Who wanted this information out there? Kyler Murray's new contract with the Cardinals came with some notable strings attached. Arizona signed its franchise ...
I think that’s more than worthy of a spot in the Hall of Fame. The 1976 Olympics in Montreal were plagued by a variety of issues long before the opening ceremony. It was a sign of things to come. He was an undersized power pitcher (listed at 5' 10", 180 pounds) who learned to throw with his non-dominant arm after breaking his shoulder as a kid and went from rural Virginia to a 16-year career in the majors. Or maybe it’s indicative of a striking level of distrust that one of the league’s premier quarterbacks will work to take his game to the next level. In June the Astros drafted him in the first round. He was throwing in the mid-90s. He hasn’t been inducted into the Hall of Fame. He has seen growing support among Hall voters, though, earning 51% of the vote this year after only appearing on 31.7% of ballots in 2020. To me, the strangest thing about the clause isn’t that it was included in the contract but rather that it became public. Add to that there have been questions about leadership and even punctuality at points in his career, and it’s fair to connect these clauses to the team wanting more of Murray off the field. It makes the Cardinals look like overbearing micromanagers who at the same time are so careless with their money that they’ll give $160 million to a guy who they don’t trust to do his job. And because 2020’s offseason program was wiped out thanks to the pandemic, that means, through four years, Murray still hasn’t had a full offseason program.
The Cardinals are making sure Kyler Murray watches film for four hours a week with no distractions.
That led to Heyman mocking New Jersey and making a sly joke about Vince McMahon’s recent departure from the company. It seems Schefter, who famously referred to the subject of a story as “Mr. Editor,” may have been trying to clear the tweet with someone. Once the news broke on social media that Murray, a 25-year-old man making $230 million, will now have to do homework, the memes started rolling in and they did not disappoint. There’s also the issue of this clause getting leaked to the media Monday. Did Murray’s team want the information out there to make the Cardinals look bad for treating him like a child? Let’s get to the good stuff. The layers of absurdity in this story are deep.
Unlike millions of other Americans, Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray apparently is not a fan of working from home. At least during football season.
One interception, one bad game will prompt Murray’s detractors, and there are more than a few, to bring up the homework clause in his contract. The Cardinals did, but on their own schedule, not Burkhardt’s. In a news conference last Friday, Murray said he gives Burkhardt "a little crap" for that. The Cardinals were willing to settle for four hours a week of breaking down this team and that team. And, for the second time this year, it was inflicted by Murray and his agent. And how would the Cardinals ever prove that Murray spent the required time studying football on his tablet, phone or television and not watching television, playing video games or browsing the internet? The contract extension Murray and Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill officially signed Monday proves that.
Freshly re-signed Cardinals QB Kyler Murray must do four hours of weekly 'independent study,' per the terms of his new contract.
In games played before the annual Call of Duty release date over his career, Murray has averaged 22.5 fantasy points per game. The line in orange is when the annual Call of Duty game released. Alternately, the Cardinals simply might think — especially considering the hefty salary they’re paying him — that watching more film will make Murray a better quarterback, particularly later in the season. The Arizona Cardinals seemingly cut short any contract drama they might have had with quarterback Kyler Murray last week by signing the two-time Pro Bowler to a new deal, one in which he will become one of the NFL’s highest-paid players. It was important to the team making a commitment at that level, thus it was important to Murray. pic.twitter.com/VqrkvoBQLJ July 25, 2022 “I’m not one of those guys that’s going to sit there and kill myself watching film.
Kyler Murray's new contract extension contains a clause that requires the quarterback to study film for at least four hours a week during the season.
However, the Cardinals lost four of their final five regular season games in 2021, and it was reported that Arizona wanted Murray to work on his maturity and leadership. The clause is active from the start of this season through to 2028. According to ESPN, if he fails to study the required amount of film he will “be deemed to be in default” of his contract.

Former Oakland signal caller JaMarcus Russell, another first-overall pick, was believed by Raiders coaches to be neglecting his film-study duties. According to a 2011 piece on SFGate.com, those coaches responded by giving him a blank DVD for his film preparation and later asking him what he thought. In a move that ESPN calls "unusual, if not unprecedented," Kyler Murray's contract extension with the Arizona Cardinals includes a clause stipulating that ...
Murray may be extremely motivated in other aspects of the game, but he's not a film guy, and it's not at all clear that you can just "create" a film guy where none existed before. Studying film on your own is part of the gig for an NFL quarterback, and anyone interested in playing for a long time at an elite level shouldn't have to be told to do the bare minimum. And what looked like a perfect relationship between player and team seems to have soured considerably starting in December, and although things were ironed out with the contract extension, the club obviously needed some reassurances regarding Murray's commitment to fulfilling his potential. Looked at from a distance, this is a "good idea," the same way it's theoretically a good idea for a struggling husband and wife to write up a marriage deal where they have to go out to dinner once a week, or something. The contract extension, which was finalized on Thursday, keeps Murray in Arizona for five years for up to $230.5 million, and includes a club option. The details of the so-called "independent study addendum" are pretty funny, provided you're not a Cardinals fan.
Former Aggies quarterback had clear signs he wasn't studying when facing SEC teams, now facing 'divorce' clause in NFL contract if he doesn't break habit.
I don’t sit there for 24 hours and break down this team and that team and watch every game because, in my head, I see so much.” In actuality, it might have been Kevin Sumlin who found a way to hold down possibly the greatest high school quarterback ever during his freshman year. He had more interceptions than total touchdowns through the air and on the ground.
Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray's recently signed contract extension includes an addendum that requires him to study film for four hours per week ...
Murray will receive "credit" for completing his film study, according to the contract. According to the contract, Murray will need to study "material provided to him by the Club in order to prepare for the Club's next upcoming game." A source who has seen the contract confirmed to ESPN that the addendum first reported by NFL Network is in the contract.
The Heisman Trophy winner signed a new mega deal with the Arizona Cardinals, but will have to abide by their rules to reach his full guaranteed salary.
While it was certainly a long shot that Murray would ever play organized baseball again, he is on record as having stated a desire to try and return to the sport at some point. Murray, who was selected No. 9 overall in the 2018 MLB Draft and has previously said he would “love” to be able to play both sports at some point, cannot be involved in any organized baseball without heavily affecting his guaranteed money. But, while the Cardinals obviously made a substantial commitment to Murray with the amount of money involved and number of years attached to the deal, they did it on their terms with some highly interesting stipulations baked into the agreement.
Why are the Arizona Cardinals paying $230.5 million to a guy they think has to be forced to study film?
They’ve been exiled, like Colin Kaepernick, and race-normed, like the hundreds of other Black retired players who had their baseline intelligence assumed to be lower than white players so the NFL could give them less money in a concussion settlement. It’d make little sense to offer a wealthy, long-term extension to a player they could easily allow to walk in free agency after next season, or one they could have not drafted at all. It’s embarrassing and perplexing for a team to insist on such a clause in a contract for any starting quarterback, since independent film work is as essential to the position as playing catch. Worse than that, the homework clause infantilizes Murray and recalls an era—if it ever ended—when Black quarterbacks were always questioned about their intellectual capability to play what’s considered the most mentally challenging NFL position. And that calls into question their judgment in making Murray the second-highest paid player in the NFL, behind future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers, on an annual salary basis. The addendum kicks in this season and lasts through 2028, which is when the Cardinals can pick up a club option.
After news of contract language, Ertz notes 'he was on the same page'
"No matter what the contract says, (Kyler) is happy," Ertz said. Some guys like to stay at the facility and watch film, some guys like to watch film not on their team-issued iPads (but) in their big (meeting) rooms. "You can get so hyper-focused on film, it can be you're trying to see things that really aren't there during a game," Ertz added. There are a handful of quarterbacks that can win a Super Bowl in this league, and we feel he is one of them." With Murray, "his development in all areas, all he's done is get dramatically better each and every year. "Anytime I brought up questions about how their defense was playing certain techniques or whatever, he knew what I was talking about," Ertz said.
The contract for Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray including a study clause is a bad look for the organization and its leader.
He put Murray in the crosshairs with terms the quarterback willingly accepted, addressing the problem in a very transparent manner. But at least this sorry saga ends with Murray reporting on time to training camp. Of course, Bidwill didn’t have to insist on the Independent Study clause, the one that has brought much scrutiny and incredulity to the Cardinals at the commencement of training camp. In return, he forked over $230.5 million to Murray, in a deal where the other guy had all the leverage. He needs to better understand the implications and expectations attached to a franchise quarterback. Attempting to void a lucrative contract based on missing homework assignments would spark a firestorm from lawyers inside the NFLPA. But at the very least, Bidwill has guaranteed Murray will prepare better from this point forward.
No more video games for Arizona QB as new contract assigns study hall.
It feels a lot like a sixth grader being forced to do his homework, which explains the contentious offseason that Murray and the Cardinals went through (which included Murray scrubbing all mention of Arizona from his social media in February, prompting the rumor mill to fire up in full force). He turned down another first-round contract with the Oakland Athletics in the MLB despite concerns about his size affecting his NFL performance. Per NFL Network, the five-year extension has an addendum that requires the quarterback to spend four hours a week studying film and other materials given to him by the team to prepare for that week’s game — a homework clause, if you will.

There are a handful of quarterbacks that can win a Super Bowl in this league, and we feel he is one of them." "His development in all areas, all he's done is get dramatically better each and every year," Kingsbury said. For Kingsbury and Co. that means rebounding from a sour ending to the 2021 campaign and chasing a championship.
Kyler Murray made headlines last week not only for the massive five-year, $230.5 million contract extension he signed with the Arizona Cardinals but also ...
Ferguson would have to play 97 percent of the special teams snaps and block an absurd seven punts in each of those campaigns to get that cash. Mirer’s agents, Marvin Demoff and Don Yee, opted to insert one of the most unique clauses in NFL contract history to ensure their client got paid. His new two-year contract includes $750,000 weight bonuses for 2022 and 2023, with milestones for trimming down leading up to the season and maintaining an ideal weight each week. "If it's the kind of problem that needs to be addressed [in the deal], then maybe you should rethink whether you want to do [the deal] at all. Players who made critical remarks about the team could be forced to forfeit their signing bonus with this clause active. Eddie Lacy drew criticism during his playing days for his perceived lack of conditioning.
While Kyler Murray's contract extension with the Arizona Cardinals is buzz-worthy, new reports show something very concerning. As with most.
With the weapons he has on offense, this film study part of his contract could be what he needs in 2022. This is unprecedented and also a first in the NFL for a player of his status. However, it’s all in his ability to use this film knowledge and apply it on the football field. However, it seems like the Cardinals QB is game for this in his contract, and we aren’t talking video games. So why do they lack trust in him and what is in his contract that shows this lack of trust? However, a little something in Murray’s contract shows the Cardinals lack trust in their QB.
Now, game prep isn't just knowing the playbook. Murray obviously knows the offense, now entering his fourth NFL season in the same offensive system with head ...
“Anytime I brought up questions about how their defense was playing certain techniques or whatever, he knew what I was talking about,” Ertz said, again according to Urban for the official team site. Now, game prep isn’t just knowing the playbook. He has to do at least four hours of independent study of game-prep material each week in preparation for games or risk being in default of his guarantees.
Coded language from anonymous sources was dripping in racism to describe three of the league's best players.
The plight of the Black quarterback has a long history, and as this week proved, it’s still a steep uphill battle for melanated signal callers. Fast forward to now, and the market has increased the numbers for what a quarterback like Jackson can ask for, and then realized how much more he will make from his oncoming deal because he doesn’t have to give anyone a commission. And lastly, this is why Deshaun Watson has the largest guaranteed contract in NFL history. This week, we were quickly reminded that all the “progress” that’s been made on the field when it comes to the Black quarterbacks in the NFL is surface level at best. This is what coaches, general managers, talent evaluators, scouts, and executives will say when they get to speak freely under the security of anonymity. The Giants drafted Jones out of Duke — a school where football is fourth on the depth chart behind men’s and women’s basketball and lacrosse — with the sixth overall pick.
Murray's contract makes clear why Keim and owner Michael Bidwill had several 3:30 a.m. phone calls.
“I've played in front of many people, but as far as the coaches I've played for, they've always preached it. And similar to the team wanting him around for the offseason as the face of the franchise, AZ wanted a commitment in writing while going to a certain place money-wise. That fact made many believe prior to the signing that the owner would seek to keep that figure as low as possible. One other message to the quarterback is in Murray’s $29.035 million signing bonus. It's nothing new for me, so as far as the responsibilities I'm prepared for it. Everybody who plays quarterback understands the leadership aspect and the pressure aspect. Meanwhile, after Rapoport saw the reaction to the report, he tried to somewhat walk it back, adding, “Kyler Murray does 4 hours of game studying on his own, anyway. Whatever his role, by signing off on the contract, he sent a strong message for what is expected. Rapoport first tried to downplay the clause by writing, “Contracts are about give-and-take. It was important to the team making a commitment at that level, thus it was important to Murray.” When asked how he plans to deal with the added pressure of a new contract, Murray said, “It's the pressure I've always wanted. Those were bad enough, especially the combined $9.315 million in six offseason program attendance bonuses included in the deal.
Kyler Murray's contract extension has dominated Cardinals news for nearly a week. Did the quarterback deserve a new deal? How much has he progressed in ...
In signing both to extensions, Kingsbury through 2027 and Murray through 2028? “And then just to prove to Steve and Michael that we made the right decision. Like Murray’s contract, the incremental improvement includes notable addendums: The Cardinals haven’t won a playoff game in those three years. He was the new guy, the one who had never coached in the NFL, the one who had been fired by Texas Tech, his alma mater, the one with a spread offense that many doubted would work in the NFL. Those failures bind Kingsbury and Murray, too. Months later, Kingsbury was employed by the team with the No. 1 pick. He let down his guard a bit and revealed the wit and intelligence that others have told us he possesses. When Murray was 15, Kingsbury was raving about him. But Kingsbury appeared relaxed and comfortable, like a man in his fourth rodeo, not his first. Early in his tenure with the Cardinals, it was as if Kingsbury took extra care to remember his place. The ties have twisted tighter in the last three-plus years. Did the quarterback deserve a new deal?
