The feud helped WWE overtake WCW, the rival promotion that WWE later purchased. The newspaper reported that the board was investigating $12 million given to four former WWE employees or contractors to silence allegations about McMahon's sexual misconduct. "As the majority shareholder, I will continue to support WWE in any way I can. However, on June 17, McMahon stepped down from his role as chairman and CEO in the wake of a Wall Street Journal report that revealed a WWE board investigation into a secret $3 million settlement given by McMahon to a former WWE paralegal. It was also announced by WWE on Friday that McMahon's son-in-law and Stephanie's husband, Paul "Triple H" Levesque, was returning to the company as head of talent relations, though it was immediately unclear if that is related to McMahon retiring. "I would like to thank my family for mightily contributing to our success, and I would also like to thank all of our past and present Superstars and employees for their dedication and passion for our brand.

Vince McMahon, WWE's chairman and CEO, announced his retirement Friday, following a sexual misconduct probe the company began in April.

Based on his real life, the persona was known for villainous storylines, most famously opposite Austin. McMahon was at the helm of WWE for decades, leading it to millions of viewers and more than $1 billion in revenue last year, a first for the company. That same month, Laurinaitis, a former wrestler whose ring name was Johnny Ace, was placed on administrative leave as a result of the allegations.

WWE's Stephanie McMahon Relays Thanks From Father Vince ... (Deadline)

She spoke about her father, his retirement, and his thanks for the members of the WWE Universe. She was interrupted by fans chanting “Thank you, Vince!”.

The McMahon family and Stephanie herself have been a part of wrestling for decades, spawning such brands as Raw, NXT, and SmackDown. Although challenged by upstarts, the WWE’s pay-per-view events are still huge draws, and the television shows are consistent ratings winners. Stephanie McMahon’s Friday appearance again topped the ratings, bringing in an 0.6 rating in the adults 18-49 demo to easily top the field for Fox. Hours after Vince McMahon’s retirement as CEO from his WWE empire, his daughter, Stephanie McMahon, passed along her father’s thanks to fans in a live appearance on Fox’s WWE Friday Night SmackDown.

WWE's Vince McMahon announces full retirement amid misconduct ... (The A.V. Club)

McMahon has been accused of spending at least $12 million to cover up allegations of sexual misconduct.

None of which, of course, showed up in McMahon’s retirement statement, which put its full focus on his advancing age as the reason for his departure. These allegations appear to be separate from one levied against McMahon in 1996 by former WWE referee Rita Chatterton, who said that McMahon sexually assaulted her in 1986. After spending the last four decades as both the most consistent public face of WWE wrestling, and one of its primary behind-the-scenes architects, Vince McMahon has announced that he’s fully retiring from the company this week.
