ESPN's 'The Captain' Tries to Unpack Derek Jeter, the Iconic ... (Variety)

ESPN's 'The Captain' tries to unpack Derek Jeter and his Yankees legacy, despite Jeter's best efforts to remain a professional enigma.

With Jeter the ostensible main character, though, “The Captain” can’t quite delve into the nitty gritty of what made the Yankees so good — or, when they fell to a team like the 2004 Boston Red Sox, so frustrating — with enough depth to truly satisfy. With Jeter being far from the most revealing interview in the series, “The Captain” inevitably becomes more of a deep dive on the Yankees of the late nineties and early aughts as a cultural juggernaut, while remaining anchored to Jeter’s presence as its narrative constant. As a rule, the closest Jeter gets to revealing anything remotely personal is acknowledging how much growing up biracial in Kalamazoo, Michigan formed his “gotta be twice as good as everyone else” mentality going forward.

A Long Talk With Derek Jeter on Alex Rodriguez, Colin Kaepernick ... (TIME)

ESPN's new Derek Jeter documentary, 'The Captain,' counts as more than just eye-rolling hagiography. It grapples with controversy.

When I sat down and said I was going to do it, I said I was going to be honest about it. You have so much technology in the world to help you get it correct, that I don’t see any reason why not. You’re pretty honest about how, in your dealings with the press, you tried to keep things simple and not create any controversies and distractions. I have a chance to look back and give you my perspective of when I was going through it, and how I think about it now. When I was playing, more of the focus was on the field. I remember speaking to my wife, when we first met, she said ‘You’re always looking around.’ It just makes you think back to when you’re a child and you’re looking to see who’s staring. You can’t have a comment where you’re speaking for me when you’ve never asked the question about how I identify. It came to be when I was told to anticipate a call to get inducted into the Hall of Fame. I said, ‘Well, you know, I wanted to film it.’ Because my girls have never seen me play before and I just wanted to have the footage for myself. Because I didn’t want it to be a one-sided documentary. I want it to be real. And I always like to learn about people in all types of professions, and see their journey. And when I saw it, I started thinking, during my career, I never had a chance to reflect on any accomplishments.

Players Gotta Play—And Get Paid! What is Baseball Legend Derek ... (Parade Magazine)

Derek Jeter is one of the most famous baseball players ever. The retired Yankee is still worth quite a bit. Here's everything about Derek Jeter's net worth.

Either way, it is not known how much Jeter was paid for his participation in the movie. Derek Jeter stepped down as the CEO of the Marlins and sold his stake in the team following a 5-year contract in February of 2022. Just from his baseball salary alone from playing for the Yankees for 20 years, Derek Jeter made a reported $265 million. After playing in the minors for four seasons from 1992 to 1995, Jeter moved up to the majors and became an official Yankee. For his rookie year for the Yankees, Jeter was reportedly paid the minimum salary of $130,000, which is still nothing to sneeze at. As mentioned above, Derek Jeter ranks as the second highest earning baseball player of all time. One of the other minority shareholders of the team was reportedly basketball legend Michael Jordan. However, Derek Jeter parted ways with the Marlins and sold his stake back in February of 2022. Following his retirement from baseball, Jeter served a stint as CEO for the Miami Marlins. During that time, his salary as CEO was $5 million a year. Basically, Jeter is famous for being one of the most successful and celebrated professional baseball players in history and for being a record holder on the Yankees. According to Front Office Sports, when Jeter sold his stake in the team in February of 2022, it was reportedly worth $45 million. Jeter spent his entire 20 year Major League Baseball career playing for the Yankees, a rarity in professional sports. Jeter’s personal life was also the source of much celebrity gossip as he was quite the playboy in his heyday. Derek Jeter’s name is up there with Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio when it comes to the most famous players the New York Yankees (and baseball as a whole) have ever seen; during his 20-year stint playing for the team, he saw great success and amazing wins.

The racial identity of Derek Jeter was hardly discussed during his 20-season career with the New York Yankees. The first five minutes of "The Captain," ...

"I think the way to get him there was to build trust with him. "He was nothing like the guy that people saw for 20 years with the Yankees organization," Wilkins said. How important family is – and getting into the why family is important to him. Wilkins interviewed about 90 people for the project, he said, and typically spent three or four hours with the person. Wilkins had completed hours upon hours of other interviews at that point and presented Jeter with others' comments, which lead to some revealing reactions from No. 2. Wilkins wanted to show that Jeter’s bi-racial identity impacted who he was on and off the field. "When I conceived the story in my mind, race was absolutely going to be a part of it," director and producer Randy Wilkins told USA TODAY Sports. "I think it’s something that wasn’t talked about enough throughout his career. Be on the lookout for the draft footage. – compared to his deflective yet polite exchanges with the media. Jeter said he always remembered other people staring at his family while they were out in public. Episode 1 airs Monday at 10 p.m. on ESPN after the Home Run Derby and on Thursdays through Aug. 11. Jeter and "The Boss" re-visited that playbook in 2003, after Steinbrenner had lambasted his shortstop for attending a late-night birthday party during the 2002 season. They would tell the background stories of the most important names in Yankees history, drawing upon archival footage and fresh interviews from the clubhouse and field. But no one in the building that night would have dared call it a meaningless game. With ESPN and ESPN+ set to begin airing a seven-part series, “The Captain,” viewers will have an opportunity to know Jeter like never before. The snapshot remains frozen in time, Jeter leaping beyond first base, his fists raised toward the evening sky. You never know if the time is right, but it seemed to me that I was ready to do it.

Derek Jeter remains 'The Captain' of his narrative (The Washington Post)

The Yankees icon revealed little during his playing days. In his new ESPN documentary series, not much has changed.

As a player, Jeter tried to stay off the back pages of the New York tabloids. After confirming the incident, he turns his head and, as if facing someone sitting off camera, says, “Pretty sure that story doesn’t make this.” The Players’ Tribune also partnered with ESPN and Major League Baseball to help with its creation. He curses freely, tees off on critics and swims in his personal reservoir of pettiness. And yet he was the professional athlete who helped usher in this era of oversharing. “I think you have to draw the line,” Jeter says of protecting his privacy. They are the CEOs of their personal and professional lives. Or his love life — it’s implied that Jeter would enjoy a night out every now and then, taking small bites out of the Big Apple, but in the first five episodes his romantic relationships remain off-topic. Try to picture Jeter revealing this much of himself in the 1990s. Jeter was guarded and territorial, and thankfully his way hasn’t been imitated by athletes who care deeply about issues that matter in the world. There’s ice all around and, just after Jeter warns them about the conditions, he steps out and slips, screaming as he falls, “Oh, God!” All these years later, his buddies still get a kick out of that story.

The selection of Nevin goes down as the worst draft pick in Astros’ history. The Astros aren’t the only team with regrets from that day in 1992. He often would attend games at Yankee Stadium when he visited her in the summer. As the story goes, Astros scout Hal Newhouser implored his team to take Jeter with the first pick. The Astros opted to take the more experienced Phil Nevin, the Cal State Fullerton third baseman who was the best hitter in college baseball, and Jeter dropped all the way to No. 6 where the Yankees scooped him up. The Astros has the No. 1 overall pick in the 1992 draft, a year in which Jeter was the best high school baseball player in the country.

The Time I Tried and Failed to Profile Derek Jeter (New York Magazine)

A new ESPN documentary tries to figure out who Derek Jeter really is. My attempt to profile him showed that that's a very tough question to answer.

I thanked him for his time and told him I hope he likes the piece, whenever I figured out what it would be. I feel like I know him just as well today as I did then. When I joined New York Magazine in 2008 as the primary sportswriter for a non-sports publication, one of the first assignments from my non-sports-fluent editors was to “write a profile about Derek Jeter as he approaches retirement.” I think they thought the publication’s prestige, and the lure of a cover story, would inspire Jeter to grant a long, reflective sit-down. But I had begun to enjoy running up the hill every day, and I sensed it sort of tickled Jeter, too. “We gotta play a good game tonight,” “It’s special being a Yankee,” “You take it one day at a time” — that sort of stuff. As the days ticked by, he began chuckling the second I started walking up to him. (Meanwhile, Jeter hit .334 that season with 18 homers and finished third in MVP voting, at the age of 35. Though The Captain promises to be a comprehensive portrait, I can’t help but wonder how much of the “real” Jeter we’ll get to see because he has been so damn good at hiding it for the past quarter-century. It does a good job of describing that you-see-me-but-you-don’t-see-me nature of Jeter’s, the way he stood in front of every camera for 20 years and never gave away anything. I don’t remember what I asked, but the answer I received was, inevitably, a polite, canned one. (When I requested “an hour-long in-depth interview with Jeter” to the Yankees’ publicity department, they were polite enough not to laugh in my face. It wasn’t a traditional approach, but maybe that would work in my favor.

The first installment of ESPN's “The Captain” documentary series got off to a promising start telling the story of Yankees great Derek Jeter.

In six more episodes, the layers will peel back more and more. This is the significance of a Jeter docuseries. The man was a bastion of greatness and excellence for a whole generation of sports fans in the 1990s. Even better, we’ve now seen a skinny Jeter playing for Single-A Greensboro and arguing with an umpire. Fast forward a year later, and he committed 56 errors at shortstop in his first minor league season. Up until the start of the 1992 MLB Draft, Jeter expected to be picked first or fifth.

Following the release of ESPN's Derek Jeter docuseries, "The Captain," Jonathan Papelbon offered his thoughts on another documentary idea.

Moments like these, along with his always steady play, made Varitek something of a hero in Boston. Papelbon and Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek were teammates with the Red Sox between 2005-11, winning a World Series together in 2007. He was an integral part of the Red Sox’ drought-breaking 2004 World Series win, and was named as the team’s captain that offseason.
