Acuna has a chance at the title if Soto’s long swing gets the best of him in what is expected to be a warm early evening in Los Angeles. There is plenty to like about No. 4 seed Juan Soto (+600) of the Washington Nationals, whose long power stroke was clipped by Alonso last year on a last-second blast in the second round. The wild card of this year’s Derby is Mariners rookie Julio Rodriguez (+1000), the No. 6 seed, who has youth on his side for the grueling event, but has never been on a stage like this. He played his first seven seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers and was a two-time All-Star. Like Soto, No. 7 seed Ronald Acuna Jr. of the Atlanta Braves (+600) has plenty to like, and also has the athleticism that could prove vital for the demanding ride. Will Alonso have the drive necessary to win three consecutive titles?

The Phillies star has tape-measure power and finished second in the Home Run Derby in 2017 behind Bryce Harper. He’s taken the big leagues by storm, slugging 15 homers in 88 games for the Mariners. Albert Pujols is a bit of a surprise here but his return to the derby is surely going to be a hit with fans. There isn’t a lot expected out of Pujols, but the fact that he’s going to be at the event is special in itself. Each participant will have three minutes in the first and second rounds then just two minutes in the final round. No. 8 Pujols (6)

If Alonso is the favorite, it likely means that Acuna is going to have his hands full in round one. Ronald Acuna is +500 to win the Home Run Derby but will have to take on Pete Alonso in the tournament's first round. It's weird that Acuna has the fourth-best odds to win this thing when he's going up against Alonso to start things off. We always hear about how rookies in the Derby struggle to keep pace. Rodriguez has all the tools but could burn out and might not know the proper way to prepare for these types of things. Pete Alonso has won two straight Home Run Derbys and will look to win his third straight this season. Ramirez isn't getting much love at +1500. Ramirez's power surge has cooled off in the last month of baseball, but I don't think that will have an effect on his derby potential. But Soto is now considered a veteran in the Derby. That's valuable. On Monday, we'll have eight sluggers compete in the 2022 Home Run Derby in Dodger Stadium. The Home Run Derby is in a bracket format, so even if you have the second-best production out of eight contestants, it doesn't mean you're going to move on into the next round. He was involved in the Derby last year and hit a 520-foot bomb. Juan Soto is the third favorite in the Derby this season. Schwarber has 28 home runs on the season and finished runner-up in 2018 against now-teammate Bryce Harper.

Anaheim Stadium (Anaheim) Anaheim Stadium (Anaheim) The home run derby is a three round slugfest (literally), with each batter getting three minutes to smack as many balls over the fence as possible. The champ: Pete Alonso The challengers: Kyle Schwarber, Corey Seager, Juan Soto, José Ramírez, Julio Rodríguez, Ronald Acuña Jr. and Albert Pujols.
His 15 homers of 440-plus feet in the Derby were tied for the most with Harper, and his average home run distance of 426 feet and exit velocity of 104.6 mph were the highest in the Derby. In the Derby overall, Soto hit 11 home runs 475 feet or farther. He ultimately fell to Alonso in the second round, but if they have a rematch in 2022? Schwarber also has by far the most barrels of anyone in the Derby, 47, second in the Majors only to home run leader Judge. Barrels are Statcast's top level of contact -- balls hit at the optimal exit velocity and launch angle to be home runs. His epic first-round slugfest against Shohei Ohtani was one of the most memorable matchups in Derby history … and Soto won it. He'll get the benefit of being a righty slugger hitting at Dodger Stadium, which is one of the most favorable parks in baseball to hit home runs as a righty. The Braves star followed that with 19 more against Alonso, but Alonso tied him with under 10 seconds left and hit a "walk-off" homer as time expired. If you're trying to find a Derby threat to Alonso, you want someone who can really hit the long ball. And even though he's competing in his fifth Home Run Derby, Pujols has never won one, even in his prime. Seager hit only two homers of 440-plus feet, and his average distance of 406 feet was on the lower end of the contestants. He's going for an unprecedented third straight Home Run Derby crown on Monday, and he's the favorite. J-Ram knows how to drive the ball in the air.
This has led to some truly epic showdowns, perhaps most notably Pete Alonso vs. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in 2019. Last year was not without its fireworks, however, ...
Whoever gets the most in that span advances to the next round/wins. The final round changes the format up a bit, as batters get just two minutes to swing. Round 2 follows the same rules as Round 1, and home runs do not carry over from round to round.

Jesse Yomtov: Pete Alonso – Chalk and deservedly so. Can Pete Alonso make it three in a row? Will Albert Pujols make a Cinderella run?
Secondly and more importantly, we've seen MLB go to lengths to give a little extra "juice" in the event -- notably refusing to use the humidor for the Derby balls in Coors Field last year. There are several players here capable of getting to 500 feet and he's one of them. Schwarber is mostly a gut feeling and he's been very locked in for weeks. He's always toward the top of that leaderboard and he hit one 481 feet last season. Seager won't be lighting up the distance leaderboard the way Alonso, Schwarber and company can, but he's plenty comfortable in Dodger Stadium and I think the crowd will be behind him. Alonso is so, so good at this and he's worth another deep run. It's pretty well-rounded, with off-the-charts-raw-power guys like Schwarber and Alonso to the gap power types like Ramírez, and we've already mentioned the vast gap in age between Pujols and Rodríguez. Seager now being with the Rangers after spending the first seven years of his career with the Dodgers will be fun in front of the L.A. fans. Here's how to watch the 2022 Home Run Derby. Thanks to MLB implementing a clock before the 2015 Derby and keeping it in place ever since, this event is one of the highlights of the season. -- even if you should see him take BP! -- because every MLB player rakes in batting practice. Will Alonso win for the third straight Derby? Can Pujols pull off the huge upset and take down Schwarber? It's going to be a blast. I'm not going to say anything stupid here like "you should see him take batting practice!"
How does Pete Alonso keep winning derbies -- and what's his secret to his pursuit of a three-peat? A good pitcher, a well-executed timeout -- and a focus on ...
"People tell me all the time that with the Derby balls and the environment that I'd probably be able to put one in the parking lot," Alonso said. It takes a special sort of confidence to step into a batter's box and whack a ball over the fence. So he embraces all of them -- and, in the process, likens himself to a carbonated beverage. But I think that the swing is one of those things -- it's almost like a baseball player's thumbprint." Because I want to practice in a similar tempo [as] the way that I play. "I have an area I'm looking for the ball to be in. As much as I have to hit 'em, the pitcher's gotta throw 'em. It's just as nerve-wracking for the pitcher as it is the hitter, because the pitcher has a responsibility to throw the ball over the dish. In timed derbies, it's not only imperative for a pitcher to find the hitter's sweet spot but also for the participant not to swing at substandard pitches. "Basically I'm just looking for a pitch in my area," Alonso said. "Mark actually texted me the other day, and he's pretty excited that I was gonna participate in the Derby. So it's really amazing that for me, I have a relationship with my childhood idols." For those who have the gumption to enter a home run derby, know that the backing of friends goes a long way. And in a recent interview with ESPN, Alonso peeled back the curtain on how he approaches the Derby and what it takes to win, whether you're a seasoned big leaguer or a rookie in search of glory.

In the Statcast Era, you've needed to be in the top four in Blast rate to win the Home Run Derby.
Pete Alonso was in the top four among derby contestants in this stat when we checked before his win in 2021, and second among the contestants when he won in 2019. It would give those kids out in the outfield a real workout.” Usually, it’s one of the favorites — in a three-year stretch heading into 2019, 65 percent of the matchups were won by the higher seed. Here’s the one that went the furthest. “He could really hit.” “Hyun-Jin Ryu always had good pop,” said Ross Stripling, who ended up in Toronto with his old teammate. “Absolutely I’d want in, I got some BP pop for sure,” said Cease, who relished the fact he wasn’t supposed to hear about it. “The only one that has a chance to beat me is Miles,” Wainwright asserted, “because he can go autopilot if the pitcher is throwing exactly in his spot. So if you throw it in that spot, he can go autopilot: homer, homer, homer, homer. “ Logan Webb has stupid pop.” And Ohtani for sure.” Would a couple rounds of a home run derby between pitchers scratch that itch?
One key component of Home Run Derby victory isn't the hitter's swing -- it's where the pitcher can put the ball. Here are the stories of this year's ...
Acuña and Perez agreed to practice a little over the weekend in Washington -- a timed minute. The belief among some of the competitors is experience will be crucial to defeat Alonso, and nobody has more Derby experience than Pujols, who is in this event for the fifth time. "Everybody in my country will be watching," said Perez, who pitches batting practice to Acuña in the Braves' daily regimen. "Anywhere in the strike zone," he said, chuckling. Peña's family runs a baseball academy in the Dominican Republic, and Rodriguez said that if not for Franmy and his father, he doesn't believe he would be in the event. His batting practice pitcher, Franmy Peña, was in Texas over the weekend, with a locker next to Rodriguez's, as part of their preparation for the Derby. Rather, his hope is that he gets a lot of pitches up in the zone so he can consistently get the ball in the air and over the fence, while conserving some of his energy for the swings to follow. Seager will likely be a favorite of the Dodger Stadium crowd in the Derby, as he returns to L.A. for the first time since he signed with the Texas Rangers as a free agent in the offseason. His ability to throw consistently in batting practice, Jauss said, laughing, is what "has kept me in the game. "He's such a quality guy, and good for the industry," Jauss said. As the last confirmed contestant, just 72 hours before the Derby, Seager made no plans to practice, to reacquaint himself with the pace of the event, the exhaustion that overtakes a lot of the competitors. Rather, he drove the 2 miles to Northwest Cabarrus High School, where he had thrown a zillion hours of batting practice to his sons within cages for which the Seagers possessed a key.

He has 24 home runs heading into the break and has put on absolute clinics in his last two derby appearances. The first is that they are hitting these shots off of batting practice and don’t have the added exit velocity from pitches that are faster. Alonso has only appeared in two home run derbys and leads all competitors in the event's history with 131 home runs. The first home run hit at the stadium was by first baseman Willie Stargell, and it went 506 feet in 1965. Seager also has the most experience playing at Dodger Stadium, which could give him an edge. Eight of the best mashers from yesterday, today and tomorrow will battle in today's Home Run Derby from Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles, California.
It is tempting to pick Seager to win here to take the Home Run Derby in front of the Dodgers’ faithful. Subsequently, that is why he is my pick to win this year’s Home Run Derby. Can he come out of nowhere and become the third rookie to not just win the Home Derby, but also provide the longest home run? Additionally, he won the Home Run Derby by defeating Salvador Perez in Round 1, Juan Soto in Round 2, and Trey Mancini in Round 3. Last year, Pete Alonso came into this derby having won the previous contest in 2019 (there was no Home Run Derby in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic). Alonso went on to take the 2021 Home Run Derby becoming back-to-back champions. However, none of the eight can hit that far unless the park is Coors Field. Schwarber has the power to destroy the ball.

Holiday was MLB.com’s No. 2-rated prospect and joins a growing list of second generation players in the league. Soto Says No to Nats Offer, Open for Trade: Washington’s All-Star outfielder rejected a 15-year, $440-million deal that would have made him the highest paid player in league history. Oddly enough, the last two teams to win the big game hosted it at their own stadium (Buccaneers, 2021; Rams, 2022), a rarity that hadn’t happened before in league history. “Alonso has dominated this event for the past two years and is only the third player to win back-to-back HR derbies. “Soto hit 46 homers last year before being eliminated by Alonso, and one of those homers was 520 feet–the longest recorded in the Statcast era. “The Bolts have a regular-season win total sitting at 10.5, juiced to the over at odds of -143, and are expected to get off to a hot start as they are favored in six of their first seven games.”

And unless he runs into Schwarber in the championship, he'll have the advantage of hitting second in each round. He was built for Derbies, able to get into a rhythm and reel off 10 home runs in barely a minute's time, if necessary. The everyday baseball fans know about the Mariners' star outfielder, of course, but there will be substantially more eyes on him during the Derby than there have been at any point thus far in the regular season. There were none last year, but both Alonso and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. put on one heck of a show in 2019, two years after Aaron Judge won the 2017 Derby as a rookie. In fact, the No. 1 seed hasn't even advanced out of the first round since 2016. He isn't the best in the field in either category, but he's tied for fifth in the majors in the former and ranks top-20 in the latter. Despite clubbing two home runs in Saturday's victory over Detroit, Jo-Ram isn't exactly storming into the Derby with a head of steam. In fact, Rodriguez is a rookie on the league-minimum salary of $700,000, so he stands to more than double his 2022 earnings if he can catch fire Monday night. But Pujols has more career home runs at Dodger Stadium (17) than the rest of the non-Seager field combined (13). He's at least familiar with the dimensions. And that sparked a second-half surge in which his 20 home runs were good for second-most in the NL. The more common outcome is the hometown player getting immediately bounced in the first round. And while it's not quite the same as all of the "first since Babe Ruth" footnotes that pop up anytime Shohei Ohtani does something incredible, being in a two-person club with Junior sure would be something.

The T-Mobile Home Run Derby is happening tonight! The field features a downright electric mix of young and old, power and skill, past, present and future.
But this is his first Derby, and his first All-Star Game, and really his first everything. Seager got off to a slow start this year, but no one remembers that now: He’s got 21 homers and is on quite a roll. Ramírez has resisted being in the Derby in the past, but this could be the sort of high-profile event that may finally get the rest of the baseball world to realize just how great he truly is. And he’s been hitting the ball a lot harder in the days heading into the All-Star Game: He’s hot right now. Seager was the last addition to the Derby, his first since his Rookie of the Year campaign in 2016. His slugging percentage is lower than it has been during any season of his career, and he still might not be 100 percent recovered from the knee injury that cost him most of last season (and part of this one). Acuña is electric, but I’m not sure he’s a high-priority pick here. First off: It’s awesome that Rodríguez is a part of this. It’s awesome that he’s a part of this All-Star Game at all. In retrospect, it’s a travesty that Schwarber has only been in one of these. Was Alonso invented solely for the Home Run Derby? Mets fans who have been enjoying Alonso leading them to a first-place team at the All-Star break may disagree, but from the outside, Alonso has everything you’d want: Prodigious power, obviously, but also swagger, showmanship, consistency (you have to do it for three rounds after all) and a clear understanding of the moment. Schwarber made the finals in 2018, losing by one homer to current teammate Bryce Harper. But as good as that version of Schwarber was, this one is better. The field features a downright electric mix of young and old, power and skill, past, present and future.
