Warriors signing JaMychal Green as a backup big (Golden State of Mind)

The Oklahoma City Thunder are buying out their oldest player, and he's coming to San Francisco. The Warriors get a stretch power forward, Green gets to hang out ...

He’s a good rebounder, and he’s had success playing as a small-ball center, including against the Warriors in the 2019 playoffs against the Clippers. He’s not much of a passer, but he’s a skilled defender who never lacks in effort. And with the final spot being held for Andre Iguodala, this essentially closes the book on the Warriors off-season, aside from the decision on the second two-way contract spot. Green went undrafted out of Alabama in 2012, and fought his way into the NBA after two-and-a-half years of playing overseas, in the G League, and at Summer League before finally sticking with the Grizzlies in 2015. And while he played with quality teammates in Denver, Los Angeles, and Memphis, it’s safe to say that he’s never experienced the consistent wide-open shots that come from sharing the court with Steph Curry. This signing won’t necessarily cut into the minutes for Wiseman or Jonathan Kuminga, but it does provide a huge cushion against injuries, or young players being, well, inconsistent young players. This isn’t a player who needs a lot of shots, but he can knock them down when the ball comes to him. Regardless, they found no takers, and with a roster absolutely bursting with young prospects, the Thunder decided to buy Green out. Even with James Wiseman staying healthy in Summer League while setting beefier screens, and after the drafting of project big Patrick Baldwin Jr. in the first round of the draft, there was still a Porter-sized hole on the roster, and that hole was lurking behind the three-point line in the corner. And the pickings were extremely slim aside from Green. Look at who was left on the free agent market: - Blake Griffin, who the Warriors would only acquire to mentor Wiseman about how to rehab knee injuries. Or maybe they thought three 2022 first-rounders was enough, and they wanted to take a flyer on Denver being bad in the 2026-27 season. After the departures of Otto Porter Jr. and Nemanja Bjelica this summer, there’s been questions on how the Golden State Warriors would round out their frontcourt rotation.

Oklahoma City is still in the process of paring down its overloaded roster. Entering ’21/22, he had knocked down 38.0% of his three-point attempts in his first seven NBA seasons. Golden State’s cap hit would be $1,836,090, Bobby Marks of ESPN tweets. Denver dealt Green to the Thunder in June. The Nuggets also sent a protected 2027 first-round pick to the Thunder in exchange for the draft rights to No. 30 pick Peyton Watson and two second-rounders (one in 2023 and one in 2024). Once it is completed and he clears waivers, Green intends to sign with the defending champion Warriors. Green, 32, is at the stage of his career where he provides greater value to a contender than a rebuilding team.

Green was traded to the Thunder on draft night from the Denver Nuggets.

Prior to a two-year stint with the Nuggets, Green was a key contributor off the bench for the Clippers from 2018-2020. Green being on an expiring contract is a smart financial low risk move that could end up being an underrated signing when the playoffs roll around. Green was traded to the Thunder on draft night from the Nuggets, and is on an $8.2 million expiring contract for next season.

JaMychal Green To Join Warriors After Buyout With Oklahoma City (Sports Illustrated)

Veteran forward JaMychal Green is set to be bought out by the Oklahoma City Thunder and then sign a deal with the Golden State Warriors.

It is expected that once he clears waivers that JaMychal Green will be signing a one-year, veteran’s minimum deal with the Warriors. With the way the game has changed, JaMychal Green has seen some time at the center position and when he joins the Golden State Warriors, he could continue to see this kind of role for himself. Upon agreeing to this buyout with the Thunder, Green plans to sign with the Golden State Warriors, who are coming off their fourth title run in the last eight seasons.

Examining JaMychal Green's fit with the Warriors (Golden State of Mind)

Role players — especially when they play their hearts out and produce — occupy a special place within Warriors fans' hearts. But those role players have often ...

In particular, as the weak-side low man tasked to be the first line of help defense, Green is more than capable. The one aspect where Green and Porter Jr. are eerily similar are their rebounding metrics. Like Porter Jr., individual on-ball defense isn’t his strongest suit, but it isn’t the worst thing in the world whenever he’s tasked to defend a shifty and quick wing or guard. He drilled a mere 26.6% of his threes on only 1.9 attempts last season; not counting his first season in the league (only 24 games played), both marks are career lows. Also like Porter Jr., Green’s strongest suit on defense may be as a team defender. He replicated those numbers during his 2020-21 stint with the Nuggets: 42.1% on corner shots, and 39.0% on above-the-break attempts. Most of the defensive attention won’t be geared toward him; he’s shown a penchant for punishing such inattention in the past. Such a threat generates plenty of advantages on offense, and Green feasted on opportunities that were produced by his MVP teammate. Green is a *slight* downgrade: 36.6% on 2.2 attempts from beyond the arc over his eight-year career. Gary Payton II, a journeyman who has developed a reputation as one of the league’s premier perimeter defenders, will be sorely missed. It’s reasonable to conclude that Green’s shooting woes last season were an anomalous occurrence, even if it is as equally reasonable to look at such woes as a reason for concern. Green shot 12-of-23 on threes — a blistering 52.2%.

What does JaMychal Green bring to the Warriors as a stretch big off ... (The Athletic)

The Warriors intend to sign Green once he completes his buyout with the Thunder, a veteran-minimum bargain for the reigning NBA champions.

The Warriors were a plus-45 with him on the floor in that series, and a minus-41 with him off it. Part of the reason the Nuggets were willing to part with him was because of his down season from deep. That led to the pivot to JaMychal Green instead of a chase for a DeMarcus Cousins or Tristan Thompson type. But he hit a steep dip this past season and, because of it, has fallen back to the veteran-minimum range, where the Warriors hope they’ve unearthed another one-season steal in the Porter mold. Draymond Green had enough of Williams ripping up the Warriors’ defense, so he committed to showing Williams an extra body in the paint. He made 7 of 11 from 3 in the Game 3 and Game 4 wins. Green showed patience and on-the-move accuracy with a pump fake and sidestep to avoid the Durant closeout. They came to the realization that in 2021 — despite the Curry boost — you couldn’t persistently handcuff an offense with two non-shooters on the floor at nearly all times. That’s become relevant again with the news that dropped Tuesday. As first reported by The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the Warriors intend to sign Green once he completes his impending buyout with the Thunder, a veteran-minimum bargain to bolster the back end of their rotation. Much of that affection spawned during the 2019 first-round series, when he repeatedly burned a collapsing scheme. Williams and Harrell were better able to thrive because, in the middle of the series, Doc Rivers benched his centers and went with smaller lineups that spread the floor around those two. That’s what made JaMychal Green such a necessary component of the Clippers’ planned attack.

Prio to his down shooting season last year, Green shot 38% or better from beyond the arc on over two attempts per game in his previous three seasons with Denver, the Memphis Grizzlies and the Los Angeles Clippers. Before he suits up with the Thunder officially, the eight-year veteran will receive a buyout in Oklahoma City and head to the Bay Area after clearing waivers. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, JaMychal Green intends to sign with the Warriors after finalizing a buyout with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Green was in the final year of his contract for $8.2 million.

The Thunder acquired JaMychal Green from the Nuggets in a trade. He will take a buyout, clear waivers then sign with the Warriors.

He’s a solid pickup for the minimum. But Green is a steadier veteran option in case Kuminga and Wiseman aren’t ready. Green was never long for Oklahoma City. The 32-year-old just doesn’t make sense on a rebuilding team with plenty of young players to fill roster spots.

Warriors are adding JaMychal Green, which version will they get? (San Francisco Chronicle)

JaMychal Green struggled to shoot last season, but the Golden State Warriors' motivation to sign him is rooted in the reputation he built over his career.

That allowed Green to confound the Warriors’ defense with a barrage of 3-pointers. Though the Warriors could use some more floor-spacing with Bjelica and Porter gone, they don’t need their latest addition to log 20-plus minutes a night. After Green finalizes a contract buyout with Oklahoma City and clears waivers, the Warriors will welcome him to San Francisco, adamant that he can still help a winning organization. To help compensate for the subpar 3-point percentage, he played hard on defense, crashed the glass and made 87.1% of his free throws. The Warriors want a backup big to help replace Nemanja Bjelica and Otto Porter Jr. Meanwhile, Green hopes to resuscitate his market value by playing a key role on the defending NBA champions. By shooting just 26.6% from 3-point range, Green lowered his career clip beyond the arc to 36.6.

The Oklahoma City Thunder acquired JaMychal Green just weeks ago, but the two sides have already agreed to part ways via buyout with Green.

While the Oklahoma City Thunder are still in the midst of their rebuild, their roster is far from settled. The team has to get that down to 17 rostered players (including both two-way slots, and 15 standard deals) by October 19th ahead of the 2022-23 regular season. The Oklahoma City Thunder have had a jam-packed offseason, with still more transitions to come.
