Cameron Smith was in no mood to talk about LIV Golf rumors after he won the Open Championship on Sunday in St. Andrews.
Is there any truth in that?” “Cam, apologies for having to bring this up in these circumstances, but your name continues to be mentioned, has been mentioned to me this week about LIV Golf,” the reporter said. Is there any truth to suggestions that you might be signing?”

While Smith likely won't command that value, it can be expected that the 28-year-old Australian is attracted to the prospect of earning a nine-figure deal. LIV Golf has enticed top players to make the leap from the PGA Tour by handing out substantial contracts. "I don’t know, mate.
The Dallas-based golf analyst David Feherty has left the NBC after seven years in order to join the LIV Golf tour's broadcasts, according to an article from ...
The decision comes days after Feherty finished NBC’s coverage of last weekend’s British Open. He is expected to be an analyst on the 8-10 LIV golf tournaments each year. These detractors have had their memberships suspended and while there are still tournaments LIV golfers can participate in, these opportunities may become slimmer in the future. The Dallas-based golf analyst David Feherty has left the NBC after seven years in order to join the LIV Golf tour’s broadcasts, according to an article from the New York Post.
Rumors are flying about which golfers will defect to LIV Golf but it appears the latest name to make the jump is broadcaster David Feherty.
He’s joined in the booth by former Golf Channel analyst Jerry Foltz and Dom Boulet. According to a report in the New York Post, longtime NBC Sports and Golf Channel analyst and TV host David Feherty is making the move. In 2022, there are eight LIV Golf events, which are 54 holes with no cuts and guaranteed money for the 48-player fields, as well as multi-million dollar deals, some in the ballpark of $100-plus million.
According to the New York Post, the longtime golf analyst will call eight to 10 events per year with LIV Golf.
Prior to that he worked for CBS Sports, which hired him in 1997. That show was canceled in January 2021. LIV Golf's broadcast booth for the first two events has included play-by-play anchor Arlo White, who previously worked for NBC Sports calling matches in the Premier League, as well as analyst Jerry Foltz, previously of Golf Channel.
Cameron Smith brought his claret jug to the news conference, then fielded questions about LIV Golf.
I might have gotten a little aggressive with the comments.’ No, I mean, like I said, I was just in the moment with them. I watch F1. I was so pumped to be able to spray champagne like they do in F1. I was in the moment. Gooch, who was a member of the winning team in the second LIV event in June in Oregon, said Friday: “Everybody, it feels like, is against us, and that’s okay. I think in some capacity we’ll find a way to coexist and work together through this to make the best entertainment we possibly can for the world.” I was in the moment. A funky year found a quintessence right there, all as Smith refrained from dismissing the prospect he might become the first player to win a major tournament and then quit competitive tour golf for LIV and its soft, cut-free, 54-hole excursions. Golf-wise, LIV golfers fared much better than at the U.S. Open near Boston in June, when they happened to pose no real relevance. The 2013 champion, Phil Mickelson, didn’t get invited to the champions’ dinner. A fair follow-up came 17th, out of the total of 31. The 1986 and 1993 champion, Greg Norman, head honcho of LIV, didn’t get invited at all. Follow-up question: I appreciate that, but the question is still there. Question: Cam, apologies for having to bring this up in these circumstances, but your name continues to be mentioned — has been mentioned to me this week about LIV Golf. What’s your position?

The 63-year-old analyst and on-course reporter for NBC Sports and Golf Channel is expected to become an analyst for LIV Golf, which has six events remaining on its 2022 schedule. Over 20 years after the attacks, the arrival of LIV Golf further reveals a U.S.-Saudi relationship that remains complicated. As a presidential candidate, Trump had raised the issue of Saudi involvement in the attacks. In a letter to Biden dated from Sunday, the group 9-11 Families United asked to meet with the president and wrote: “It pains us to say it but you are the first president since the Sept. 11 attacks who has not met with the families and survivors. “It is incomprehensible to us that a former president of the United States would cast our loved ones aside for personal financial gain,” the group’s letter continued.

While some may not agree, we believe golf is a force for good around the world." Brett Eagleson is an advocate for the group and his father, John Bruce Eagleson, was among those who died during the World Trade Center attacks. "The FBI notes that much information has come to light since the 9/11 Commission published its report in 2004," Eagleson writes in the letter, "and refers repeatedly to the existence of US-based Saudi 'support networks' for the 9/11 hijackers." CNN has reached out to representatives for Trump and the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster for comment. In the letter, he says the decision has caused "deep pain and anger" among constituents, given Saudi Arabia's alleged role in the attacks and material support of al Qaeda, as outlined by FBI reports. "The Saudi nation is largely responsible for the death of our loved ones and for the horrific attack on America. And you know it," 9/11 Justice, which represents survivors and family members of the terrorist attacks, said in the letter.

While some may not agree, we believe golf is a force for good around the world.” A New York City native, Trump’s comments come just days after families of 9/11 victims and survivors sent a letter to condemn the former president for hosting the Saudi-funded series. “If you don’t take the money now, you will get nothing after the merger takes place, and only say how smart the original signees were.”
Golfers who choose not to join LIV Golf “will pay a big price,” according to Trump, who is closely linked to the Saudi-funded PGA Tour competitor.
Members of the advocacy group 9/11 Justice called on Trump to cancel the upcoming LIV Golf tournament in a letter Sunday. “It is incomprehensible to us that a former president of the United States would cast our loved ones aside for personal financial gain,” the group, consisting of family members of people who died in the 2001 attacks, wrote in the letter. Trump wrote in the post: "All of those golfers that remain 'loyal' to the very disloyal PGA, in all of its different forms, will pay a big price when the inevitable MERGER with LIV comes, and you get nothing but a big 'thank you' from PGA officials who are making Millions of Dollars a year. Trump has never let ethics get in the way of a good business deal. The Tour likes to pretend it's a democracy, but it's really a dictatorship. (While the Saudi government has not been directly linked to the 9/11 attacks, 15 of the 19 men who hijacked planes that day were Saudi nationals. That's the trifecta in Trump's world -- ethical concerns be damned. So far, it has recruited a handful of big names, most notably Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson. Golf legend Greg Norman has been leading the LIV efforts. but added: "This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reshape how the PGA Tour operates.

Television commentator David Feherty is pictured in 2008. The next time you hear David Feherty's voice it will be on a LIV Golf broadcast. Eoin Clarke/Golffile.
As it becomes increasingly obvious that some guys will forsake all other career-related factors in favor of money, Feherty’s political conscience and moral compass make his departure from NBC a shocker. His incomparable wit has all but vanished, the humorous references no longer a part of his on-air repertoire. McIlroy was the overwhelming crowd favorite, urged on by roars once reserved for Tiger Woods. The vocal reverberations testified not only to the princely prodigy’s having gone eight years without claiming another major, but the front-line leadership role McIlroy has assumed in denouncing LIV Golf and expressing unconditional loyalty to a tour that has made him very, very rich and only slightly less famous. His countryman was given the 2012 Outstanding Civilian Service Award for years of tireless contributions to those who served in the U.S. Army. Feherty would be the last guy you’d expect to bolt from a cushy job at a major network for a similar position with LIV Golf, which fends off a comprehensive lack of credibility with alarming sums of money from perhaps the most reviled country on earth. “To shoot 64 and win an Open Championship at St. Andrews is a hell of a showing, and hats off to Cam.” Gracious, indeed, but it was the vociferous support of the Old Course throng all weekend that had to make this defeat exceptionally difficult to reconcile. Both men love America. McIlroy established his preference for the PGA Tour even before he won the first of his four major titles, all by the age of 25.

Cannizzaro: "LIV is here and, for the good of the sport, compromises must be made on both sides so there can be some sort of coexistence" ( N.Y. POST, 7/19). In D.C., Chuck Culpepper writes for now at least, there is a "two-part ritual for men’s golf majors: Watch the golf tournament, then wonder about the golf future." The 3M and Tournament Dir Hollis Cavner have "always done good work bringing a quality tournament to Minnesota," and this year's field "again features plenty of interesting names," including Hideki Matsuyama and Tony Finau( Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 7/19). In St. Paul, Jace Frederick writes just because a tournament "doesn't feature a bevy of players sitting atop the Official World Golf Rankings doesn’t mean it will not feature good golfers." Some of the "hottest players on Tour will indeed be in the Twin Cities this week" ( St. Paul PIONEER PRESS, 7/19). Watch a "guy win and maybe even dazzle," as did Smith at the Open Championship. Then, "wonder if he’s going to LIV Golf" ( WASHINGTON POST, 7/19). Trump wrote in a post on his own social media network Truth Social, "All of those golfers that remain ‘loyal’ to the very disloyal PGA, in all of its different forms, will pay a big price when the inevitable MERGER with LIV comes." TRUMP WEIGHS IN...: Former President Donald Trump has "urged golfers to 'take the money' and sign with the Saudi-backed LIV series." A capable replacement would be "duly installed," but the "damage would have been done to the status of the Ryder Cup." Stenson has a meeting today with the DP World Tour, but his defection would be the "biggest blow yet for the established tours" ( LONDON TIMES, 7/19). In London, Oliver Brown writes the Ryder Cup is "one of the game’s most cherished institutions," the one event for which "superstars set aside the pursuit of money out of loyalty to their tours." New names are "due to be announced" by LIV Golf today, and if Open Championship winner Cameron Smith is one of them, it will be "both the tipping point and game changer" in the battle between LIV and the PGA Tourand DP World Tour, according to Rick Broadbent of the LONDON TIMES. Smith, No. 2 in the world, would be the "killer blow for the traditional tours as the trickle becomes a tide." Smith is 28, "in his prime," the Open champion and a "breath of fresh air." RYDER CUP IMPLICATIONS: In London, John Westerby writes the Ryder Cup was "supposed to be the ultimate drawcard for the traditional tours." But if being named Europe’s captain is "not enough to keep Henrik Stensonon board for the next contest," to be held in Rome next year, those assumptions about the Ryder Cup can "no longer really apply." The days of "dismissing it as a sideshow, a circus or Twenty20-lite have gone."
Former President Donald Trump has urged players to "take the money" and join the LIV Golf Invitational Series.
The PGA Tour and DP World Tour in Europe are united in their stand against LIV and three weeks ago announced a strengthening of their alliance to combat the threat. The Saudi Arabia-backed LIV Golf series has lured players with the promise of guaranteed, big-money paydays and a reduced schedule while the US-based PGA Tour has suspended members who opted to join the breakaway circuit. Former President Donald Trump has urged players to “take the money” and join the LIV Golf Invitational Series, suggesting that those who remain loyal to the PGA Tour will ultimately pay a bigger price for staying put.
Trump's next move on his personal Revenge Tour against the PGA: Align himself with LIV, which will stage two events at his properties.
The PGA and Trump Organization announced a settlement in December over the decision to move the 2022 championship. The 2022 PGA Championship was going to be the first men’s major played on a Trump property. Trump had instructed his British ambassador to work on trying to secure an Open at Turnberry. That speculation is centering around Aussie Cameron Smith, who on Sunday won the Open Championship, and several others ranked in the top 100 in the world. So Trump's next move on his personal Revenge Tour against the PGA: Align himself with LIV, which will stage two events at his properties. Five police officers died as a result of the insurrection, which many believe was incited by Trump. This is an attack just like they attacked us on American soil.” The season-finale of the 2022 LIV series is scheduled for Doral Oct. 27-30. But after watching Trump stoke his supporters and the ensuing riot at the Capitol, the decision was made to move the event. But I will not be watching it. “I will not watch it. In typical Trump petty, retaliatory style, he told golfers to, "take the money now," predicting the Tour would eventually merge with LIV Golf. Trump's anger at the PGA Tour stems from the PGA of America moving the 2022 PGA Championship out of his club in Bedminster, N.J., after the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection on the US Capitol.
The LIV Golf Invitational Series event at Trump National Golf Bedminster is still a week away, but Donald Trump just couldn't wait to stir the pot.

That said, the series has scheduled expansion to 14 events and will re-brand as the LIV Golf League in 2023, and more players are expected to be announced throughout the year. Golfweek reporter Adam Woodard spent the entire week in Portland covering the LIV Golf event. One major success story for LIV Golf is its strategy to play to the fans in multiple ways. The noise outside the LIV Golf bubble is deafening with talks of lawsuits, bans and Official World Golf Ranking points. Team gear was seen everywhere, mostly for Mickelson’s Hy-Flyers. The fan zone is loaded with games and activities, so much so that you can forget you’re supposed to be at a golf tournament. Big numbers on scorecards produce big numbers in bank accounts – just ask Perez, who shot an 80 in the final round and still made $900,000. Another subtle change to the normal tour life that players enjoy. And people wonder where the term “sportswash” comes from. That trend continued during the press conference with Brooks Koepka, Patrick Reed and Pat Perez. You don’t see that at the Sanderson Farms Championship. The Wi-Fi wasn’t working when the media center opened. If you’re an avid fan who loves the game for the history and competition, these events likely won’t be for you.
