Jones joins a receiver group with the Bucs that includes holdovers Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Tyler Johnson, Scotty Miller and Breshad Perriman, and welcomed Russell Gage -- like Jones, another former Falcon -- this offseason.
Julio Jones had a disappointing lone season with the Tennessee Titans, posting career-low receiving numbers before his release in March.
The sixth pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, Jones was a seven-time Pro Bowler and two-time first-team All-Pro selection with the Falcons. Ben Arthur covers the Tennessee Titans for The USA TODAY Network. Tennessee had acquired Jones last year from Atlanta, where he spent the first decade of his career and established himself as one of the best receivers of his generation.
Although the Buccaneers have two Pro Bowl wide receivers and gave former Falcon Russell Gage a $10MM-per-year deal this offseason, they are not stopping ...
Jones’ 9,388 receiving yards from 2014-19 are the most in a six-season span ever, but in the 2020s, the former perennial Pro Bowler has missed 14 games. Jones has seen hamstring trouble sidetrack his career, leading to an absence-laden Titans season and a several-month free agency stay — after Tennessee made the 2021 trade acquisition a cap casualty in March. The Bucs will still take a flier on the player who ripped off the most prolific six-year stretch by a receiver in NFL history. The Bucs reached a one-year agreement with Julio Jones on Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets.

Jones will join a receiving corps that already features a pair of 1,000-yard wideouts from last year in Chris Godwin (98 catches for 1,103 yards) and (74 for 1,035). In his prime, Jones was among the most productive receivers in the league, averaging over 100 catches per season for 1,565 yards from 2014 to ’19. He earned first-team All-Pro selections in ’15 and ’16, and received second-team nods from ’17 to ’19. Jones, 33, spent last season with the Titans after a decade with the Falcons. The wideout played in 10 games, totaling 31 catches for 434 yards and one score—all career lows.

General manager Chris Ballard revealed that the Indianapolis Colts are still in the mix for a veteran wide receiver but are being selective.
Any veteran wideout that’s signed will actually see the field because the wide receiver room is light. If Indianapolis does bring in a veteran receiver, Hilton makes the most sense. The Indianapolis Colts are unable to escape the pressure to add a veteran wide receiver.
And as much as the Colts and Jones seem a natural fit now, Indianapolis general manager Chris Ballard said the NFL team had no plans to sign the former Alabama ...
Jones owns one of the NFL’s six 300-yard receiving games, and his career average of 91.9 receiving yards per game is the best in NFL history. But last season, the pair separated when the Falcons traded Jones to the Tennessee Titans after he had missed seven games in the 2020 season because of hamstring issues. Before the NFL, Jones broke the records at Alabama for single-season receptions and receiving yards and single-game receiving yards and helped the Crimson Tide win the 2009 BCS national championship in an undefeated season. The Colts have only one wide receiver who caught more than 13 passes in the NFL last season – Michael Pittman Jr. with 88 receptions for 1,082 yards and six touchdowns for Indianapolis. Five of the 13 wide receivers on the Colts’ roster are rookies, including second-round draft pick Alec Pierce from Cincinnati. As he piled up 13,330 yards and 61 touchdowns on 879 receptions, Jones led the NFL in receiving yards in 2015 and 2018 and led the NFC in receiving yards annually from 2014 through 2018. For the Titans in 2021, Jones missed seven games again with hamstring issues and posted career lows with 31 receptions for 434 yards and one touchdown.

Jones remains on the free agent market after having a career-low 31 catches for 434 yards and a touchdown (14.0 yards per catch) last season. The team's second leading wide receiver, Zach Pascal (38 catches for 384 yards and three touchdowns) signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in free agency. There's certainly a need for a veteran wideout if the Colts pursue one. Outside of Pittman (88 catches for 1,082 yards and six touchdowns), the Colts didn't have a single wide receiver that had 40 catches or over 400 yards last season. During that four-year span, Hilton averaged 75 receptions for 1,221 yards and six touchdowns. There isn't much depth in Indianapolis, as Mike Strachan, Dezmon Patmon, and Ashton Dulin are listed as second teamers on the depth chart.
He denied reports that Indianapolis was looking to sign the free agent and reunite him with his Matt Ryan.
He was released by Tennessee in March and has yet to sign with a team. He isn’t the first-team All-Pro he once was, but Jones could offer a lot of experience to a squad looking for a veteran presence. He was clear there have been no discussions about signing Jones and reuniting him with his former quarterback Matt Ryan, who was traded by the Falcons to the Colts in March. Ballard added that wide receiver TY Hilton is still “in the mix” to re-sign but said, “I just don’t see quite the desperation,” when referring to the team’s receiving corps, per the Indianapolis Star’s Nate Atkins.

The news about Jones arrived the same day that Godwin was reportedly cleared for training camp without needing to be placed on the physically unable to perform list.
Seven-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Julio Jones reportedly is signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Jones missed seven games for a second straight season as he continued to be hampered by hamstring issues in 2021. The 33-year-old will be teaming up with the quarterback who beat him out for a Super Bowl in heart-wrenching fashion. The Bucs will be Jones' third team in as many seasons.
As Julio Jones continues to search for a new team before the start of the season, the Indianapolis Colts don't appear.
If he looks green, perhaps Jones could pop up on the team's radar. Quinn was Atlanta's head coach from 2015 to 2020, leading the team to an appearance in Super Bowl LI after the 2016 season. He only played nine games with the Falcons in 2020, but he still managed to have 51 receptions and 771 yards. That game turned out to be the high point for Jones in 2021. The 33-year-old struggled to make an impact when he was able to play. Indianapolis could wait to see how rookie Alec Pierce looks during training camp to see if he is ready for a major role in the offense.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers actually pulled the trigger and brought Julio Jones to town. Here's what the Buccaneers can expect from the future Hall of Famer.
With the Bucs reportedly wanting to run the ball more, Jones is an improvement here as well due to his history as a strong blocker for a wide receiver. You can even say that Brady at 45 will be an upgrade to prime Matt Ryan. However, the quarterback change may improve the quality of the targets, but it doesn’t mean an improved quality of an ankle or any other potential ailments. The Jones signing is merely for depth due to the uncertainty in the depth chart after Gage. He will also serve as a mentor for whichever young receivers make the final roster whether it be Scotty Miller, Cyril Grayson, Tyler Johnson, and/or Jaelon Darden. Heck, maybe he can even help Ko Kieft improve as a pass-catcher. We also need to look at the makeup of the wide receiver room. Seven-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Julio Jones is signing a one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, per source. Now that Jones is getting closer to his mid-30s, it may be overly optimistic to expect him to be the Jones he was just a few years ago. The University of Alabama product also has two All-Pro First-team selections to his name, and he has led the league in receiving yards twice and receiving yards per game three times. He made the Pro Bowl in just his second season by putting up 1,198 yards and 10 touchdowns, and he would receive the same nod six years in a row starting in 2014. Jones was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons with the sixth pick in 2011, and he quickly made an impact on a team that was already solid. The 33-year-old has been one of the NFL’s most prolific wideouts over the past decade, and he is one of only a handful of active players who have tallied over 10,000 receiving yards.
When he wasn't battling injuries, the 33-year-old Jones had some solid flashes.
Brady loves to spread the ball around and if you think for a second that Jones won’t get looked at, I have a hard time believing it when even someone with a few skills as Scotty Miller had multiple games with over 80 receiving yards for the Bucs in 2020. Jones may not get the same separation or win as many jump balls as he used to, but he’s still, at the very very least, comparable to Russell Gage and Miller, each of whom has had big moments the last few years. In fact, of the 105 qualified receivers last season, Jones would’ve ranked 13th in PFF grade without those three games. If you take those three games away, Jones had just one game with a PFF passing grade below 65. Yes, Julio wasn’t the same Quintorris we saw dominate the 2010s, but when he was healthy last year he showed some flashes. Well, I’m not going to take the Julio slander sitting down.

... Just come out here and be who I am -- I don't need to be anybody else but that." We've got an extra weapon, especially in the red zone, out in the open field, we'll put him to use. But I did have some nicks and knacks here and there. "I control my emotions. His 434 receiving yards in the regular season were the lowest of his career, as was his lone touchdown catch, but he struggled with a hamstring injury nearly the entire season. So I always learn through everything I go through in life, because I control me," Jones said. "But I'm here now." He emphasized he doesn't have anything to prove to anyone and isn't here to step on any toes -- a nod to an already crowded receiver room that includes Evans and fellow Pro Bowler Chris Godwin, who is coming back from an ACL injury, and Gage. So we've just got to come out here and work each and every day. Jones saw action in 10 regular-season games and one postseason game with the Titans last year. "You can say, 'Oh yeah, Julio's with the Bucs, we got Mike [Evans], we got Tom,' but we've all got to put the work in. It wasn't really about coming to Tampa. We were just communicating, feeling each other out, I guess.
