Last November, Amazon struck a deal with the NFL for the exclusive rights to Thursday Night Football, beginning with the 2023 season. DirecTV currently has the rights to Sunday Ticket, but this will expire at the end of this year’s football season. The NFL has long partnered with Verizon to allow its customers to stream live games from their mobile devices and later extended those rights to any mobile carrier. This means that you’ll still need an NFL Sunday Ticket subscription if you want to get all of the out-of-market games on your TV or mobile device. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Goodell says the NFL doesn’t have any solid predictions as to how many subscribers the service will rake in during its first year. NFL Premium comes with a few extra perks, including ad-free full and condensed game replays, as well as access to Coaches Film.

By far the most popular style of alternate helmet has been an all-black design, which the Cardinals, Commanders, Eagles, Jets, Panthers and Saints will be wearing. Or, teams can unveil a unique look that is completely new for the team, which 10 teams have chosen to pursue. The NFL revised its previous one-shell policy on helmets last June, allowing teams to use one alternate helmet look starting with the 2022 season.

NFL Launches NFL+ Streaming Service (TV Technology)

Primetime, regular and postseason games to be available on mobile devices only.

We look forward to continuing to grow NFL+ and deepening our relationship with fans across all ages and demographics, providing them access to a tremendous amount of NFL content, including the most valuable content in the media industry: live NFL games.” “Today marks an important day in the history of the National Football League with the launch of NFL+,” Goodell said. And with tech companies such as Amazon, Apple and Hulu signing agreements to broadcast MLB and NFL games on their streaming platforms, the pressure is on both pro sports leagues and traditional broadcast and cable outlets to protect their live sports legacies, which are among the most attractive and lucrative programming options—while at the same time targeting video services that younger viewers are more likely to watch. The launch also means that “NFL Game Pass” will no longer be available in the United States, the NFL said. The new service, much like its “NFL Game Pass,” targets mobile devices with viewers only able to access out-of-market preseason games, live, local and primetime regular season and postseason games on phones and tablets. We have to adjust as a league to that.

NFL enters media streaming marketplace with 'NFL+' service (ESPN)

The NFL is making its move into offering its own media streaming platform, announcing that "NFL+" has launched on Monday.

The league began offering a package in which fans could watch replays of games online -- appropriately called "Game Rewind" -- in 2009. "NFL+" will allow fans to view out-of-market preseason games on all devices; local and national regular-season and postseason games on mobile devices; team and national radio feeds, NFL Network shows on-demand along with the NFL Films archive. The league regained the mobile rights after its contracts with mobile carriers expired at the end of last season. The work that we've done either with other offerings or research has helped us sort of frame this in a way that we think would be very attractive and engage our fans." Amazon, Apple and Google have emerged as the frontrunners to take over the rights that DirecTV has held since 1994. "We think this is a major step forward.

NFL launches tiered streaming service. Here's how much it costs (CBS News)

Football fans will be able to watch games on their mobile device, with NFL promising a bevy of content.

Steve Gera, a sports business professor at San Diego State University, noted that the NFL had a five-year streaming contract with Verizon-Yahoo that expired this year. Apple for example has a 10-year contract to stream Major League Soccer games, which begins next year. The rise of league-owned streaming services will not take eyeballs away from televised sports games, Rishe and other experts said. Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement that NFL+ is about deepening the league's relationship with fans of all ages by giving them "a tremendous amount of NFL content." The launch of NFL+ marks another instance of sports games migrating away from where fans traditionally have enjoyed the action — network television. With NFL+ launching, NFL Game Pass will no longer be offered in the U.S., the league said.

The NFL Relaunches Its Own Streaming Product, Plotting Its Media ... (Forbes)

NFL executive Gil Moran when he spoke to Forbes about the league's re-launched product streaming product NFL, the service formerly known as NFL Game Pass.

To get help, Lencheski says, NFL partners like Verizon would help the league establish a base through “activation inventory.” The NFL would likely issue NFL+ codes for corporate partners to use in promotions. Moran said the NFL is “exposing ourselves to just subscription revenue” and doesn’t have a sponsor at the moment. In the offseason, Moran said NFL+ can offer fans historical games and possibly add content during the summer. “I think they did a wonderful job coming out of the gate.” But plans to add the content are likely to emerge, especially should the NFL find an investment partner for its media business. While the league doesn’t want to move too quickly and disturb its revenue from linear TV networks, which renewed for more than $100 billion, this move means it can better prepare tech companies for the future of distribution via connected devices. What’s different is the league taking it over with a mission to fill a $400 million hole — the fee paid by Verizon to stream the NFL in the league’s latest contract — and to do it on smart TVs, phones and tablets. The company acquired the rights from Sprint for a reported $720 million, which lifted the league’s mobile rights fee to $250 million per year. That increased the NFL’s rights fee to a reported $400 million. Sprint was allowed to stream NFL video highlights and access the league’s cable channel, NFL Network. The agreement gave customers access to NFL mobile games outside of cable distribution. “There’s a way to do direct-to-consumer differently,” Moran said.

Ranking NFL alternate, throwback helmets for 2022, from Panthers ... (Sporting News)

A total of 14 NFL teams will have either an alternate or throwback helmet in 2022. The NFL is allowing teams to have a secondary helmet this season, ...

The helmet is cool, but the jerseys make the uniform. The Jets also jumped on the black alternate helmet look, this one matte with a green facemask. It's the look the Giants wore during victories in Super Bowl 21 and Super Bowl 25. Now, more than 30 years later, the red helmet returns and it's the fresher look. The three-dimensional look on the logo is hot, but this reminds us of something Louisville would wear for an ACC showdown with Clemson. The problem with it is any of New York's throwback helmets look better. It's the first of six black alternate helmets on this list, but it's the best one. It's a good alternate look, but it's simply not better than the original. This is going to be judged against the Eagles' Kelly-green standard, the throwback helmet that is coming back in 2023. Pro: The white tiger motif is going to look awesome on Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase. It's clean, and a white-on-white uniform in The Jungle is perfect. The black-and-gold combination works, and the stripe features a bunch of tiny fleurs-de-lis. It's still the best white alternate helmet on this list.

As it considers its options for Sunday Ticket, the NFL gets deeper into the direct-to-consumer streaming business.

“Now reach is more complicated, and you’ve seen the migration of some rights. Verizon used to pay for a package of in-market streaming rights similar to what NFL Plus will offer, but that deal was not renewed.

NFL Launches Subscription Service At $4.99 A Month (Forbes)

The service will allow users to stream live local and primetime regular season and playoff games on their phones and tablets.

Amazon, Apple and Google have all expressed interest in the package, with Apple considered the favorite to land a deal worth more than $2.5 billion annually, the New York Times reported Sunday. The NFL signed a 10-year deal worth about $10 billion annually with Amazon, CBS, ESPN, Fox and NBC last year. Crucially, NFL+ doesn’t threaten to challenge the league’s cozy relationship with its traditional broadcast partners considering the service only offers mobile streaming.

New NFL uniforms 2022: Ranking the best alternate helmets and ... (NBC Sports Bay Area)

Over a dozen NFL teams will debut new jerseys or helmets for the 2022 season. Here's a ranking of the best new uniform sets.

The Eagles’ primary green helmet worked fine with the alternate black jersey. There’s a reason that you rarely, if ever, see a team logo on the front of a helmet instead of the sides. Fans weren’t asking for an alternate black helmet – the only new uniform anyone in Philadelphia wants to see is the kelly green throwback, which is likely coming in 2023. The Bears’ orange alternate jerseys are always fun to see once or twice a year. Most teams with an alternate black helmet just replaced their primary color with black, so at least the Saints added the mini logos all over the top to give it some character. The Panthers, who have only worn silver helmets since the franchise debuted in 1995, unveiled a black alternate helmet. The jersey is simple – all blue with red and white trim – but simple is better in this case. That’s why these new black helmets stand out, because the logo finally sticks out when it’s placed on a black background. The jerseys still could use a refresh, but there’s no doubt that the new “battle red” helmets pop. The Falcons have worn this black throwback jersey since 2016 with a black helmet, mashing up two eras to create an inaccurate throwback. Houston hasn’t once updated the set since the franchise was founded in 2002, but it’s finally adding an alternate helmet in 2022. The white helmet with the navy star was Dallas’ original look before it switched to the now-customary silver lids.

Ranking all 13 of the NFL's new alternate or throwback helmets (The Washington Post)

The onset of a new NFL season comes with 13 teams set to debut new helmets. Here is the definitive ranking of them all.

Was told Tanya Snyder has significant input on the designs.— Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) https://t.co/pOfOyWbVGk February 2, 2022 With their classic green look, the Jets had a stellar throwback option waiting but instead opted for a less exciting look. The Jets announced they would be wearing alternate matte black helmets with a green font, which led to mixed fan reactions. They don’t live up to some of the storied throwback helmets higher on the list, but they have potential to be solid additions to Washington’s debut season as the Commanders. The Texans’ helmets are designed to pair with their Battle Red alternate uniforms. The Eagles have said they will eventually wear Kelly green alternate helmets but will opt for the shiny black ones, an effective alternative, this season. It belongs to the Giants, who will be reintroducing their look from the 1980s and ’90s, paying homage to teams headlined by franchise icons such as Lawrence Taylor, Phil Simms and Mark Bavaro. New York revealed its throwback plans with a video starring Taylor and running back Saquon Barkley. The matte black helmets are a bold statement and a sharp change from Carolina’s usual silver look. The Patriots’ beloved throwback helmets (and uniforms) will be making their long-awaited return this season. The Cowboys also appear on the list of teams with alternate helmets, which features a slightly different look than the throwback. The helmets also feature black, white and gold stripes — nods to in-state universities Georgia and Georgia Tech. The dawn of a new NFL season has brought with it several triumphant announcements from teams eager to show off their new looks.

And the New York Times reported on Sunday that Alphabet (fka Google) is also now in the running; it wants to offer the package on YouTube. The biggest NFL fans will continue to need a subscription to Sunday Ticket, which offers out-of-market games that don’t air nationally in primetime. The pricey sports-on-streaming invasion all comes down to the fact that the NFL is still the surest bet on linear TV and a big advertising moneymaker: Viewership last season was up about 10 percent. To watch them on a TV, you’ll need separate access to ABC, Amazon Prime Video, CBS, ESPN, Fox, NBC, and NFL Network, depending on the game. The package replaces features previously available on NFL Game Pass, which as of now is no longer offered in the U.S. The NFL launched its own subscription streaming service on Monday, offering live games, replays, and on-demand content.
