He’s got good power from the left side of the plate to go along with an advanced approach in the box. He’s also improved his quickness defensively, giving him a strong chance to be able to stick at the shortstop position. “The upside for him is enormous,” Elias said. And Jackson’s grandfather, Tom, coached Oklahoma State baseball for 26 years. They even hit back-to-back homers in one game. Adding Holliday to the mix will go a long way toward ensuring that Baltimore's farm system remains strong as many of those prospects start to graduate within the next year or two. The Athletic's Keith Law had Baltimore's farm system ranked as the 10th-best group in MLB coming into this season. He's got excellent speed and some twitchiness to handle the position, but a lot will be determined by how he changes physically as his body continues to mature. Holliday is the oldest son of seven-time All-Star Matt Holliday. Matt was a seventh-round draft pick by the Rockies out of Stillwater High School in 1998. The 18-year-old was named Oklahoma's Baseball Player of the Year after a historic 2022 high school season. "Holliday has an advanced approach, no surprise given his roots, and a knack for putting the barrel on the ball.

In addition, a player enrolled at a four-year college is not eligible until the end of his junior year. The value decreases to $2,486,800 by pick 30 and $807,200 by No. 80. Pittsburgh used the fourth pick on second baseman Termarr Johnson of Mays High in Georgia, a product of baseball's Reviving Baseball in the Inner Cities program. Taken in the 11th round and 321st overall, he debuted this May 13. In contrast to other sports, baseball draft picks take time to reach the majors. The Orioles recovered from an 8-16 start to enter the All-Star break at 46-46, just 3 1/2 games back of a wild-card berth. Rocker, a 22-year-old from Georgia, failed to sign last year after the Mets became concerned over his physical. His dad was a seven-time All-Star and the 2007 NL batting champion. Jones is a 6-foot-3 18-year-old from Wesleyan High in Peachtree Corners, Georgia. He hit .570 with 13 homers, 39 RBIs, 72 runs, 33 walks and 32 stolen bases this year. Texas used the third pick on Kumar Rocker, a 6-foot-5 right-hander who failed to sign with the New York Mets after being selected 10th overall last year. Holliday, a left-handed-hitting shortstop from Stillwater High in Oklahoma, is 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds — quite a bit smaller than his 6-foot-4, 240-pound father. Texas chose Leiter with the No. 2 pick last year.

Stillwater's Jackson Holliday is projected to be a top-5 pick in the 2022 Major League Baseball Draft on Sunday.

Jackson may have grown up, imitating the swing of big-league players. All those years ago, Holliday was just a kid in the stands, pretending to be a professional baseball player. “It’s starting to get a little bit more real,” Jackson said. “I think (Jackson’s) pretty nervous just to find out because it decides what the next 10 years looks like.” Throughout this time, Jackson has taken the opportunity to play baseball. It’s his swing. Matt finished second in the National League Most Valuable Player voting in 2007 after leading the Rockies to their first-ever World Series appearance. But despite who his father is, Jackson hasn’t been treated any differently from the other kids. If not, I’ll get to go to OSU and play with a lot of my friends, my uncle and my dad. “You wouldn’t know that’s my dad when I was little,” Jackson said. “It’s kind of just in my blood, I guess. He also tallied 37 singles, 29 doubles and six triples.

Pitcher Kumar Rocker, unsigned by the Mets after being chosen 10th last year, was a surprise selection by the Rangers with the No. 3 pick.

Yet even as those born into baseball dominated the first round, Sunday night’s class also was historic for its diversity: For the first time in major league history, four of the first five picks are Black, an encouraging trend for a game that has seen the number of Black players drop precipitously over the past few decades. At No. 5, the Nationals made IMG Academy outfielder Elijah Green their highest draft pick since Bryce Harper in 2010, opting for upside instead of a more proven college player for the second straight season. All of those picks are on track to make the majors within the next year or so. Because the Mets did not sign him last year, they were awarded an additional first-round pick this year and chose twice in the first 14 selections. And they added another young talent to a system that recently produced Adley Rutschman and has top prospects Gunnar Henderson and Grayson Rodriguez likely to debut soon. As it happened, he was selected significantly higher than before — as the first pitcher in a draft class that did not contain as many first-round arms as normal.

Holliday, son of seven-time All-Star Matt Holliday, could mimic batting stances of MLB superstars as a child.

According to a New York Times profile on Matt's family before the 2007 World Series, the then 3-year-old Jackson often mimicked the batting stances of MLB superstars such as Albert Pujols and David Ortiz. As the son of seven-time All-Star and World Series champion Matt Holliday, Jackson Holliday's path to Major League Baseball was clearer than most. Longtime Rockies video coordinator Brian Jones added Jackson "just picks up on everything."

But I think I have a little bit of a step up because I was able to be there with my dad.” He was 3 years old at the time. Parada said he had also played the outfield and corner infield positions. On Sunday, though, the draft began with a rare flurry of the familiar. “I want to win, I’m a leader, I can hit,” Parada said, when asked to describe himself as a player. “I grew up being a catcher,” he said. “You have more of an understanding of what to expect at the next level,” Justin Crawford said. Their interest dimmed because of concerns about Rocker’s right arm, and while he has since had minor shoulder surgery, he was pitching well for an independent league team this season. The Arizona Diamondbacks then chose Druw Jones, an outfielder from Wesleyan High School in Georgia, before the Texas Rangers grabbed the right-hander Kumar Rocker. In three seasons, he went 28-10 with a 2.89 E.R.A., averaging 12.2 strikeouts per nine innings. Rocker has been a phenomenon for years; as a freshman at Vanderbilt University in 2019, he threw a no-hitter in the N.C.A.A. tournament on his way to a College World Series title. The Baltimore Orioles selected high school shortstop Jackson Holliday with the first overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft on Sunday.

This was the second time in four years that the O's owned the first overall pick. Rutschman was called up to the bigs for the first time in May. Holliday is committed to Oklahoma State but won't be suiting up for the Cowboys as long as Baltimore can ink him to a contract. "Holliday has an advanced approach, no surprise given his roots, and a knack for putting the barrel on the ball," MLB.com's scouting report of the shortstop from earlier this year says. The 6-foot-1,175-pound left-handed hitter posted a .685 batting average with 17 home runs, 79 RBIs and a 2.141 OPS in 41 games as a senior at Stillwater High School in Oklahoma. He's throwing better too, and his solid to plus arm strength and enhanced quickness give him a better opportunity to remain at shortstop.
