"When I think about Boston, I also think about the last game I played standing on the field at Fenway Park, you feel like the whole city of New England, and each one and every one of you is surrounding you and was showing me all your love. "My teammates were always there for me and that's something I'm always going to appreciate it," he added. Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred read Ortiz's plaque at the induction ceremony Sunday. It reads: "Powerhouse left-handed slugger who was at his best in the clutch, with legendary postseason performances that took the Red Sox from championship drought to three World Series titles in 10-year stretch. And the manager pulled me to the side and told me, 'hey big boy, I don't want you to be here to move them over, I want you to be here to bring them in. "All I was trying to do was bring a team together." I love you guys, and I'm always going to have you guys in my heart. Ortiz went on to share a story about Pedroia, saying, "my smaller teammate, where he at? "And to all of my American friends, consider this an open invitation to visit my island, the Dominican Republic, a special place where we have a lot of good and happy people, beautiful beaches where you guys can go when you're freezing here," he added with a laugh of his native country. You guys were the engine that started this motor everyday for me to get it going and keep on going," he said. "I wanna thank this guy right here, who you also know, number 45, my compadre Pedro," he said. The legendary right-handed pitcher lobbied for the Red Sox to take a chance on the slugging first baseman, who was released after six years with the Twins. The last six months, I received a special phone call to be elected to the Hall of Fame. I've been thinking about how I got here to this stage, Cooperstown today.

He won his only World Series late in his career, getting a ring with the 1982 St. Louis Cardinals. Hodges died of a heart attack at age 47, late in spring training before the start of the 1972 season. Longtime MLB pitcher and broadcaster Jim Kaat focused on thanking those who helped along the way that in a career that extended from 1959 to 1983. The memorable moment was from the ceremony in 2006, two months before O'Neil's death, as he spoke on behalf of 17 inductees selected for their contributions to Negro Leagues baseball, a group that many at the time felt should have included O'Neil. During a long career that stretched into the 20th century, Fowler played for more than 50 teams despite being lauded as a top performer wherever he went. Also welcomed to the Hall was 19th-century pioneer Bud Fowler, considered to be the first Black player in professional baseball. Minoso was another of the inductees on Sunday. During his 20-season MLB career, Ortiz bashed 541 homers while finishing the top five of AL MVP balloting five straight seasons over a period ending in 2007. The Red Sox snapped that streak in Ortiz's second season with the club. When Ortiz joined Boston in 2003, the Red Sox were still laboring under the Curse of the Bambino, the label given to Boston's title drought that began after their 1918 World Series win. We have a lot of good and happy people, beautiful beaches where you guys can go when you guys are freezing here." The Dominican Republic has a special flavor.

David Ortiz enters the Hall of Fame with enthusiasm only he can bring (The Washington Post)

One of a kind among MLB stars, the Red Sox icon entered the Hall of Fame with Bud Fowler, Buck O'Neil, Minnie Miñoso, Tony Oliva, Gil Hodges and Jim Kaat.

As a dark-skinned Afro-Latino at the height of segregation, he knew of the racial challenges he would face in the United States,” she said. O’Neil was the first Black coach in MLB history, and he emerged as one of the sport’s most treasured historians before he died in 2006. As a manager, he led the Mets to their legendary 1969 title. The Cuba native was the first Black player for the Chicago White Sox and emerged as a treasured star who grabbed attention and attracted fans with his on-field energy. “We also applaud the committee for not subjectively limiting their interpretation of a successful career in baseball to a singular focus upon statistics,” she said. He never got the chance to play in the major leagues. Like O’Neil, Miñoso made a name for himself in the Negro Leagues. He was one of the first dark-skinned Latino players in the majors — a forerunner of Ortiz in that way and in the joy with which he played. Ortiz was the only player voted in by the writers last offseason. The Red Sox won three World Series titles in 10 seasons with him in the middle of their order. Neither did O’Neil, the longtime Negro Leagues star and manager who spent eight decades in baseball. Hall of Famer Dave Winfield spoke on behalf of Fowler, who died in 1913. Ortiz was one of the best designated hitters in history, slugging 541 home runs and racking up 2,472 hits over 20 seasons.

David Ortiz Hall of Fame speech: Red Sox legend thanks coaches ... (Sporting News)

After three World Series championships and one of the greatest careers as a designated hitter, David Ortiz was enshrined in Cooperstown.

Ortiz was traded from the Mariners to the Twins in 1996 before he made his MLB debut in 1997. Ortiz ended his speech by stressing the importance of believing in others. To everyone that believed in me, from my family to coaches to teammates to fans, know I could not have done this without you. "My teammates always were there for me, and that's something that I always want to appreciate. On the last day of the season, he told me, 'The reason why I was so hard on you is because of all the players here, I think you are the one that can have an amazing career in the big leagues. "It's been almost 20 years since my first day in Boston. We have some incredible memories," Ortiz said. Ortiz, speaking alternately in English and Spanish, said he has been thinking about his speech since he received the call in January that he would be enshrined in Cooperstown as the first designated hitter to enter the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year on the ballot. Upon reaching Minnesota, Ortiz spent parts of six seasons with the organization before he was released following the 2002 season. I've been thinking about my life, my career, and most of all, the people that believed in me," Ortiz said. "We have a lot of good and happy people, beautiful beaches where you can go when you guys are freezing here." And he invited Americans to visit his home country. When MLB fans think of Ortiz, they remember his impassioned speech to a city recoiling from a terrorist attack in 2013.

Oliva joked that he was going to speak for 45 minutes, taking one minute for every year it took him to get elected. “I was not surprised to see all of my people representing the Dominican Republic,’’ Ortiz said. “Those players,’’ he said, “they did their duty.

Why David Ortiz, Larry Bird just missed the cut on Sporting News ... (Sporting News)

After all, the Celtics were still able to win a title in 84.6 percent of his seasons thanks, in part, to his next-level consistency as a key force in the paint. Russell was threatened because he didn't want to sign autographs for children; his Reading, Mass., home was vandalized by burglars who paints racist slurs on the wall, destroyed a pool table and defecated in his bed. He was part of one of the most iconic player rivalries in the league's history, Magic vs. He was the first player in NBA history to record a 50-40-90 season, achieving it both during the 1986-87 season and 1987-88 season. He delivered three championships to Boston and became one of the first, true stretch forwards in NBA history. "I have personally made the case that David Ortiz could be the most important player to have ever played for the Red Sox," Red Sox historian Gordon Edes said in an interview with The Sporting News. "He broke the curse. Before Ortiz even stepped to bat, the whole stadium just knew he was going to hit it out. Ortiz followed up his words of comfort with a heroic season that helped the city heal. That day forever altered the landscape of Red Sox history." His .344 batting average is tied for the sixth-best in MLB history while his sterling .482 on-base percentage remains the greatest of all time. Boston has as rich a sports history as any city in the world. He was just a shrewd pickup by rookie general manager Theo Epstein after the Twins released Ortiz to save $1.5 million and move Matthew LeCroy to designated hitter.

“He would remind all of us that his playing careeer was in the Negro Leagues and today he was being inducted into the same class as a Black baseball pioneer, Bud Fowler, and a former Negro League All-Star, Minnie Miñoso,” Terry said. “I ask that you remember Bud Fowler in a broad context,” Winfield said. He was born in nearby Fort Plain but grew up in Cooperstown, where he learned to play the game. Miñoso grew up on a sugar plantation and played ball on weekends as a kid and became a star with the New York Cubans in the Negro Leagues before becoming the first Black Latino player in the major leagues in 1949, two years after Jackie Robinson broke in. A second baseman who batted just over .300 in 13 seasons, Fowler was signed at age 20 by a all-white professional team in Massachusetts in 1878. “Remember him as a skilled athlete who endured obstacles that are hard to imagine today. He thanked his dad for instilling the discipline needed to succeed, his wife for always being there, and his former minor league manager, 94-year-old Jack McKeon, who was in the audience. He would have been so very proud to be a Hall of Famer,” said his wife, Sharon. “I always tried to live my life in a way ... so I can make a positive influence in the world,” said the 46-year-old Ortiz, just the 58th player elected in his first year on the ballot. Ortiz was never penalized for performance-enhancing drugs, and MLB and the union never confirmed there was a positive test. To Cuban players, Miñoso was the Jackie Robinson of Latino America and starred for the White Sox in the 1950s. I appreciated it very much, very much.”
