I get to have golf in my life and competitive golf in my life on a scale that is fun, exciting, different, and lets me play and compete but still do the things outside that I want to do. “I made the right decision for me. As for Woods’ pointed criticism of LIV on Tuesday, Mickelson said “I certainly respect his opinion. I think I'm going to play really well the next few days. As great as this game has been to me, to be able to come here to the home (of golf) and compete again — I think this is my sixth one here. It just doesn't. I let a few strokes slide today, but for the most part, I actually feel pretty good with parts, but I've just got to bring them together to make the whole. Just the greatness of it kind of shines. It was really special to play here in all the different conditions. Same for Greg Norman, the two-time Open champion and CEO of LIV Golf who was not invited to the festivities. I don't know if you guys remember the Dunhill Cup, but I ended up being a part of the winning Dunhill Cup in '96 with Steve Stricker and Mark O'Meara. And we had all these rounds and different weather conditions. “We decided that we didn't want the distraction. We both kind of agreed that it would be best if I didn't.’’

British Open 2022: Phil Mickelson says he's 'ecstatic.' His demeanor ... (GolfDigest.com)

Still facing questions about his defection from the PGA Tour, Phil Mickelson is looking to change the narrative.

“On half of the holes I have to contend with that. I get to have golf in my life and competitive golf in my life on a scale that is fun, exciting and different. I've got a nice trip lined up after this and things that I haven't been able to do in the past. I think I'm going to play really well the next few days. That lets me play and compete but still do the things outside that I want to do. His face and eyes carry a world-weary aspect that was never there before the word “LIV” appeared in Mickelson’s life. Mickelson, for all that so many disapprove of his high-profile involvement in the Saudi-backed LIV Golf series, was at least spared such obvious contempt. Which is not to say an early tee-time far from the featured groups wasn’t a less-than subtle message sent to such a high-profile player, the second-best American of his generation. Which was a long way from what Tom Lehman endured at the 1999 Dunhill Cup. Two weeks after the 1996 Open champion led the infamous charge across the 17th green at Brookline during the Ryder Cup, his first-tee introduction was met with a stony and clearly point-making silence. Unshaven, dressed all in (logo-free) black and wearing his now familiar dark glasses, Mickelson could have passed for the anti-hero in some long forgotten film noire. No posing with the other Champion Golfers of the Year for the traditional photograph in front of the R&A clubhouse. Moving right along, what was never in doubt was the 52-year old’s ability to tee-up in an Open over the Old Course for a sixth time.

Phil Mickelson must know questions about his controversial relationship with LIV Golf aren't going to let up anytime soon.

The Media Is Getting to Phil Mickelson, and It's Just Too Bad (Sports Illustrated)

Also in Traina Thoughts: Must-see MLB in-game interview; Marlins player loses tooth in the middle of a play; Shaq and Luka party in Croatia and much more.

Telling people to “let it go” just ensures that they will continue on that line of questioning to make you sweat. 3. Marlins shortstop Miguel Rojas lost a tooth in the middle of a play at second base last night. 2. This in-game interview conducted by SNY reporter Steve Gelbs with a Cubs fan about a cup snake is a must-watch. He should also be happy because LIV’s money allowed him to clear up whatever financial issues he had from allegedly making a few too many wagers. If reporters see an athlete starting to crack, that’s a win for the reporters. And it seems Phil Mickelson is starting to crack.

It's also the first time since 2013 the four-time majors winner hasn't posted at least one top-10 finish in a major tournament. Mickelson has now missed the cut in both of the major tournaments he played this year. I want to thank this place for all the memories it has given me, and to the fans today for having the walk up 18 be added to that list. Collin Morikawa posted scores of 72-73 to finish one-over par. Although I am disappointed to be heading home, I had an incredible week at St Andrews celebrating 150 years of history and the game we love. Phil Mickelson (five over par) and Brooks Koepka (four over) will miss the cut at the year's final major tournament.

Per ESPN, he's only the third golfer to miss all major cuts the year after winning a major. 2022 has been an eventful year for Phil Mickelson to say the least. Tiger Woods isn't the only golf legend who had a rough day at St Andrews this week.

Phil Mickelson's trip to St. Andrews ended in a whimper (Golf.com)

Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods both missed the cut at the Open Championship, but only one was sent off with a standing ovation.

He talked about how “it felt the whole tournament was right there,” on 18, as he tapped in for a finishing bogey. He went deep on his emotions, about how much respect he felt from Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas as he passed them in the fairway. In past years, he’s paused to take photos on the bridge or, at the very least look up as he was cheered on. Mickelson ducked in line behind Lucas Herbert and his caddie, on and off the bridge in an instant. Woods, by comparison, posed for photos on the bridge all week, including a solo pic with Jack Nicklaus. That picture will be printed in the World Golf Hall of Fame, if it hasn’t already. Same for the photos of Woods walking up 18 Friday afternoon. He has now played two PGA Tour events this year, missing the cut in both. He is part of the reason why the R&A seems set on changing its exemption categories before staging the Open next summer. ST. ANDREWS, Scotland — As Tiger Woods made his special walk up the 18th hole Friday at the Old Course, Phil Mickelson was as far away as he could conceivably be. Woods essentially made that trek on his own (out of respect from his playing partners), his hat in his right hand, held high in the sky. Mickelson will be 60, the age most of the game’s legends tend to take a final lap at the Open Championship. Has he considered his final lap, or is that wildly premature? Thousands of others on the adjacent street, pinned up against the fence.
