Celtics Emerge As Potential Landing Spot for Kevin Durant, per Report (Sports Illustrated)

There was potential for Irving to opt out of his $36 million player option this season to test free agency, but he instead opted into his contract with Brooklyn. The Nets rejected that trade, and asked that any Celtics proposal include Brown, point guard Marcus Smart, multiple picks and potentially one more rotation player. Boston now reportedly joins a handful of teams who can be considered serious suitors for Durant. The Heat, Suns and Raptors have also reportedly been in contract with the Nets on a potential deal for the future Hall of Fame forward.

Because Boston wants to win the championship, and upgrading from Brown to Durant gives them a better shot at a title. Can Brown return to Boston next season like nothing happened if the Celtics don’t land Durant? Probably. But it would also be hard to blame Brown if he’s feeling salty about this report. While all professional athletes inherently understand that getting traded is part of the business, it’s easy to wonder if there will be some hurt feelings for Brown after seeing that his team offered to trade him for Durant. If the Raptors offer Barnes, he’s likely considered more valuable than Brown because of his age for next season (21 for Barnes, 26 for Brown), contract status, and perceived upside. The Nets’ ability to keep both Brown and Simmons on the roster presents an easier pathway to do a deal than most competitors can find. Just when it seemed like Durant returning to Brooklyn might be the likely scenario, reports from ESPN and The Athletic showed a mystery team emerging with a serious bid.

It's far too early and speculative to say for certain, but if Boston is at all worried about Brown re-signing when his current deal expires, moving now for Durant could on the surface and in a vacuum make some sense. Brown is a big part of Boston's present and future. He has contract incentives based on games played, All-Star games, playoff performances and All-NBA honors that could be worth an additional three million dollars per season. He also averaged a career-best 6.4 assists to go along with 7.4 rebounds. Jaylen Brown, Derrick White and a draft pick. According to Charania, no trade between Boston and Brooklyn is imminent and there is still work to be done, but there "is a deal to be had that would suffice the Nets' overwhelming ask" for Durant. The Celtics are said to be "keen on ensuring the franchise can remain a championship contender for years to come," which keeping Brown would allow them to do, but they have "tremendous interest" in bringing Durant in and view him as "a piece that could take them over that final hurdle."

Kevin Durant trade rumors: Celtics emerge as threat after offering ... (CBSSports.com)

The Nets reportedly countered by asking for Marcus Smart plus draft equity in addition to Brown.

It's going to take a huge package to get him, and Boston has the parts to make it happen. Although there is work to be done, there is a deal to be had that would suffice the Nets' overwhelming ask. Again, the championship window for a Brown-Tatum will simply be open longer, and the defense would suffer greatly without Brown and Smart, let alone if Derrick White goes out, too. Acquiring Durant would put the Celtics on a title-or-bust clock. The proposal was rejected, and Brooklyn has asked Boston -- in any proposal -- to include Brown, Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart, draft picks and potentially one more rotation player, those sources added. When Kevin Durant requested a trade from the Brooklyn Nets and his list of preferred destinations surfaced, the Boston Celtics were not considered among likeliest landing spots.

Kevin Durant trade rumors explained: Where could he go and why is ... (The Athletic)

Were the Phoenix Suns going to make a run? Was an Eastern Conference powerhouse going to try to bring in the future Hall of Famer? We're contractually obligated ...

It can get a little complicated but essentially this is the target salary for the minimum of what needs to come to Brooklyn with Durant going out. Durant’s healthy, he’s still seven feet tall and he’s still one of the most impossible players in NBA history to guard night in and night out. He missed an entire season with the Achilles tendon rupture, and he missed a lot of games to help prevent serious injury in the past two seasons after he got healthy. If the Warriors want to get involved, the salary of Wiggins would be very necessary to get a deal done, but they can’t include him with Simmons on the Nets. They also have plenty of role players they can include to keep Brooklyn competitive, and the Pelicans have picks and pick swaps with the Lakers ( Anthony Davis deal) and Bucks ( Jrue Holiday deal) to include in the trade, along with their own picks (2024 pick owed to Portland). Considering the Pelicans are very excited about their young core and the return of a healthy Zion Williamson, this feels less likely. First, they have to get the salaries to match (more on that in a bit), and the Nets are not looking to tank without Durant in the mix anymore. He doesn’t have a ton of leverage in dictating where he might want to go, other than the Nets trying to keep good relationships and appearances around the NBA with agents and players. Just remember the Nets are relinquishing Durant in this scenario, so it’ll take a lot more than that to make them feel like it’s acceptable, especially with a division foe as the trade partner. With the Nets not coming to terms on a deal with Irving, that’s when Durant told Brooklyn he would like a trade. Once Harden bailed on the trio, the Nets were going to have to bring it with a deep playoff run. In a little less than a season and a half, that Nets trio played 14 games (11-3) in 2020-21 (including playoffs) and two games (2-0) in the 2021-22 season. Well, this little thing called the COVID-19 pandemic threw a wrench into everything when Irving decided he wasn’t going to get vaccinated, and that resulted in a lot of missed home games.

As we inch closer to August, a major dead period in the NBA calendar year, trade talks surrounding Durant are expected to remain dormant. Whether or not this happens though remains a massive “if” around the NBA. Jaylen Brown is an All-Star-level player that the Nets do have interest in, multiple sources told SI Fastbreak, and Boston has several other key talents they could offer up. Not only could the Wizards look to flip former All-Star big man Kristaps Porzingis for Kevin Durant, but they also have Kyle Kuzma, Rui Hachimura, Deni Avdija and Corey Kispert as trade assets. Both Devin Booker and Deandre Ayton cannot be dealt for a while due to the Phoenix Suns agreeing to extensions with both of them in the offseason, basically eliminating the Suns from pursuing Kevin Durant and the Toronto Raptors are still not willing to give up Rookie of the Year Scottie Barnes, basically taking them out of the running for now as well. The Washington Wizards could be a possible landing spot in a trade for Durant given that the Nets All-Star is from Washington D.C. and lately, the Boston Celtics have suddenly emerged as a real frontrunner in these trade rumors.

How Kevin Durant could help Jayson Tatum thrive (CelticsBlog)

If you're a Boston Celtics fan, your world is probably in a tailspin right now. That's what happens when credible rumors surface about potentially trading ...

But there is a world where the benefits stretch beyond the parquet, and that’s something that could be extremely exciting as we wait for Tatum to finish his metamorphosis into an unquestionable superstar. Sure, any trade for Durant will be judged on championship rings, and whether the superstar actually honors the remaining four years of his contract. But I remember coming down on the wing, somebody kicked me the ball, and on the Celtics, I would have shot it. There’s less pressure to ‘go get a bucket’ or ‘force the defense into a mistake’ — that would be Durant’s job, something which he thrives on. On the flip side, Durant’s scoring gravity will ensure Tatum always has room to operate off-ball, be it as a cutter, screener, popper, or even roll-man. Beyond simply reducing the amount of defensive pressure on Tatum, Durant’s arrival would also benefit the young star from a developmental standpoint, too. As such, it’s safe to assume that Tatum will be seeing far more daylight in this scenario, especially on the perimeter, before his drive has forced a defensive collapse. And I remember we played the Select Team. Kicked our a** the first day. Less, defensive pressure means more time to make the right read, or find the right spot. But, as we know, teams will do anything to get the ball out of the star player's hands. So, opposing defenses are going to find themselves in a tough spot because you don’t help off a future first-ballot Hall of Famer, regardless of who has the rock. We’ve also seen the St. Louis native embrace a more physical brand of basketball, and finally, begin to utilize his ever-growing frame to dislodge defenders.

So, there's no question they want Marcus Smart to be the starting point guard on a team that potentially has Kevin Durant. You want to have Marcus Smart, Kevin Durant, Jayson Tatum, Robert Williams, Al Horford, the guys that they have, the depth that they have. There very well might not be a deal, but there is a framework of something here. I think over the last couple of weeks, I've heard the Celtics have emerged as a real threat, and they have the pieces to potentially put together a deal. But throughout those conversations, there really hasn't been a deal that makes sense for the Nets. They've set a very high price threshold for a Kevin Durant trade," Charania said. These are all questions that Brad Stevens and that front office will have to analyze." "For Boston, it's been pretty slow developing when it comes to the Kevin Durant sweepstakes.

Kevin Durant trade rumors: Where Celtics' Jaylen Brown package ... (Sporting News)

With the trade market changing over the past few weeks, does Boston have the strongest trade package to acquire Kevin Durant?

Adding Smart, a star in his own right, ensures the Nets can continue to compete as a playoff contender, while the draft compensation should be enough of a sweetener for the distant future. The proposal was rejected, and Brooklyn has asked Boston — in any proposal — to include Brown, Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart, draft picks and potentially one more rotation player, those sources added. As it stands, it appears that Boston would package Brown, White, and a role player plus significant draft capital or Brown and Smart plus limited draft capital. Brown will be 26 next season and, thanks to a breakout campaign in 2020-21, already has one All-Star selection to his name. With several suitors reportedly already making offers for Durant, the Celtics now give the Nets more to mull over in negotiations. Now that the landscape has changed over the past few weeks, could Boston assemble a stronger package than any other team?

The core of those two, Tatum, Horford and Williams has been through a lot in Boston to get to this point. But it's not worth breaking up Tatum and Brown and sacrificing the near future to make it happen. While Durant is still a solid defender at this point in his career, he's no Smart or Brown on that end of the floor, and the Celtics would be forced to play guys like Pritchard and Gallinari – who are both limited on defense – more minutes because of lack of depth. For that reason, it's hard to argue with the fans who want them to see it through with this group. Playing alongside Durant, it's inevitable that Tatum would have to take a back seat to one of the greatest scorers in league history, and it would be ill-advised for Boston to stunt his growth like that. That would no longer be the case if it made a trade for Durant.

Sam Hauser is expected to play a more significant rotation role as a reserve marksman. And when Boston inquired about Ben Simmons last fall, the Sixers held firm in their own demand for an All-Star-caliber centerpiece and additional assets, and their talks never grew substantive. The Nets have sought at least one bona fide All-Star-caliber player, other contributing players and significant draft capital to consider any Durant package, sources said. Several opposing executives contacted by B/R have suggested the Nets' terms are so significant because Brooklyn has no intention to truly move Durant. After over a month since Kevin Durant expressed his desire for a Brooklyn Nets exit, the trade rumors and reports continue to come out in a steady stream. There’s still a serious possibility that Kevin Durant reneges on his desire to leave, which reportedly hinges on how he feels about the roster once training camp begins.

Miami can offer Tyler Herro and a bunch of picks/swaps. Phoenix can offer Mikal Bridges and a bunch of picks/swaps. The Raptors could offer OG Anunoby and a bunch of picks/swaps. Are the Knicks that desperate to get Mitchell? Is Miami? Is Phoenix? Could another team come out of the woodwork? Talking to people in and around the Rockets organization at Summer League, Porter is a well-liked guy amongst teammates and support staff. There is no urgency in Utah to trade Mitchell before the start of the season. If they are, the Celtics may have to beef up their offer if they want to pry Durant loose. He’s got a young star on a long-term contract and the potential for a bidding war to break out. If the Nets and Celtics have exchanged offers, as The Athletic reported, both are likely to sit on them for a while. If the Nets are not—and it may be late August or early September before we know the answer to that—their asking price may drop. It should come as no surprise the Celtics have emerged as a landing spot for Durant, as ESPN and The Athletic reported Monday. As Sports Illustrated wrote several weeks ago, Boston was always a natural landing spot for Durant. Not only are the Celtics, finalists for the first time in more than a decade last season, the kind of contending team that would make a run at Durant, they are also armed with the assets to get him. Miami can’t trade Bam Adebayo to Brooklyn, per NBA salary rules, as long as Ben Simmons is on the Nets’ roster—there are some in the NBA that don’t believe the Heat would trade Bam for Durant, anyway—and a Tyler Herro–headlined package isn’t enough. If it does, Boston suddenly has a four-year—the duration of Durant’s contract—title-winning window. And if Jimmy Butler had a little left in his legs, Miami would have won Game 7 of the conference finals against Boston. Meanwhile, Philadelphia has reloaded, and Atlanta and Cleveland will be better.

All the buzz between the Nets and Lakers has been centered around Kyrie Irving if Durant gets moved elsewhere. The Pelicans can put together an extremely competitive offer for Durant. Ingram would fit what Brooklyn is looking for as a young All-Star, and the team is also loaded with future draft capital. Atlanta’s future draft compensation is limited after pulling off a huge deal for Dejounte Murray, but they do have some appealing young players on the roster to potentially get at the table. A deal built around Bane and a ton of picks is still a pretty good offer. We think the Suns should absolutely pull the trigger on this — and that they will regret it if they don’t. The question is if this offer is even good enough to beat out everyone else. Here are some weirder and less likely KD deals. The Heat will have to get creative to land Durant, but Pat Riley usually finds a way. This trade would give the Nets’ two potential starters, but unless Anunoby has another big leap coming, it probably won’t satisfy Brooklyn’s desire to land a young All-Star in any KD trade. It’s a tough call to part with Brown, but it’s worth risking it all for the Celtics. It’s possible Brown is the best young veteran available to the Nets in any deal. The Celtics have to be careful because they’re already one of the championship favorites as presently constructed, and they don’t want to risk alienating Brown should he return to the team. Boston’s offer headlined by Jaylen Brown is one of the juiciest rumors of the Durant sweepstakes yet, but the Nets are still holding out for more. Durant has reportedly held firm on his desire to go to a new team even as Brooklyn has dragged out the process.

In the short-term, Boston becomes the favorite in 2023, and given how proudly New Englanders still celebrate that 2008 NBA title, just one will be worth it. He’s coming off a season in which he would have been runner-up for the scoring title if he’d played enough games to be eligible. Will Boston regret it in the long term? He had the fifth-highest points per possession of any player to score at least 100 points out of iso sets and the fifth highest effective field goal percentage. What happens when Ime Udoka tries to lay some of that tough coaching on a 34-year-old Olympian, who grew to dislike Steve Kerr’s player’s coach brand? Or stay the course and trust that their additions along the margins, including a healthy Malcolm Brogdon, and the continued development of Brown and Jayson Tatum vaults them over the top? Durant prefers to play in isolation and he’s pretty damn effective too. Should they go all in on a tectonic trade for an aging Kevin Garnett Durant that would shift the balance of power in the short term? So does a proposed trade between the Celtics and Nets. This time around, the roles are reversed. George and Leonard were on the verge of free agency. However, the Nets who are perpetually unsatisfied, reportedly countered with a demand to include Marcus Smart. The Boston Celtics have reached their offseason garden of forking paths.
