Alex Murdaugh Is Expected to Be Charged With Killing Wife and Son ... (The New York Times)

Mr. Murdaugh, who comes from a powerful legal family in rural South Carolina, has already faced a wave of fraud and theft charges since the killings last ...

Ms. Beach’s family had sued the Murdaughs, and their lawyer had been trying to force Alex Murdaugh to provide details about his finances before his wife and son were killed. Mr. Murdaugh has also been charged with stealing millions of dollars from clients and other people, including from the family of a housekeeper for the Murdaugh family who died after falling on the steps of their home early one morning in 2018. The state police opened an investigation into the death of Ms. Satterfield and, last month, said they planned to exhume her body. The law firm founded by his ancestors reported that Mr. Murdaugh had been stealing money from the firm and fired him, after which, the police said, he concocted a bizarre scheme to have one of his distant cousins shoot him on a deserted road. But no one had been formally accused in the deaths of Maggie Murdaugh, 52, and Paul Murdaugh, 22, who were fatally shot at the family’s rural hunting estate in Islandton, about 65 miles west of Charleston. A spokeswoman for the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, which has been investigating the case, would not confirm the lawyer’s account.

The killings of Alex Murdaugh's wife, Maggie, 52, and son, Paul, 22, are being investigated by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

Police arrested Curtis Edward Smith of Walterboro, S.C., on charges of assisted suicide, assault and battery of a high aggravated nature, pointing and presenting a firearm, insurance fraud and conspiracy to commit insurance fraud. Murdaugh later announced that he was entering rehab to confront an opioid addiction. In addition to being accused of killing his family, authorities also allege he was part of a multimillion-dollar insurance fraud scheme. “He said, ‘Come as fast as you can. “My wife and child have been shot badly. Since November, 15 state grand jury indictments containing 79 charges have come down against Murdaugh, who prosecutors say defrauded $8.4 million from victims.

We won't have any comment until charges are actually brought against Alex." I am aware that SLED advised the family that they intend to seek murder indictments against him from a grand jury later this week. John Marvin Murdaugh told The Hampton County Guardian that agents with the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) met with family members early Tuesday "as a courtesy" to inform them that they intended to charge Alex Murdaugh in connection with the double homicide of Margaret Branstetter Murdaugh and Paul Terry Murdaugh. The state intends to seek criminal charges against suspended attorney Richard "Alex" Murdaugh in connection with the 2021 double homicide of his wife and younger son, according to Alex Murdaugh's younger brother, John Marvin Murdaugh.

State police have informed the Murdaugh family that they plan to bring charges against disgraced attorney Alex Murdaugh in the June 2021 double murder of ...

In addition, SLED has opened an investigation into the unsolved death of 19-year-old Stephen Smith, whose body was found with blunt-force head trauma on a Hampton County road in July 2015. A state grand jury was empaneled last year to investigate how officers investigated the boat crash after records highlighted missteps by law enforcement and questions surfaced about a possible attempt to shift blame away from Paul Murdaugh. That left Murdaugh family members frustrated that they didn’t know more about what led to the deaths. What’s more, his own attorneys acknowledged that the episode had followed Murdaugh being pushed out of his family’s legacy law firm after money had been discovered missing. In some instances, Murdaugh channeled settlement money to a fake “Forge” bank account he created to mimic an Atlanta-based firm that manages client investments from legal payouts, according to indictments. Rumors became rampant in the void of information. He also is accused of helping Murdaugh siphon money from his legal clients. But investigators soon discounted his version of events and charged Murdaugh with trying to orchestrate his own murder as part of a $10 million insurance fraud scheme. Alex Murdaugh also worked part time for the 14th Circuit Solicitor’s Office. And the family’s powerhouse law firm made a fortune over the years through civil litigation against railroads, multinational companies and other deep-pocket targets. In all, Murdaugh has been accused of stealing almost $8.5 million from former clients and colleagues. Authorities say the former attorney was shot by former client Curtis Smith, who Murdaugh’s lawyers have described as his personal drug dealer. The law enforcement agency plans to present its evidence to a grand jury this week and did not mention any other suspects, he said.

Currently charged along with Murdaugh for financial crimes are suspended attorney Cory Fleming, former banker Russell Laffitte, and a Colleton County man, Curtis Edward Smith. Smith is also charged with Murdaugh in connection with narcotics charges. According to a spokesperson for the S.C. Attorney General's Office, murder trials are generally held in the county where the crime happened unless a judge grants a change of venue. SLED is also tasked with investigating serious crimes all around the state, which compounds matters. In other high-profile cases, jury pools have been selected from outside of the jurisdiction. Harvey placed the time of death between 9 and 9:30 p.m. Soon after the killings, SLED issues a statement saying that there is no danger to the public. I am aware that SLED advised the family that they intend to seek murder indictments against him from a grand jury later this week. It is unclear, however, what Murdaugh's actual punishment will be if convicted or if additional charges are to be added. The USA TODAY Network will continue digging deeper and share more official information as it becomes available. Murdaugh lived a seemingly perfect life of wealth and luxury, dividing his time between the family's primary estate and its Edisto beach house. - Members of the Murdaugh family, vilified by some in the public following Beach’s death, appeared on Good Morning America on June 17 pleading for help, stating that Paul had received death threats. We’re just regular people, and we are hurting just like they would be hurting if it had happened to them.” SLED would not confirm if this was related to the homicides.
