American Horror Stories Season 2 Episode 1 Review (Game Rant)

The second season of American Horror Stories is already off to a better start than its first and pays homage to American Horror Story Coven.

If "Dollhouse" is any indication of what the second season of American Horror Stories has in store, then the series has a far more promising outlook than season 1 provided. Rather than trying to continue the legacy of a character from a previous Murphy project, "Dollhouse" provides a glimpse into the backstory of one of the Coven's most memorable characters. His relationship with the academy and his relentlessness to serve the women in it also becomes more meaningful through his difficult relationship with his father and his surrogate maternal relationship with Coby. In Coven, Spalding was a servant to the academy of witches and after cutting out his own tongue, was an unwilling confidant to Fiona Goode's (Jessica Lange) horrid secrets. "Dollhouse" is set in 1961 Matchez, Mississippi where Coby (Froseth) attends a job interview to apply to be the secretary of dollmaker Van Wirt (O'Hare). The two engage in a back-and-forth conversation that strategically foreshadows events that transpire later in the episode. The dialogue reveals this quite early in "Dollhouse," eliminating the suspense for viewers to figure out what the ultimate goal is meant to be.

The puzzle-box approach to continuity really works in its favor, and in this golden age of interconnected multimedia storytelling, there’s no reason that American Horror Stories can’t excel in sneakily using its odd tales to flesh out the stories and characters that people actually do like. There’s a welcome sense that everyone involved, including Coby, might die, and that’s what you want from a horror story – to buy into the peril. Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s anthology series American Horror Stories was a mixed bag when it debuted last year, delivering a hodgepodge of isolated stories that varied wildly in their quality and connections to the wider mythology.

What Shows Will It Remind You Of? With one season of its own in the books and ten (!) seasons of American Horror Story to work with, you can expect more explorations and interweavings of the myriad characters and storylines in this franchise. Van Wirt is fond of dusty Old Testament quotes that couch the role of a woman in patriarchal toxicity, but he’s also caught out by Otis, arguing on the telephone with a distributor who declares his handmade dolls obsolete in the new face of America’s beauty ideal, Barbie. And Coby initially considers her impossible situation with a dose of polite mid century manners before gathering her wits and self-determination in a play to strike back at the wrongheaded predicament. (“You used a bouillon spoon for terrapin soup!”) Coby realizes that any kind of win is no win at all, and devises a plan for escape from the lifesize dollhouse. It’s something this franchise in its many parts has always done, to uphold the particular American-ness of its title. “You’re on my estate, and this is my private dollhouse.” Decorum goes out the barred windows as Coby realizes Van Wirt is deranged and she is his prisoner. Our Take: The twisted fairy tale angle of American Horror Stories is a fun one, with its access to that rich thematic history being emboldened by also connecting with a pulse distinct to our country’s cultural narrative. And she who survives the interactions with Otis and Van Wirt’s impossible challenges will get to be the perfect new mother and wife. The Gist: As Miss Coby Rae Dellum (Forseth) arrives for her job interview, Mr. Van Wirt (Denis O’Hare) waxes poetic about dolls and doll making. And Eustace (Matt Lasky), Van Wirt’s silent hook-handed hulk of a henchman, subdues her with chloroform. For when the Lord formed dust into man, he was seeking perfection.” It’s all Coby can do to smile along and point to her qualifications for the secretary position. American Horror Stories, the anthology television series from Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, creators of the American Story universe, returns to FX on Hulu for a second season of eccentric and episodic frights. Opening Shot: The Van Wirt Toy Company, and its bustling loading dock.

American Horror Stories Season-Premiere Recap: Doll Eyes, Doll ... (Vulture)

The premiere gives us a mixed bag of old and new with an original character that provides an origin story for a “Coven” character. A recap of “Dollhouse,” ...

She endures her new hellscape for a week or so before two witches, presumably of the same original coven to welcome in Fiona at Miss Robichaux’s, burst in and come to Coby’s rescue, also taking Otis under their wing and setting the dollhouse ablaze. The tests the “dolls” are put through are ridiculous indicators of what would be expected of them should they “win” in the end and take permanent residence in the dollhouse alongside Van Wirt and young Otis. They set the table for a fancy lunch; they learn to make some weird fragrant spray used to iron and fold (not crease) dress shirts. As everyone’s making a run for it, the other surviving “dolls” who made it to the final round of Van Wirt’s ordeal are ultimately killed as well by Eustace, while Coby doubles back to rescue Otis from his terrifying childhood. The full story of why Van Wirt is like this, or at least why he wants to make a living doll, comes together when Coby learns that his wife cheated on him with a younger man, both of whom were dispatched to the bottom of a wishing well by Eustace, where the losing dolls will also likely find themselves should they not endear themselves to Van Wirt. “Dolls have been around since the Egyptians,” Van Wirt says in the opening of “Dollhouse,” setting the scene. Without American Horror Stories, we may have never known that while Coven’s Fiona Goode (Jessica Lange) detests the look and smell of knotty pine, she has a history with, and perhaps a hardwired affinity for, things spiced with old Americana and Edwardian, courtesy of Spalding, who we meet as a young boy going by his first name, Otis (Houston Jax Towe), in “Dollhouse.”

American Horror Stories Season 2 Cast: Where You've Seen The ... (Cinema Blend)

Alicia Silverstone · Cody Fern · Max Greenfield · Nico Greetham · Denis O'Hare · Gabourey Sidibe · Dominique Jackson · Judith Light.

Next up, we have Kristin Froseth in American Horror Stories, who has appeared in a variety of movies and TV shows. Derrick Aguis had a minor role in American Horror Story: Double Feature, but has also appeared in several shorts and other TV shows. Now, if you don’t mind me, I’m going to go and re-watch the first season of American Horror Stories. She’s also appeared in television shows such as Still the King, and I Know What You Did Last Summer. Like many of his American Horror Stories co-stars, Cameron Cowperthwaite had a role on American Horror Story before, playing Speedwagon in Cult in 2017. He also had a guest role in American Horror Stories in 2021. Kyanna Simone has appeared in a variety of movies and television shows. Jackson has appeared in a variety of television shows, including American Gods, the FX series, Pose, where she played Elektra, and Strut. Some of her biggest roles on the small screen have been on One Life to Live, Who’s the Boss, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Ugly Betty, Dallas, Transparent, and The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. Light has also done a lot of theater work, as well. He’s also had a role in the Ice Age movie franchise as Roger, and has done several voice-over roles, too. Cody Fern has actually appeared in the American Horror Story main series before, playing Michael Langdon in American Horror Story: Apocalypse, but he’s had plenty of other roles. American Horror Stories made its debut on Hulu in 2021, showing off several different anthology stories with a new cast every single episode that truly captured some of the creepiest moments in AHS history.

What Happened to Spalding on 'AHS: Coven'? (Distractify)

'AHS: Coven' character Spalding makes an appearance in a new 'American Horror Stories' episode. What happened to him in 'American Horror Story'?

However, the two other women die in the process, while Coby attempts to also save Spalding’s son from his father. One of these women, Coby (Kristine Froseth), finds a way for herself and two other women to escape through some weak magic after they’ve already grown close to Spalding’s son. However, with a large cast and a multitude of storylines, it’s also one of the more complex seasons with some more complex characters. When he knocks out Marie Laveau (Angela Bassett) with a doll, he takes her stolen baby and calls the baby his first “living doll.” As AHS fans know, every season features a completely different cast of characters (although sometimes with the same cast of actors) in a new storyline. While many American Horror Stories fans may be die-hard AHS fans as well, Coven aired almost 10 years ago, so it’s hard to remember every detail from the season.

'American Horror Stories': 5 Things You May Have Missed in Season ... (Decider)

'American Horror Stories' has finally explained how Spalding came to 'Coven.' From Spalding's backstory to where you've seen Abby Corrigan before, ...

Now thanks to “Dollhouse”, we’ve glimpsed a version of this academy that seems functional and is thriving under the direction of Supreme Anna Leigh Leighton (Christine Ebersole). That’s insanely cool. As fun as this cameo is, it’s even cooler to see a version of Miss Robichaux’s Academy that doesn’t seem like it’s in complete disarray. The actor starred in Castle Rock, Hulu’s thriller set in the world of Stephen King. In the series, Corrigan played Georgia LaChance, one of the characters who goes to look for the body of Ace Merrill. If you need a refresher, Ace was the main bully in the movie Stand By Me as well as in the novella it’s based on, The Body. Also, the name of one of the kids he bullied? But instead of fleeing with her, he attacked her with a taser, a betrayal that led to his father turning Coby into a living, breathing doll. Much like with Coby, that mask comes to be a prison. By the end of the competition, the telekinetic Coby (Kristine Froseth) is the winner as she was the only one who tried to save little Otis (Houston Jax Towe) from his insane father. Throughout all of her tests, Coby is targeted by Aurelia (Abby Corrigan), another woman being held captive who is determined to be Otis’ mom no matter what. tongue.” Nothing is a coincidence on this show. Also, the only reason Otis didn’t tell his dad to kill Coby was because he liked her “magic” tricks. Before the witches saved Coby, she and Otis had a chance to escape. But this episode is also hiding a treat for longtime American Horror Story fans. The second season of this AHS spinoff starts with an instantly creepy premise.

Will There Be a Season 3 of 'American Horror Stories'? (Distractify)

The 'AHS' spinoff series, cleverly named 'American Horror Stories,' is back for Season 2 on FX on Hulu. But will there be a Season 3?

And because this is American Horror Story, a twist ending reveals a connection to American Horror Story: Coven — which was the third AHS installment. The American Horror Story series remains very popular for FX, so I have no doubt that this spinoff will be renewed," Telly Vulture of TV Series Finale wrote. Season 2 episodes are set to release every Thursday at 3 a.m. EST, and yet, people are already dying to know if American Horror Stories will get renewed for a third installment. The episode's synopsis is simple: "A job interview goes horribly wrong." Set in 1961, a girl named Coby is kidnapped during a job interview. With a frightening 50 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, it wouldn't appear too good for the series, but we know that viewership is often more important than what critics have to say.

American Horror Stories Is Back on Hulu With More 8 ... (menshealth.com)

The Hulu anthology series returns to bring some summer scares. Here's when new episodes of American Horror Stories come out.

Much like the original series, American Horror Stories holds nothing back. American Horror Stories Season 2 is now on Hulu, and much like the first season, the show won’t drop every episode all at once for viewers to binge. For those unaware, American Horror Story has a new plot and cast of characters every season, with occasional connections throughout the show (and names for each season such as Coven, Murder House, Apocalypse, Double Feature). Stories, meanwhile, has a new story each episode, with hardly any overlapping plot.

However, the marketing has already emphasised the return of some recognisable characters from previous seasons of the main show, including Dennis O’Hare in the first episode, Cody Fern in the second, and Gabourey Sidibe in the third. Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s maligned horror anthology American Horror Stories is back for a second season, presumably hoping to turn the first outing’s negative reception around. Since the series is an anthology, the core cast will change between episodes.

Who is Spalding in American Horror Story? Dollhouse explained (HITC)

American Horror Stories is an anthology series created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, serving as the third instalment of the American Story franchise. However ...

That brings us neatly into the American Horror Stories era… As you’ll know, Spalding’s son simply adopts his father’s name and grows up to become the man we meet in Coven. Spalding is played by Denis O’Hare and his inclusion dates back to season 3 of the original series, Coven. It doesn’t exactly work out though because Zoe (Taissa Farmiga) makes sure the tongue can speak whether it’s attached to Spalding or not. However, it’s a direct spin-off from the iconic American Horror Story. Only able to speak the truth, he cements his loyalty by chopping it off.

“American Horror Stories” Review – Season 2 Welcomes Viewers to ... (Bloody Disgusting)

Season two of 'American Horror Stories' kicks off with a perturbing pageant that pulls the strings on some porcelain prisoners.

At one point in “Dollhouse,” Van Wirt tells Otis to “treat your things with respect.” The way in which this episode handles the broader American Horror Story mythology does exactly that. “Dollhouse” actually has a strong premise, but it goes through the motions and falls flat when it comes to many of the specifics of this story. “Dollhouse” presents the broken down anatomy of a human, in doll form, as a sterile way of celebrating the human body. The scenes between each new pageant competition tread water and none of the other “dolls” make their mark. These living doll horror stories can be unique forms of punishment, prison, or perpetual arrested development, but American Horror Stories’ “Dollhouse” instead uses its dolls as a symbol of flawlessness. The presence of five dolls in Van Wirt’s twisted competition also feels like overkill and perhaps a smaller number of girls would have helped any of them make more of an impression.

American Horror Stories S2 Finally Explains Spalding's Coven Origins (Screen Rant)

American Horror Stories' season 2 episode 'Dollhouse' returns to AHS: Coven to tell the origin story of Miss Robichaux Academy's mute butler Spalding.

Although American Horror Stories season 2 makes Spalding’s AHS: Coven backstory more unsettling, it also explains that much of his odd obsessions and behaviors were ingrained by his father. Nearly a decade after Coven debuted, American Horror Stories’ “Dollhouse” character, Otis, reveals an even more terrifying backstory for Spalding. While American Horror Stories season 1 brought back characters from AHS: Murder House, season 2 is reviving at least one mysterious narrative from AHS: Coven.
