After the Cardinals selected Murray with the first overall pick in the 2019 draft, he was named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and then made the Pro Bowl in each of his next two seasons. Watson, of course, had the entirety of his $230M deal guaranteed, a precedent other teams had little interest in. Murray had not been eligible for an extension until the day after the regular season ended in 2021, and soon after Murray's agent made it public the QB needed to get a new deal.

After some acrimonious negotiating, Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals found common ground on a five-year contract extension.

The two-time Pro Bowler is the first player in NFL history with 70 passing touchdowns and 20 rushing touchdowns in his first three seasons. In the end, though, cooler heads prevailed, and Murray is now set to become the highest paid player in franchise history. The Cardinals and Murray agreed on a five-year extension, the team announced.

That's the target the NFL should expect Jackson to seek whenever he and the Ravens get around to negotiating a new deal. In 2020, health issues plagued him and limited his ability to lead the Cardinals down the stretch. He's not far off from this target, either: Last season, Murray led the Cardinals to a key win over the Cowboys in Week 16, completing 68.4 percent of his passes for 263 yards and two scores against a top contender within the conference. It was seen as a "show of good faith" from Murray's side, and it ultimately led to the new contract he desired. But the late-season production from both Murray and the rest of the Cardinals hasn't lived up to expectation. The gap between the two sides seemed impossible to clear for a while.

Kyler Murray Gets Paid (Football Outsiders)

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray has agreed to a new five-year extension that makes him one of the richest players in the NFL at $230.5 million.

"Win because of QB" and "Win with QB" tiers is quite subjective. Therefore it is functionally a 7-year contract with a total value of $271M (using Murray's cap number for this year). The difference in value between Mahomes and Murray is much larger than the difference is between their contracts. Which I kinda doubt - he makes a ton of money off of his image, and that's easily enough to make up for the salary differences. I very much doubt they'd take a job with the incumbent QB slated for years. The Chiefs would be 100% totally and completely happy to have Mahomes on that contract for every single year. Admittedly, he did that in six starts, but they won five of those games and the sixth was irrelevant. The eagles, in part behind great QB play(if only for that one year) and rookie wage; were enabled to climb to the 1 seed, which meant avoiding one round and getting homefield to survive the rest. Foles and Wentz were not great QBs, but the Eagles compensated because of an all-time great offensive line. In 2020, for example, Murray was just 15th in passing DYAR and 18th in passing DVOA. Our KUBIAK projections for 2022 have Murray declining, in part because of regression to past performance and in part because of the loss of DeAndre Hopkins for the first part of the season (and Christian Kirk for the entire season). And the Goff Rams also qualify in that rookie qb discount. The annual value of this deal is $46.1 million, which puts Murray behind only Aaron Rodgers ($50.3 million annually).

Arizona and their star QB resolve a tenuous offseason with a deal to make him one of the league's highest paid players.

Cardinals are giving Kyler Murray a five-year, $230.5 million deal that includes $160 million guaranteed, per source. However, the deal has been for 5 years, through 2028 adding onto his original deal, rather than 6 years. This lines up with many projections that had been made, primarily focused on that $46 million per year figure.

His threat to run is essential to much of what the Cardinals do schematically. While last year could be seen through rose-colored glasses as a breakthrough season, the Cardinals still collapsed down the stretch losing four of their last five games. The Cardinals are converting a lot of third and very longs while also stopping opponents on fourth downs at an unsustainable rate (10 of 14 so far, league average usually hovers around 50%). They’ve recovered 18 of 23 fumbles (expected fumble recovery rate for any team is 50%). Between fourth-down defense and fumble recoveries they’re stealing two possessions per game so far. His ability to throw is essential to all of it. Now they built an offense and a team completely around the skill set of Murray and, by some extension, Murray’s head coach Kliff Kingsbury. They extended Kingsbury and Steve Keim, the general manager who hired Kingsbury, through the 2027 season. They ended up getting less (Miami’s No. 62 pick, plus a 2020 fifth-round selection) for Rosen then the Jets got for Sam Darnold (three draft picks) after showing the entire world that Darnold was unlikely to make it as a long-term NFL starter.

The five-year deal means the 24-year-old quarterback is under contract with Arizona through the 2028 season.

Murray is a two-time Pro Bowl selection in three seasons since the Cardinals chose him with the top pick of the 2019 draft. Murray, 24, is now under contract with the Cardinals through the 2028 season. The $46.1 million per-season average ranks second in the league to the $50.3 million average annual value of the three-year, $150.8 million extension quarterback Aaron Rodgers signed with the Green Bay Packers in March. Deshaun Watson’s five-year contract with the Cleveland Browns is worth a guaranteed $230 million, an average of $46 million per season.

Kyler Murray signed a contract extension on Thursday, and his new deal reinforces the steal that the Patriots have with Mac Jones' rookie deal.

Two of the best players in the NFL were playing some of their best football on a rookie contract. Patrick Mahomes won a Super Bowl on his rookie deal. On Thursday, Kyler Murray signed a massive extension with the Arizona Cardinals, signing a five year deal worth $230.5 million, an average of $46.1 million per year. This is something that teams with franchise quarterbacks get to take advantage of.

How the Cardinals and Kyler Murray Formed a Trust to Get ... (Sports Illustrated)

For the foreseeable future, the quarterback's success will be tied to the team's ability to facilitate a championship roster.

5) The Patriots had kicked the tires on tight end Kyle Rudolph over the years in part because of his background in their offense (he played for Charlie Weis in college), and so it makes sense that he’d now land with Tom Brady in Tampa. What does it mean for Rob Gronkowski’s potential comeback? In the backdrop of all of it for the Cardinals was the reality that signing a franchise quarterback is really a yes-or-no proposition. And in that circumstance, they’d be looking for an extra hand for the duration of Watson’s suspension, one like Rosen to work alongside Josh Dobbs, and behind Brissett. But if the suspension is for the whole year? Contracts for Deshaun Watson and Aaron Rodgers were, without question, the groundbreakers of the offseason, and done in a far-less-conventional way. Then, Matt Ryan did a conventional quarterback deal, and Aaron Rodgers did a conventional quarterback deal, and that was that. • Murray will get $30 million, fronted by a $29.035 million signing bonus, in the first season of the deal. In the end, the money, and metrics, were what mattered. As the team and Murray got closer to that, the questions got more pointed—Will you trade him? For the foreseeable future, Murray’s success will be tied to the Cardinals’ ability to facilitate it for him, and vice versa. And after the dirty laundry of Arizona’s season was aired, there was more reason for insecurity. First, it was in part in response to reports following Arizona’s unsightly wild-card round loss to the rival Rams, one of which came from ESPN on Super Bowl Sunday, that the team had serious questions about Murray’s maturity and accountability. The all-caps missive from agent Erik Burkhardt, on behalf of Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray, made clear the 24-year-old wanted the franchise to more aggressively put together a championship roster, and that he wanted the franchise to commit to him personally long-term.

However, assuming Kyler Murray will play out his contract, the average annual value of his deal would make him the second-highest paid quarterback in NFL history. He was a phenom at quarterback who went 42-0 playing at the highest level of football in Texas, then won the Heisman Trophy in his first season as a starter. A slew of media members, baseball purists, and even college football analysts advised Murray to follow the baseball route. During the pre-draft process, Murray’s decision to leave baseball behind and risk his long-term health by pursuing a career in the NFL polarized the sports world. He was diminutive, and while sturdily built, he resembled a hobbit compared to some of the physical specimens under center. On Thursday, Murray and the Cardinals etched that commitment into stone by agreeing to a five-year, $230.5 million contract that guarantees him $160 million.

"He's a younger guy that's gonna continue to develop and be one of the greats in our league. "Is he a prototypical quarterback? For everybody to just put him down because he got hurt last year seems a little irrational." Murray and the Cardinals agreed to a five-year deal reportedly worth $230.5 million, including $160 million in guarantees. We'll see whether this prompts Jackson and the Ravens to work on a new contract, or ride it out through his fifth-year option."
