No one but Lewis has been able to actually shut Blaydes' lights out so a clean knockout seems unlikely for Aspinall. But the more Blaydes is forced into looking to wrestling first, the more he may be able to tilt the fight in his direction. Blaydes understands how to go the distance, even in a five-round fight such as this. Blaydes has five decision wins in his career while Aspinall has never even seen the third round of a fight. Pimblett, the Liverpool native, has scored a pair of first-round finishes in his first two appearances in the UFC Octagon -- one by knockout and one by submission. While Aspinall has solid wrestling, Blaydes is a bit better than him in that department. "I definitely think people underestimate my athleticism, even to this day," Blaydes said in an interview with Yahoo Sports. "I don't think a lot of people appreciate how athletic you have to be to get takedowns.

A few more hits for good measure followed before Herb Dean waved it off. Leavitt took down Pimblett early and spent portions of the round in command up against the fencing, while the home favourite got the crowd going with two choke attempts. He didn't disappoint, though faced stern opposition in an opening round all about the ground game, other than one kick to the head with 30 seconds left on the clock.

UFC London takeaways -- Resetting the heavyweight title mix after ... (ESPN)

Our MMA experts break down the big fights in London, evaluate what's next at heavyweight and recognize rising stars Paddy Pimblett and Molly McCann.

But the UFC has something in "Meatball Molly." She has a ton of charisma and all of her fights are exciting. In March, she grabbed a replica UFC title from a fan and brought that back with her to the Octagon. He has a terrific résumé, and his only losses in the UFC going back to 2016 are to Lewis and Ngannou twice. Four months ago, the Liverpool-born fighter beat Luana Carolina with a spinning back fist in London. It's clear to everyone that the UFC can put McCann's name on a card in the United Kingdom, she'll sell tickets and, against the right opponent, she can create highlights and moments. But Ngannou has already beaten Gane and Blaydes. The fight Saturday was supposed to be a big test for the 29-year-old prospect Aspinall to see if he could make that move up to the elite tier of the division. Derrick Lewis and Alexander Volkov are in the mix, too, a step below. Jones makes sense for the interim belt, with Ngannou likely out until 2023 and still in a contract dispute with the UFC. Ngannou could very well leave the promotion next year and go box. That is a very marketable matchup with history on the line for both men. But he's also turning into a star because he's authentic, and that's something any brand can get behind. On Saturday, in the opening seconds, Aspinall suffered a knee injury during an exchange with Blaydes. He went down after throwing a leg kick, clutching the joint and clearly in a lot of pain. A fight at UFC Paris in September between Ciryl Gane and Tai Tuivasa is also crucial in the heavyweight hierarchy. But Blaydes was awarded the TKO win due to the injury.

Prelim card winners: The UFC tried to fit eight prelim fights into a three-hour broadcast window. He also had success in the first half of the second stanza, but once Dalby reversed position on the mat, it became clear that Silva was running on fumes. Silva found some fuel in his reserve tank in the third stanza, but it was not enough to earn him his first win since 2019. Alexander Gustafsson: Prior to UFC London, Alexander Gustafsson confidently proclaimed that the UFC light heavyweight weight class was his division. The bad thing was that Curtis had nothing in his tool box to put his opponent at risk. Paul Craig: Paul Craig smartly tried to avoid the striking game of Volkan Oezdemir for the first four plus minutes of the fight. The question with McCann now becomes does the UFC look to give her a tough fight up the rankings or does it look to capitalize on her popularity with the English fans? He used a low kick heavy attack to slow down and defeat a game Charles Rosa. Wood used a patient approach to earn the win. This was a huge win for the 30-year-old, who called out Volkan Oezdemir during his in-cage conversation with UFC commentator Michael Bisping. Hermansson fought a smart 15 minutes, took little damage and set himself up for a fight opposite a top-10 opponent in the next few months. This week saw the fight between Curtis Blaydes and Tom Aspinall come to a close 15 seconds into the heavyweight bout due to a knee injury suffered by Aspinall.

As mentioned, Browne was undefeated in 14 fights leading up to the “Bigfoot” fight. Though “Hapa” returned from injury with a win streak, it’s fair to stay that Browne was never the same. In 2012, Browne was 30 years of age, undefeated at 13-0-1, and had knocked out a majority of his opposition. Perhaps Aspinall struggles from his back or doesn’t yet have the cardio for a five-round fight. Aspinall’s athleticism is a huge part of why he was able to skyrocket up the ranks and become a contender so quickly. The fans lost out on a great main event, one which could perhaps have saved the fairly pedestrian live show.

Credit to Nathaniel Wood for kicking Charles Rosa’s ass in his own decision nod, but on the whole, there wasn’t a ton worth rewatching on last night’s “Prelims” card. Respectfully, “The Meatball” is a 32-year-old, 5’4” Flyweight who’s unlikely to contend. This is the 35 year old’s fourth straight loss, and it’s a doozy. Even if a title seems unlikely, Krylov is one of the most consistently entertaining men at 205 pounds, so it was nice to see him get back in the win column. It was lovely work, a genuine display of skill and creativity to take out a solid opponent. With high-action and high-profile local athletes on the card like Tom Aspinall and Paddy Pimblett, the English fans were especially ready to blow the roof off The O2 Arena.

Jones was a big favorite heading into this matchup but ultimately the experience and boxing ability of Klein came through. Klein had many beautiful combinations throughout the fight, one of which dropped Jones to the ground where he almost finished him. He also had a chance to put Wood away with a choke which was taken away from the round ending. Wood came in with a strategy specifically made for Rosa and it showed.

UFC London: Curtis Blaydes vs. Tom Aspinall - Fights to make (Bloody Elbow)

All the best, most interesting, and unquestionably coolest fights the UFC needs to book following their latest event in London, England.

With a bout between Thiago Santos and Jamahal Hill upcoming, the winner of that fight could be just the kind of matchup the Austrian is looking for. It’s a great way for the ‘Prospect’ to announce his presence in his new weight class and it should mean an immediate bump up toward the top 15 next time out. All of a sudden ‘Meatball’ is riding a three fight win streak, and it’s time to start pushing her back toward the edges of the top 15. A bout with Ryan Spann wouldn’t be the worst next step possible for Oezdemir, but he’s probably looking to fight his way back up the division. Instead, fights with Dustin Jacoby or Ryan Spann would also work great for Krylov. I really think that fight with Jacoby would especially be a ton of fun to watch. I still think a fight against Jim Miller is one of the best bookings the UFC can offer the ‘Baddy’ right now. With the division as it stands right now, the obvious bookings for Aspinall would be a bout against the loser of Lewis vs. A steady diet of low kicks, head kicks, and body kicks along with a willingness to circle out and change directions left Curtis chasing Hermansson all fight and meant the Norwegian-born Swede could more or less cruise to a decision win. After the bout, the ‘Joker’ noted that he wouldn’t be opposed to a re-booked bout with Darren Till. And frankly, if he wants it, he’ll probably get it, since there isn’t really an otherwise obvious fight for the ‘Gorilla’ in the middleweight top ten right now. Of course, the downside to that is that it’s going to heavily increase calls from fans to see Pimblett take a big step forward. Not much of a win for Curtis Blaydes, all things concerned, but when a fighter’s already in the top 5, any fight that doesn’t set them back has to be considered some kind of victory. To answer those questions—but not much else—I’ll be using the classic Silva/Shelby fight booking methodology from the UFC of years past.
