“The politicized media wants NewsNation to fail,” Abrams claimed. Nexstar rebranded WGN America last year as NewsNation with the goal of launching a “fact-based, unbiased” network that delivers news 24 hours a day by next year. “If Cuomo doubles the ratings to 100,000,” the hire will “be worth it,” the source concluded. The name of Cuomo’s show has yet to be revealed. Cuomo’s will be replacing Marni Hughes, who held the primetime slot. Cuomo revealed his comeback bid on Dan Abrams’ NewsNation show Tuesday night.

The ex-CNN star will host a primetime show on NewsNation, a nascent channel where an assortment of TV news veterans have also landed.

In May, it hired ex-Fox News political editor (and recent Jan. 6 committee witness) Chris Stirewalt, who in January 2021 was let go in what the network called a restructuring; Stirewalt later said he was fired by Fox News for defending the Arizona call for Joe Biden during the 2020 election. NewsNation is a 24/7 network owned by Nexstar Media Group, the largest owner of local TV stations in the country (and, as of last year, owner of The Hill). The channel, which bills itself as nonpartisan, launched in 2020 and has “seen on average around 50,000 viewers during its prime-time hours this year,” Axios reports. “I think we need an insurgent media,” Cuomo told NewsNation’s Dan Abrams on Tuesday night, during his first major TV interview since getting fired by CNN last year over his efforts to help his brother, Andrew Cuomo, navigate a cascade of sexual harassment allegations.
