Red Sox left-hander Chris Sale suffered a fractured pinkie on his pitching hand when he was struck by a comebacker in the first inning against the Yankees.

The 33-year-old Sale was making his second start since returning from a fractured rib that cost him the first three months of the season. Sale screamed out in pain, immediately came off the field holding up his injured hand and was replaced by Hirokazu Sawamura. The Red Sox announced later Sunday that Sale has a left fifth finger fracture. Despite the mounting injuries to the rotation, the club began today’s game 48-44, just one game behind the Blue Jays for playoff spot. The lefty also underwent Tommy John surgery in 2020, missing all of that season and most of the 2021 campaign. He missed the first few months of the season due to a stress fracture in his rib cage. After months of rehab and getting himself back into game shape, he’s now had the incredible bad luck to be struck on his pitching hand and suffering yet another injury. While the extent of the injury won’t be known until testing is done, the television broadcast showed obvious damage to the hand, with Sale immediately leaving the field without hesitation. 2:20pm: The Red Sox announced to reporters, including Chris Cotillo of MassLive, that Sale’s pinky finger is broken.

Chris Sale Leaves Game After Getting Hit in Pinky By Line Drive vs ... (Sports Illustrated)

Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale prematurely exited his second start of the season Sunday after getting hit in his left pinky by a line drive against the Yankees.

Sale, who missed all of the 2020 season due to Tommy John surgery, allowed zero runs on three hits in five innings pitched in Boston’s 3–2 loss to Tampa Bay. Sale’s injury adds another frustrating setback for the Sox ace in what only was his second appearance of the season. The devastating injury occurred in the bottom of the first inning after Yankees outfielder Aaron Hicks drilled the left-hander’s 87 mph changeup, sending it flying back toward the mound at an exit velocity of 106.7 mph.

By LARRY FLEISHER Associated Press. NEW YORK (AP) - A fast glance at his finger told Red Sox lefty Chris Sale, sadly, all he needed to know.

It's just so unfortunate that he didn't even get a foothold before it happened," he said. The 33-year-old Sale was making his second start since returning from a fractured rib. Luck — both good and bad — is part of the game. Toni Nadal, coach and uncle of Rafa, once said of del Potro: “He has been the one who has had the most bad luck in tennis because he has been playing with problems for many years.” Or who remembers Mark Prior, the onetime Cubs ace who electrified baseball with his hard-throwing right arm, a standout 2003 season followed by full shoulder reconstruction and retirement by age 33. Sale could commiserate with the Mets’ Jacob deGrom, whose back-to-back Cy Young seasons of 2019-20 have been followed by nothing but heartbreak. It’s just [expletive] after [expletive] after [expletive]. It’s just more [expletive] to deal with. “I just want to play baseball . . . But this is par for the course for me. “Hopefully there’s nothing that’s going to take him out for a long, long time.” Sale is the king of bad luck. Sale’s $145 million, five-year contract extension in 2019 is a complete bust. Prior to that, Sale missed three-quarters of the 2021 season and the entirety of 2020 while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. To recap: Sale was making just his second start of the season after suffering a stress fracture in his right rib cage during an off-site offseason workout. Seriously, is there a player in recent memory whose run of bad luck has been longer and more sustained than what Sale has faced these past two-plus years?

But there has to be a limit, doesn’t there? Optics, let’s be clear, are not a primary driver of team behavior around here, at least when it comes to teambuilding. Seems to check a lot of the same boxes the potent-but-injured Kyle Schwarber did a year ago, given what was available then. Their big chip is Bogaerts, but it’s not as though he’s any more of a long-term acquisition than Martinez would be. Two years ago, the Red Sox wrangled Nick Pivetta and Connor Seabold from the Phillies for Heath Hembree and Brandon Workman, neither of whom are in the majors right now. A back-and-forth battle with as many as seven teams for three wild-card slots in which nothing is promised?

Chris Sale Undergoes Finger Surgery, Could Still Return This Season (MLB Trade Rumors)

The Red Sox have announced that Chris Sale “underwent an open reduction and internal fixation of a left fifth finger proximal phalanx fracture” today.

While the club believes Sale can still return at some point, they may have to operate under the assumption that his season is done, at least from a rotation perspective. Yesterday, Sale had to leave his start against the Yankees without getting out of the first inning after a comebacker struck his pitching hand, clearly injuring it. That means it would be late August before Sale can even begin to throw bullpen sessions, which wouldn’t leave him much time to go on a rehab assignment and get himself back into game shape, especially when considering he had just returned from a different injury.
