Commissioners from PGA to NFL took pandemic pay cuts, but ... (The Athletic)

Little of sports leaders' compensation is paid in salary, but instead in incentives, bonuses and benefits packages.

And under Monahan in 2020, the PGA was one of the first to return after society all but shut down in March of that year. When Korn Ferry wrote its report in 2018, the sports CEO pay structure was stacked up against their peers atop the media conglomerates and found largely the structures were similar. “The commissioner’s compensation is determined by the Management Development and Compensation Committee of the PGA TOUR Policy Board,” Price wrote in an email. Similarly, just under $620,000 of Price’s package is salary, with the remaining bonus and retirement benefits. According to the tax return, revenues slipped from $1.54 billion to $1.16 billion. Monahan is paid less in total than the big sports league commissioners, though as a percentage of revenue he is likely at the top. A review of the tour’s tax return filed for 2020 shows Monahan is actually credited with earning $14.1 million, by far the largest package he has received in his tenure — Dustin Johnson was the only golfer on tour who made more that year. Media reports about MLB commissioner Rob Manfred taking a pay cut in 2020 pegged his pay at $11 million, though a source said he is now earning at least twice that. But what they did not say is that little of their compensation is paid in salary, but instead in incentives, bonuses and benefits packages like retirement accounts. In the early days of the pandemic, leaders of major sports organizations from the NFL and MLB to the PGA Tour announced they would take pay cuts. Goodell’s first deal in 2006 was structured this way, Hughes said, and the packages have just become more incentive-laden since (in 2017, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones rallied against his commissioner’s next contract, which made the current deal even more incentive-reliant). Other PGA Tour executives earned healthy seven figures in 2020, including Ron Price, chief operating officer, who is listed on the tax form as earning $8.6 million.

The landscaping changes this summer are the start of a two-year restoration project overseen by architect Tim Liddy.

He added that some of the trees being removed will be replaced by younger and smaller trees Liddy said he’s been talking to architect Lee Schmidt, who worked for Dye on a daily basis on projects including the Stadium Course, about other issues, including vegetation that was grown between holes but has since been removed from the course. It’s all so he can help maintain the intent of Dye’s original and radical design. Subscribe to The Desert Sun. “That was part of the mandate. More than three decades of growth also meant the trees were causing turf issues that didn’t happen when the course was young and the trees were newly planted. Chris May, director of agronomy for PGA West, said that while original plans called for 600 trees to be removed, the actual number will be closer to 200 trees, with around 1,200 remaining on the course. In the summer of 2023, the work will focus on an aging irrigation system as well as taking bunkers and greens back to their original sizes and shapes. Archival photos also reveal where trees had been added to the course through the years. The course will be open as usual after fall overseeding and will again be used in The American Express for the eighth consecutive year next January before the restoration work continues next summer. So the bunkers need to be put back the way they were. While Liddy has been the head of his own design firm, Liddy and Associates, since 1993, he worked closely with Dye on many projects.

One specific question asks if the Saudi Arabian government “encouraged” any member of the administration to begin the investigation. In that case, the Federal Trade Commission ultimately decided to not take action against them. All LIV tournaments feature $25 million dollar purses and guaranteed payouts, not to mention contracts upwards of $150 million. According to a Monday post in the Wall Street Journal, the issue that seems to be at the heart of the investigation, is the PGA Tour’s refusal to allow its members to participate in LIV events and its subsequent banning of any players who crossed tour lines.

The tour is also armed with a bevy of defenses against assertions of antitrust wrongdoing. They include: golfers voluntarily agreed to follow tour rules; courts granting private membership associations latitude in applying rules; and the argument that the tour’s system of competition is arguably pro-consumer and pro-golfer, since it is popular with fans and lucrative for golfers. Antitrust cases can take years, generate sizable legal fees and necessitate the hiring of pricey experts. The tour, a golfer could argue, has violated antitrust law or, by denying releases, misapplied its own rules. Politically, the timing is hard to ignore. The DOJ has questioned players’ agents as it studies the controversy.
