Three consecutive days with an elevated threat of flash flooding in central and southern Appalachia as a plume of deep moisture parks over the region. The Post is tracking a variety of climate solutions, as well as the Biden administration’s actions on environmental issues. St. Louis received the equivalent of two months’ worth of rain in six hours. Some areas on the northwest side of St. Louis received more than 10 inches of rain in six hours overnight — an event with a 0.1 percent chance of happening in a given year. The National Weather Service warned of “life threatening flash flooding” just after 2 a.m. and later declared a flash flood emergency, its most serious flood alert. By then, 3 to 6 inches of rain had fallen and high water was “threatening houses” while vehicles were submerged in high water, according to the Weather Service. Understanding our climate: Global warming is a real phenomenon, and weather disasters are undeniably linked to it. Have a question about climate change or climate solutions? Extreme precipitation events have increased substantially over the past century and are tied to warming from human-caused climate change. St. Louis County emergency officials urged residents not to travel and said they had set up a shelter for displaced people. He said the incident was under investigation and did not provide additional details. About 15 people chose to shelter in place.

St. Louis, Missouri, experienced historic rainfall Tuesday when a storm dumped more than eight inches of rain in the city.

"Many roadways in our area are flooded and closed. "Some of the vacant buildings are also suffering from the stress of this water." At least six people and six dogs were rescued by boat from flooded homes, the fire department said. Firefighters responded to about 18 homes because of substantial flooding. "We urge Missourians to follow the direction of local authorities and emergency managers, never drive in floodwaters, and always use common sense to prevent injury." We’re having some partial roof collapse," he said.

Record rainfall St. Louis on Tuesday morning caused severe flash flooding that quickly turned dangerous for residents in low-lying areas.

Do you have pictures of the record-breaking rainfall? Local residents shared pictures of the flooding in their neighborhoods. "I just heard a big 'whoosh,' and waves — and next thing you know I’m in 3-4 feet of water," he said. Some parts of the region saw close to 11 inches of rainfall, according to the weather service. A few hours later, cars and dumpsters were submerged in water as deep as a swimming pool. The last record, 6.85 inches, was set in 1915.

The remarkable rainfall followed a period of extended drought in the region. A bigger factor, he said, was that the storm hit a metro area with a lot of concrete and asphalt, rather than grassy areas that could absorb the moisture more readily. In the St. Louis County town of Brentwood, residents were forced to evacuate when Deer Creek overflowed. Most of the rain fell in a few hours shortly after midnight. Fire Chief Dennis Jenkerson said at a news conference that many homes suffered significant damage, and some roofs were collapsing under the weight of the water. One person died when a car in St. Louis was found covered in more than 8 feet (2.4 meters) of water.

Flash Flooding in St. Louis Turns Deadly (Gizmodo)

At least one person has died after the St. Louis metropolitan area experienced thunderstorms on Tuesday that dropped 2 inches of rain per hour.

The flooding caused widespread damage across the area, and broke several St. Louis precipitation records. St. Louis Fire Chief Dennis Jenkerson said in a briefing yesterday that city’s fire department conducted 70 civilian rescues related to the flooding. But research has shown that a warming atmosphere is more likely to produce heavier rains, as warmer air can hold more moisture. “Communities throughout our region were devastated by last night’s record rainfall and flooding,” said St. Louis Mayor Tishaura O. Jones in a statement yesterday. With the barrage of high heat across the globe, you might think that some rain would be a nice respite, but in St. Louis the aggressive downpour quickly turned into a flash flood. The National Weather Service says that several thunderstorms dropped upwards of 2 inches (5.1 centimeters) of rain per hour to the St. Louis metropolitan area beginning early on Tuesday morning, which caused major flooding.

Upping the Presence and Power of Women in STEAM (Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis)

A group of women is building a network and encouraging women in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) at the St. Louis Fed.

Many women leaders in STEAM hope for an environment where they are represented in the same way as their male counterparts, and yet, here we are today still hoping and wondering what it will take. Renea Daesch joined the St. Louis Fed in April 2021 as the assistant vice president of Treasury engineering. Views expressed are not necessarily those of the St. Louis Fed or Federal Reserve System. (See infographic.) However, by 2019, the STEM proportion had increased to 27% and women made up 48% of all workers, according to the Jan. 26, 2021, article. These women were unsung heroes until a 2016 book, “ Hidden Figures,” and a 2017 movie of the same name brought their stories to public attention. Members of the St. Louis Fed’s VIEW (Valuing, Inspiring, Empowering Women) employee resource group learned that the number of women in STEAM was decreasing, and a high percentage of women were leaving their chosen STEAM career after about five years. And people who later saw the coders in photographs published with articles about ENIAC thought the women were just models, according to a History.com article first published in 2017, “ When Computer Coding Was a ‘Woman’s’ Job.” For example, in 1946, women coders helped make the first computer work. Previously, she was the vice president of global information technology for BW Papersystems and is a retired U.S. Army senior civilian who supported the Department of Defense logistics and transportation mission. How can we have a bigger impact? What are we dealing with here at the St. Louis Fed? Some VIEW members, who are also executives in information technology and executive offices at the St. Louis Fed, went to work to impact the presence of women in STEAM at the Bank. What can we do?
