Buck Supermoon 2022: How to see July's full Moon (BBC Science Focus Magazine)

July welcomes the second supermoon of the year, but when exactly can you see the Buck Moon? Which constellation will it appear in? And what's the best time to ...

When the Moon reaches perigee at the same time as a full Moon, we get a supermoon and the Moon appears larger in the sky. The next blue Moon will occur in August 2023, next year. This effect is amplified further when the Moon is on the horizon, like it is this month, thanks to the Moon illusion. However, because the lunar cycle takes a little under one calendar month, we sometimes get 13 full Moons in a year. Supermoons are categorised when the Moon is at 360,000km (or less) away from Earth in its orbital path, and we'll often see two or three full supermoons in a row. At its closest approach in this lunar cycle, the Moon will pass a mere 357,272km away from Earth.

The Buck Moon on July 13 will coincide with a supermoon, marking the third one of 2022. Here's everything to know.

It's named after a fish called a sturgeon, which was readily caught during that time of year in the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain. Lunar lookers should step out to spot it when it rises above the horizon later in the evening. Known as the Buck Moon, July's full moon is set to rise on Wednesday, July 13. July's Buck Moon will reach its peak illumination at 5:00 a.m. ET on July 13, but won't turn full until nine hours and 37 minutes later. July's Buck Moon is simultaneously a supermoon because of its close proximity to Earth, appearing bigger and brighter than an average full moon. They also called this the Thunder Moon because of early summer's frequent thunderstorms."

Sky watchers are in for a special summer treat this week when a “supermoon” lights up the night sky.

The Buck Moon is one of a handful of supermoons that will occur this year. According to the Farmer’s Almanac, the moon is known as the Full Buck Moon because the antlers of male deer, or bucks, are in full-growth mode at this time of the year. It is also known as the Thunder Moon due to prevalence of thunderstorms during the month.

The full moon names used by the Old Farmer’s Almanac come from a number of places, including Native American, Colonial American and European sources. Mead is created by fermenting honey mixed with water, sometimes adding fruits, spices, grains, or hops. Supermoons have become more popular over the last few decades. Europeans call this the hay moon for the haymaking in June and July, NASA said. A supermoon occurs when a full moon falls near or on perigee, which means the full moon coincides with the point in orbit in which the moon is closest to Earth, according to AccuWeather.com. As a result, the moon can appear to be up to 14% larger and 30% brighter during a supermoon, but it’s very hard to spot the difference. This month’s supermoon — which is called the buck moon in July — will be the biggest and brightest supermoon of the year.

A 'supermoon' is about to make its closest approach to Earth of 2022 ... (The Philadelphia Inquirer)

This week the moon will be a mere 222089 miles from Earth, and will look close enough to touch when it rises.

The “dark side” of the moon is an Earth-centric concept. If the moon were boxing with the universe, the fight would have been stopped billions of year ago. But in real life, the entire moon is covered by a rubble pile of charcoal-gray, powdery dust that would gag a billion dust-busters. Scientists believe the moon had a rough birth, formed from a chunk of Earth broken off during a collision with a Mars-size object maybe four billion years ago. The visual difference in the moon’s size when it rises will be dramatically evident. It comes up at 6:50 p.m. Tuesday, and 8:01 p.m. Wednesday. It will still be close to full Thursday, but rising later. That moment occurs at 5:06 a.m. Wednesday, and the moon will reach fullness about 9½ hours later. Don’t be surprised to see nuisance coastal flood advisories this week. The moon gets sun all around. Minted by an astrologer in 1979, the term has no technical definition. Probably less than the name implies, say Masters and other astronomers. You likely won’t need moon-glasses, but it will beam its reflective sunlight 30% more brightly, Masters said.
