"Paul Ricard is quite a challenging circuit, with a variety of corners and some long, winding sections towards the end of the lap," Stroll said ahead of this weekend's race at Paul Ricard. "The ground-effect cars we have this year appear to be producing better racing, so I hope we can put on a good show for the fans here. Discussing the brand, she said: "It all started during the quarantine, looking for a way to express my creativity within the walls of the house. In the meantime, Mika Hakkinen had been in a hurry at the start of the race and had carved his way though the pack - getting through Frentzen and Alesi to climb up to second from 14th on the grid. Whether you believe EJ's parable of the man with the brolly, or whether the team had just taken a gamble and won big, it set Frentzen on course for an unlikely title bid. A safety car period followed the stops, as Alesi threw his Sauber into the gravel, with the race brought to a restart on lap 35. Per EJ, the team was informed that the rain wasn't about to stop, and thus the Jordan pit crew filled Frentzen's car up to the maximum and sent him on his way, intending not to stop again. Barrichello led again, passed by Hakkinen again as Frentzen looked good for third - but the top two had to stop again for a splash-and-dash to the finish. Without the presence of his arch rival at the front and Mansell mired in the pack, Prost eased to clear towards a fourth home race win. A more traditional front-running trio of David Coulthard, Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Michael Schumacher occupied the next three positions on the grid. Pressure applied by the British driver saw Patrese make a crucial mistake and spin off, opening the path for Mansell to take second place. In fact, due to the early chaos and an incredible first lap to go from 16th to ninth, F1 debutant Jean Alesi became the surprise closest contender to Prost, rising to second in his Tyrrell before pitting. The race was immediately red flagged, as the 1985 British Formula 3 champion stepped out of his rolled March and remarkably was relatively unscathed. But wind the time back to Friday qualifying and something truly remarkable occurred - Minardi topped the times. But Maserati’s challenge had grown stronger and there were three A6GCMs in the top five.

Is the age of the drivers on the F1 grid getting younger these days?
Luigi Fagioli was aged 53 years and 22 days when he won the French Grand Prix in 1951. Alonso’s first season in the sport was in 2001, meaning his career now spans three separate decades. But what about the rest of the grid?
Carlos Sainz says criticism of Ferrari's F1 strategy calls has been unfair, after its tactics helped Charles Leclerc score French Grand Prix pole position.
"But I think this year the team has been very solid on the strategy side and I think today proves it. "It's nice to see. "And I think it's a bit unfair because [with] every team this season, there's going to be mistakes with tyres, choosing tyres and everything.
Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc crashed out of lead of the French Grand Prix, dealing a critical blow to his title chances.
It is a mistake and that is it. Leclerc suffered a problem with his throttle at the previous round in Austria when it stayed partly open in the final laps of the race. If we lose the championship by 32 points I will know where they are coming from but it is unacceptable," Leclerc told Sky Sports.

Max Verstappen led home Lewis Hamilton and George Russell to win Formula 1's 2022 French Grand Prix – a race that title rival Charles Leclerc had crashed of ...
Tsunoda stopped on the same lap as Leclerc’s crash as a result of the floor damage he had picked up in the lap one clash with Ocon that had dropped him to the rear of the pack. That was behind Perez, who lost out to Russell after the Mercedes driver jumped ahead of the Red Bull when the VSC ended as they approached the final corner and then soaked up pressure over the final three laps to seal third. On lap 42, Russell made a late move to the inside of the Turn 8 part of the Mistral chicane and when Perez turned in the pair came close to crashing before the Red Bull scampered across Turn 9 and stayed ahead – to Russell’s frustration but with the stewards’ quickly deciding the incident did not merit investigation. From there, Verstappen was untroubled to the finish and came home with a 10.5s margin of victory ahead of Hamilton, who was likewise unthreatened in second – this was despite a brief moment of worry for the leaders when Zhou Guanyu stopped in the Turn 6 runoff and triggered a brief virtual safety car. But just after it had warned Leclerc to look after his mediums, the race was turned on its head when Leclerc crashed out at Le Beausset – losing the rear of his F1-75 in a mistake while running close to the edge of the track deep into the high-speed hairpin on his stressed rubber. The Dutchman was now the one seemingly struggling for grip as at one stage he slipped off the road at Turn 6, so picking up his first track limits violation, and by lap 14 he had had fallen out of DRS range as Leclerc began to increase his pace back towards where he had been lapping in the early stages.
Max Verstappen won the F1 French Grand Prix in his Red Bull to extend his lead in the drivers' title race.
With the safety car called, Hamilton pitted for a free stop and emerged in second behind Verstappen when racing resumed on lap 21. Leclerc made a clean getaway from pole to hold the lead while Hamilton leapt out of his blocks and jumped Pérez to take third. He overcooked it, lost the rear and spun out into the wall at turn 11 and admitted it had been his fault. Verstappen looked to have slightly superior race pace in a straight line but did not have enough to make the pass. This is the 27th win of Verstappen’s career, his sixth in the last nine races and seventh this season. The victory has crucially further extended Verstappen’s lead over Leclerc who is second in the championship to 63 points, with ten races remaining.

Sergio Perez says blamed incorrect information about a Virtual Safety Car after George Russell passed him for third place.
“It said it was going to end out of turn nine and it only ended out of turn 13.” “It was totally wrong with the system, there was something going on,” said the Red Bull driver. But it didn’t end and I had the message saying that it’s going to end all the way through turn 12.

GEORGE RUSSELL and Sergio Perez got too close for comfort in their fierce battle for a podium spot in the French GP...
He argued: "Front wheel to rear wheel is the rule. I was definitely front wheel to rear wheel." He successfully held off the Mexican's late challenge to secure his fourth podium finish of the season and wrap up an excellent weekend for Mercedes at the Circuit Paul Ricard in Le Castellet. As the pair jostled for position in the French GP's most exciting battle, Russell attempted an overtake on lap 42 by diving down the inside of Perez at the entry to the chicane. The pace was strong, but we really struggled with the warm-up on that restart and Checo [Perez] was all over me. "I saw him [Perez] struggling when Sainz got past, and we had that one opportunity.

"On the podium, the Leclerc fans engaged in a light bit of booing with Verstappen when he was on the podium. The remainder of the 2022 F1 season still has ten Grand Prix weekends remaining, so the task for Leclerc is becoming increasingly difficult. Charles Leclerc cut a demoralised figure after his French Grand Prix spin, which saw him crash out of the lead at Circuit Paul Ricard on Sunday.
“I was thinking too much and I lost the rear. And it’s unacceptable, I just need to get on top of those things.” Leclerc had taken pole position and led until his Lap 18 crash at Turn 11, a snap of oversteer sending him hurtling into the barriers.

The bid for a third consecutive double points finish for the Kannapolis-based Haas F1 Team ended in frustration at the French Grand Prix on Sunday.
Magnussen boxed at the end of the lap to retire the car. Magnussen returned to track in the lower segment of the midfield but was unfortunately involved in a collision with Nicholas Latifi at Turn 2 on lap 38. Magnussen pitted on lap 9 for hard tires and came in once more for another set of the hard compound during the safety car period. “We had a difficult start on the medium tire, it didn’t really work as well as we imagined,” Schumacher said. “It was all going to plan until the safety car came out and it all went downhill from there,” said team Principal Guenther Steiner. “The strategy team did a fantastic job to predict what the tires would do because they did exactly what was predicted. The safety car came out and we had to go and change the tire too early because we were on a two-stop and all the other cars on a one-stop got a free stop, so what can you do.

Title decided after Ferrari horror show; brutal truth in 'fantastic' Mercedes result: Talking Points.
“It‘s a shame the virtual safety car interfered with the result, to be honest. Perez was engaged in a tough defence of third place from the pursuing George Russell late in the race. But he had a little bit of assistance when the VSC system failed to fire on its first attempt. Sainz then crowbarred his way through Perez anyway — only for the team to tell him to pit, apparently in the middle of the overtake. Russell attempted to pre-empt the restart and nailed it, allowing him to breeze past Perez and into third place. On average it was around 0.3 seconds a lap, but there’s good reason to think it’d be larger in more ordinary race conditions. And it was an unusual smash, the car suddenly slipping from his control in the middle of turn 11. “We don’t know why we came into this weekend and had a bigger gap on a single lap. His clumsy crash dropped him from 38 points behind Verstappen on the championship table to a deeply dispiriting 63 points behind with 10 races to go. I need to get on top of those things.” “I got the message it was going to end out of turn 9, so I went for it, and then it didn‘t end,” he said, per Autosport. “Then I got the message saying it was going to end through turn 12, and I was just too close to it. “Honestly, we were probably the strongest car on track today.
Verstappen has opened up a 63-point lead at the top of the standings and was joined on the podium by Lewis Hamilton and George Russell.
George did an amazing job as well.” I did a mistake at the wrong moment.” It is unlucky for Charles and I hope he is OK.” From there onwards, you never know how it is going to go. “I put pressure on Charles but the tyres overheated and I couldn’t go for a move. Verstappen’s Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez finished fourth.

The FIA has explained that a hardware problem was behind the controversial delay in the virtual safety car restart late in the Formula 1 French Grand Prix.
"I think we just want to understand the facts," he said. After getting overtaken by George Russell as he got back up to speed, he later said: "I mean it's a shame the virtual safety car interfered with the result, to be honest. "The same information is supplied to all teams concurrently.
Across the opening two days in Paul Ricard, Ferrari and their two drivers – Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jnr – had executed their weekend's strategy to ...
“Not going to the end was tough, I know, but you did what you could.” Having got ahead of Perez at the start and kept ahead, Lewis Hamilton had enjoyed a strong, lonely and thirsty afternoon after the Safety Car restart, unable to compete with Verstappen’s pace ahead but free from any pressure behind. Sainz moving ahead of Perez – albeit briefly – had allowed Russell to close up behind the Red Bull. With a DRS-boosted slipstream along the Mistral Straight, Russell ate up the four tenths gap until he was almost a car length behind by the time he slammed on the brakes at the 100 metre marker board. “We think box now,” Adami replied. So at the end of lap 42 with just 11 laps remaining and having just passed the Red Bull, Sainz peeled off into the pit lane to serve his five- second penalty and switch to a second set of mediums. “I was fully inside, he just turned in and I had to take the kerb.” Suddenly, having started on the back row of the grid, Sainz was one position away from a potential podium finish with just over half the race gone.Chasing down Perez required Sainz to carefully balance how hard he would lean on his medium tyres and he reeled in the Red Bull at a rate of around four tenths a lap. Positioning his car to the outside of 14 gave him the superior position for the final corner and he dived down the inside and into third place, out-dragging the Red Bull. He then hit the throttle out of the corner in anticipation of the green flag. Half a minute back from the leader, Sainz had passed half of the field and was already up to tenth. With Leclerc out, the new leaders behind the Safety Car were Verstappen, Hamilton, Perez and Russell, with Sainz now in tenth place on fresh medium tyres while most of those ahead had just replaced theirs with hards. Heading down the first half of the Mistral on lap six, race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase told Verstappen that he was closer to Leclerc than he had ever been approaching the chicane. Sergio Perezalongside him, Leclerc knew just how vulnerable he was on the 500-metre run to the first corner.
An FIA hardware issue briefly delaying the restart of Formula 1's French Grand Prix cost Sergio Perez third place.
“The same information is supplied to all teams concurrently. And it was pretty sweet.” Then it ended after Turn 12 and I was just too close to it. This delay to the restart meant Perez initially pulled away from Russell out of the chicane, before realising the VSC was staying in place longer than anticipated. “It’s a shame that the virtual safety car interfered in the result. This meant that the restart was delayed by around one minute, with Russell overtaking Perez when that happened.

The team of Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon picked up 12 points in France against rival McLaren's eight points. In the battle for P4, 'best of the rest', Alpine is doing good business. George Russell explained, “I had to pre-empt [the green flag] and it can go both ways but I knew I had one opportunity when the VSC was ending. Team boss Christian Horner believes his driver was robed by the shoddy procedure claiming he believed Perez had the pace to hold off George Russell and was therefore denied a podium. “I got the message it was going to end out of Turn 9, so I went for it and then it didn’t end. “I mean it’s a shame the virtual safety car interfered with the result, to be honest. Then I got the message saying it was going to end through Turn 12. This means that from the instant that message is sent there will be a random time between 10 and 15 seconds when the green flag is shown.
An embarrassing mishap involving Paul di Resta was broadcast during an interview with race winner Max Verstappen following the French Grand Prix.

"For the second half of the season, I know I need to get on top of things if I want to be a world champion." "I feel like I'm performing at the highest level of my career since the beginning of the season, but there's no point in performing at a high level if I do those mistakes," said a dejected Leclerc who is now 63 points adrift of Red Bull rival Max Verstappen. "So at the end of the year we will count back and if there are 32 points missing then I know it's come from me and I know I did not deserve to win the championship.

• Alonso's teammate Esteban Ocon finished eighth in his home race as he was dinged a five-second penalty (served during his pit stop) for contact with AlphaTauri's Yuki Tsunoda on the opening lap. • Sunday was a day of milestones as Hamilton competed in his 300th grand prix and Fernando Alonso surpassed Kimi Raikkonen for the most laps completed with the Alpine driver now at 18,672. Alonso finished P6 to score points for the seventh consecutive grand prix. As Russell complained about the lack of penalty for Perez, believing he had his opponent beat into the corner, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff came on the radio to calm his driver down. Although a furious Perez complained on his radio about Russell exceeding track limits during the final laps, no penalty was issued here either and like their earlier incident it came down to the two drivers settling things on the track. The team supplies engines to Alfa Romeo and if it turns out to be another power unit problem, that's something else to be concerned about. Russell is now just one point behind Sainz for fourth place in the standings as the British driver picked up his 11th top-five finish through 12 events. While we've seen the Red Bulls outpace Ferrari on the track, you can't help but feel like Mercedes is overachieving at the moment. Sainz yelled back, "Not now," as he was kinda busy at the moment and didn't need them barking in his ear. Pole sitter Charles Leclerc took off from the start and was comfortably in P1 when he spun out and crashed into the tire barrier on Lap 18. Kudos to Carlos Sainz for turning his grid penalty (due to power unit changes) and having to start 19th into a P5 finish. As for what happened to pole-sitter Leclerc, and Ferrari in general, read on.
