: The Rise of Gru, which did $2.3M on Thursday at 3,816 theaters, -9%, for a fourth week of $29.3M and running total of $309.5M. That’s the average drop for a horror movie in its second session.

I laughed out loud several times and got a kick from hearing Reeves riff on “sad Keanu” as the Dark Knight. It is essentially “The Secret Life of Pets but co-starring the Justice League.” It also has a family-friendly cast (Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart for the kids, Kate McKinnon, John Krasinski and Keanu Reeves for the adults) and is damn enjoyable. It’s an ideal “air-conditioned babysitter” and a painless sit for adults. Minions: The Rise of Gru earned $125 million over its Fri-Mon launch from a $10.75 million Thursday. Lightyear grossed $51 million from a $5.2 million Thursday. However, it’s not usually the case for “just a new animated film” entries. Since I’m not necessarily expecting a $50-$60 million launch, I’ll note that The LEGO Movie 2 earned $34 million in early 2019 from a $1.5 million Thursday. Just this year, Universal and Dreamworks’ The Bad Guys earned $1.15 million on Thursday and went on to open with $24 million. However, this is an animated film, a non-sequel no less, so we can expect far less frontloading for the family-friendly “cats and dogs of the DC Universe” action comedy.

The Catholic News Service classification is A-II — adults and adolescents. While overcomplicated — no fewer than three different types of kryptonite are mentioned in the script and a host of Superman’s fellow characters from the DC stable put in brief appearances — their story is occasionally amusing and mostly unobjectionable. More ominously, their welfare is endangered by the machinations of Lulu (voice of Kate McKinnon), a villainous guinea pig who has managed to acquire superpowers. The Motion Picture Association rating is PG — parental guidance suggested. But their close relationship is complicated by Superman’s romance with Lois Lane (voice of Olivia Wilde).
A high-concept animated film about animals with superpowers is brought to vibrant, endearing life by the superpowers behind the scenes.
Kate McKinnon joins the Phantom Zone-worthy Hall of Fame of supervillains as the tiny guinea pig (do NOT call her a hamster). Her voice is a fabulously wicked weapon of its own, with the flair of a classic-era Hollywood diva. This is a challenge as Krypto does not really know how to talk to non-super animals (parents will appreciate the Steve Buscemi “fellow kids” joke). So, when an orange kryptonite pebble hits the floor of the shelter, all the animals get super-ized. Superman is worried about neglecting Krypto as he prepares to propose to Lois, so he takes him to an animal shelter to see if he can find a friend. In present day they work as a team to keep everyone safe from bad guys, both those from Earth and those from other planets. Be sure to stay all the way to the very end of the credits for one more DC Comics in-joke featuring the man behind the voice of Krypto, Dwayne Johnson.
In a new video, star Kate McKinnon got her first look at some of the toys based on the recently released film DC League of Super-Pets.
The toys range from a variety of standalone figures for the pets themselves to combo packs that feature the pets and their respective, superpowered owners. “In the film, Krypto the Super-Dog and Superman are inseparable best friends, sharing the same superpowers and fighting crime in Metropolis side by side,” reads the synopsis. Joining them are Marc Maron as Lex Luthor, Kate McKinnon as Lulu, Olivia Wilde as Lois Lane, John Early as Flash, Daveed Diggs as Cyborg, and Dascha Polanco as Green Lantern.
