Blue Jays center fielder Raimel Tapia hit MLB's first inside-the-park grand slam since 2017 on Friday night vs. the Red Sox.

Tapia owes credit to Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran, who lost his fly ball in the sky.

Originally acquired in March from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for fellow outfielder Randal Grichuk, Tapia has served in a platoon role, facing right-handers nearly 90 percent of the time. Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Raimel Tapia recorded Major League Baseball's first inside-the-park grand slam since 2017 against the Boston Red Sox on Friday night. Duran eventually turned around and spotted the ball bouncing off the wall, but he made little effort to retrieve it.

The relay home wasn't close to nabbing Tapia, who picked up speed when he realized Duran had lost the ball. Matt Chapman, Teoscar Hernandez and Danny Jansen also homered for the Blue Jays, who entered the day with a two-game lead over the Red Sox for the AL's final wild-card spot. Duran took a couple steps back, then a couple in, then put up his hands in confusion.

8 Starting Pitchers the Blue Jays Could Target at the Trade Deadline (Sports Illustrated)

From Luis Castillo to Frankie Montas to Drew Smyly, starting pitchers who could fill Toronto Blue Jays's starting pitching trade needs at the 2022 MLB trade ...

The 31-year-old has a 2.68 ERA and 3.14 FIP 18 starts into the season, but with the Rangers only seven games back of an expanded postseason spot, they may not be inclined to move their surprise ace. Miley, too, has injury question marks but comes with a decent track record of bottom-rotation reliability. But, the 29-year-old has still been effective, posting a 4.0 ERA and 4.28 xERA in 14 starts this season, allowing over three runs in just three of his outings. The righty has broken 160 IP just twice in his career and expecting late-season success coming off TJ could be asking a lot. And, though the Angels sit at 39-53 and 21.5 games back of the AL West lead, are they willing to toss the towel and sell on another season of Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani's prime? From 2019 through 2021, Quintana had a 5.13 ERA, pitched just 244 innings, and lost his hold on a regular rotation spot.

The Blue Jays sit at 50-43, holding on to a playoff spot in a season where the competition for those spots became increasingly ferocious in the lead up to ...

But all of that only serves to build the tension, raise the stakes, and make the push towards the post-season that much more impassioned and memorable. While they tend to be most aggressive in the off-season, there’s the potential for moves in the coming weeks that cleverly complement a roster that remains very talented. And they have had the tendency over the past couple of seasons to finish stronger than they started. Outside of Alek Manoah, Alejandro Kirk and Jordan Romano, there’s a good argument that there’s plenty of upside to be found from the players currently on the roster. This is a complaint that has drifted into my own social-media mentions almost annually, and whenever there is the slightest air of positivity around the team coming out of spring training. The Blue Jays have not lived up to expectations in 2022.

Slapping another single into right field in the final frame, Gurriel became just the second Blue Jay ever to record six hits in a game, tying Frank Catalanotto. He turned on the low pitch, driving it into the cavernous Fenway outfield and scoring two more runs for Toronto. The two tallies pushed Toronto's score to 25, breaking the Blue Jays franchise record for scores in a game. Two innings after setting the runs record, Gurriel slapped a single into right field for Toronto's 26th hit of the game.

Numbers behind the Toronto Blue Jays' domination of the Boston ... (ESPN)

The Blue Jays came out hot after the All-Star break with a convincing win over the Red Sox. Here are some numbers behind their outstanding night.

It eclipsed the previous mark of 24 on June 26, 1978, against the Baltimore Orioles. For the Red Sox, it set the mark for the most runs allowed in any game in franchise history. The Blue Jays have done that four other times, most recently in 2021 against the Orioles. 19: In two-out scenarios, the Blue Jays still found ways to put runs on the board -- 19 of the 28 Toronto runs came with two outs. 28: The 28 runs scored by Toronto on Friday were the most in franchise history. The fifth inning was where the Jays did most of their damage, scoring 11 runs in that frame. That homer was an inside-the-park job -- the second in Blue Jays franchise history.
