It stars Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen and Emma D’Arcy as his royal rival Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. And while it doesn’t look like any dragons were harmed in the making of the trailer or the show, it sure looks like a few super blond wigs should have lost their lives.
The series stars Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D'Arcy, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Fabien Frankel, Sonoya Mizuno, and Rhys Ifans. As expected, ...
Oh, it’s coming, Westeros lovers: Deadline revealed last year that HBO was developing a trio of ideas for new projects set within Martin’s world including 9 Voyages aka Sea Snake, Flea Bottom and 10,000 Ships. Bruno Heller was attached to the Sea Snakeproject, while Amanda Segel was tapped to write 10,000 Ships. Martin is set to appear Saturday with the cast at the House of the Dragon panel in Hall H. Panelists include Condal, Miguel Sapochnik, Considine (King Viserys Targaryen), Smith (Prince Daemon Targaryen), Cooke (Alicent Hightower), D’Arcy (Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen), Toussaint (Lord Corlys Velaryon), Best (Princess Rhaenys Targaryen), Frankel (Ser Criston Cole), Graham McTavish (Ser Harrold Westerling), Milly Alcock (Young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen), and Emily Carey (Young Alicent Hightower). Based on Martin’s Fire & Blood, the series is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and tells the story of House Targaryen. The series stars Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Fabien Frankel, Sonoya Mizuno, and Rhys Ifans. As expected, the trailer promises lots of sword play, blonde hair and the dubious declaration that a “woman would never inherit the Iron Throne.” The dragons are back, natch, but you don’t want to miss the medieval egg cooker that’s baking up the next fire breather from hell.

HBO has released the first trailer for 'House of the Dragon,' the 'Game of Thrones' prequel series debuting in August.
While there are other Westeros-related series in development, “House of the Dragon” is the only confirmed “Game of Thrones” spinoff show — so far. The war pits Westeros’ great houses — including the Lannisters and Starks — against each other, resulting in the death of House Targaryen’s most powerful dragons. Based on George R.R. Martin’s book “Fire & Blood,” “House of the Dragon” will follow the Dance of the Dragons, the Targaryen civil war between siblings Aegon II and Rhaenyra, who fought for the throne after the death of their father.
With just a month to go, more details are emerging on arguably the most anticipated new TV series of the year.
One of the only people on Earth to have seen House of the Dragon is George RR Martin himself, who wrote online: “Those of you who like complex, conflicted, grey characters (as I do) will like this series, I think. Put simply, if you’re excited about House of the Dragon, then remember this feeling. This is one of the most interesting aspects of the whole shebang. Taking place 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon will see the Targaryens in full pomp, although judging by nudges and hints from those in the know, this might not last for the entire duration of the series. And these challenges might explain why the House of the Dragon press onslaught has already begun. House of the Dragon is now one month away, and to say that it has an uphill struggle ahead of it is an understatement.
The official new trailer plus a behind-the-scenes report on the new series – including how 'Dragon' tackles certain 'Game of Thrones controversies.
“We knew from the outset that we wanted to change that conversation,” Condal says. “The Targaryens span both directions,” Sapochnik says. “There have been no conversations other than everybody is excited about Dragon,” Bloys says, with Orsi concurring: “If four of these scripts came in and they were all great, I would say, ‘I need to make all of them.’ I don’t have my boss or his boss telling me, ‘This is the mission.'” “Sometimes I sit around trying to figure out who the hell I am in this whole scenario,” Martin muses candidly. We have a number of births in the show and basically decided to give them different themes and explore them from different perspectives the same way I did for a bunch of battles on Thrones.” Sapochnik says the production also “pulls back” on the amount of sex in the series while adding glimpses of how sex is a nonchalant aspect of Targaryen life. I was just like, ‘Oh wow,’ and then I thought: ‘OK, so this means a lot to some people, but I can’t allow that to bother me.'” What used to be sitting on a mechanical bull-like device in front of a greenscreen for mind-numbing hours now allows actors to see what their characters are seeing as they “fly” through the skies. There is also a focus on childbirth and its inherent dangers, a story thread that feels timely in the wake of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. “It’s a fucking pain in the neck — literally, physically and metaphorically,” says Smith, who gave our interview by phone while on the way to physical therapy months after the season had wrapped. It’s like going to an Ikea and trying all the kitchen taps.” D’Arcy (who uses “they/them” pronouns) was less known than some of the other actors in contention and looks entirely unlike the ethereal, platinum-blond Targaryens in real life.
HBO's Game Of Thrones prequel (and so many blonde wigs) are coming.
A character says, “Knives will come out,” and the next shot is of Prince Daemon (Matt Smith) being threatened with a knife. A voiceover reminds us that “your family has dragons” over footage of a scorched field. A different character proclaims, “War is afoot” over a shot of two factions squaring off to battle. Reminiscent of the thematically appropriate instrumental covers he became known for in his second HBO outing, this trailer features Djawadi’s orchestra-heavy cover of the Velvet Underground’s “Venus In Furs.” It’s a bit of an obvious choice, as the mashup literally features beautiful women wearing furs. The budget is enormous (seriously, the dragons looks amazing). And the battles are as muddy as ever. While we all know that no one has a better story than Bran the Broken (sigh), it is actually quite nice to revisit this world with a completely new cast of characters that a certain showrunning duo won’t have a chance to get their grubby hands on.

Ser Harrold is tasked with an important role: to protect Princess Rhaenyra, the chosen heir by King Viserys I. However, this is Westeros, and women can't rule.
Ser Harrold is going to be extremely important in the protection of his princess. At least, that’s the opinion of a lot of people. Their duty is to protect the king, and McTavish’s Ser Harrold Westerling takes his vow extremely seriously.

Rhaenyra is her own person who was born into this time of extreme power, wealth, and decadence whereas Daenerys was born a pauper because this dynasty fell—largely as a result of events in this story.” “It is very much a story about a patriarchy told through the point-of-view of two women.” This begins with the day Viserys names his firstborn daughter Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock in her youth, Emma D’Arcy later) as his heir, even as he’s urged to take a second wife in hopes of producing a son. [Daemon] is similarly a bit of a rogue prince trying to find his footing and place in this world.” Whereas Game of Thrones began in the 17th uneasy year of Robert Baratheon’s reign, House of the Dragon picks up 105 years after Aegon Targaryen I conquered Westeros and founded King’s Landing. It is there we’ll be introduced to a host of Targaryens of various political ambitions and a whole palace of new courtiers. “The trick with this story is it’s multi-generational,” Condal says. He’s the second fiddle, in that case to the Queen of England, his own wife, and is a bit adrift. Yet there’s an undeniable excitement in Condal’s voice while discussing the new show; he’s eager for fans to discover a different era of Westeros, one set about 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. “This is just a very decadent time,” Condal says. He first read the earliest books after the third novel A Storm of Swords was published in 2000, discovering the saga while fresh out of college. The two became acquainted in 2012, and Martin seemed eager to get Condal into Westeros ever since. “I thought we were just getting together socially,” Condal recalls in 2022, “but he said, ‘I need you to write a pilot for me.

"I heard the sound of thundering hooves, splintering shields, and ringing swords."
And I placed my heir upon the Iron Throne, and all the dragons roared as one." But this is Westeros, so there are others scheming for the Iron Throne, most notably Ser Otto Hightower, Hand of the King—whose daughter Alicent becomes the king's second wife and wants her son Aegon to be the heir—and Prince Daemon Targaryen, the king's younger brother. But it's the dragons, always a fan favorite, who dominate the new trailer. The final two sections of Fire and Blood deal with the fallout of that crisis and serve as the primary source material for House of the Dragon. Miguel Sapochnik—who filmed some of the most eye-popping, complicated battles on Game of Thrones—serves as co-showrunner with series co-creators Martin and Ryan J. Condal. Sapochnik directed the pilot and several other episodes. Those events culminated in a civil war and the extinction of the dragons—at least until Daenerys Targaryen came along two centuries later.
