Chase Elliott slams the door, 'granny' taunts LaJoie, Hamlin ready to ... (Daytona Beach News-Journal)

Was Chase Elliott's block fair game? Corey LaJoie was fine with it, and so was the crowd. Elsewhere, Ross Chastain is wrecking everyone ... again.

"When you got guys like him out there wrecking half the field, you might as well take a different strategy." "You just can't continue to do these type of things." "These are the moments you wish you could bottle up and kind of keep," Chase said. For those who didn't see it, Chastain got into Denny late in the race and sent him spinning to a 25th-place finish. "It's the last lap of the race ... especially in front of Dawsonville's finest," LaJoie continued. Eventually you have to pay for those decisions." "Either go for the win or don't. I'm going to choose option A every day of the week.” "I wish that granny in the front row wouldn't have been clapping so much." That's the advantage of the being the leader." That would be three in a row! "He's going to have to clean these things up," Burton said in the NBC booth. "When you're a kid and you're racing on the quarter-mile over there you look at this big track and it's just out of reach ... your heroes are out there competing on this big track, and that's just not real."

When I get myself in that position again, I’ll be a little more prepared and hopefully we can do a little better job and be the one that control the blocks as opposed to the one that’s trying to make that late-race move because that guy usually is in the catbird seat.” They might go right for you some and they might not, and I don’t really know how you know what’s going to happen next to be able to make that choice.” “I was able to defend the bottom side block and I felt more comfortable defending more aggressively up to the top. “I hate to throw a mega block like that,” said Elliott. “I had kind of shied away from that big block throughout the day. I don’t know how you know exactly what choice to make in that situation. However, the road to victory—especially on a track designed with superspeedway racing in mind—is paved with wrecked cars and aggressive moves.

I wanted to be here and I wanted to be successful, but when you start having days like that, days like this, it just makes you really appreciate it. I don’t feel like I deserve it. It makes me feel grateful for where I am and the opportunities I’ve had. You watch that from afar, you appreciate it, but until you start competing here and feeling a bigger connection with the fans, people before the race, when you feel that connection and vibe, you want to do well. LaJoie, who finished 21st after the wreck, sought out Elliott to congratulate him after the race. “He did exactly what he needed to do. “Much like the championship, checking that mark and joining my dad on that list, it’s a really proud moment for me,” Chase said. I just felt like we’re racing for a win here in Atlanta and I might not have this opportunity again so might want to throw one and hope for the best.” Proud to be from Georgia and hopefully made the folks who’ve supported us over the years proud. He swept the first two stages and took the lead again with two laps remaining to secure the victory. ... These are moments you wish you could bottle up and keep. ... This crowd, the stars aligned for us today.

“The way the fans, the way the Atlanta Braves organization and the University of Georgia have all just kept me as part of the family is really special and meaningful to me,” Elliott said. It only got worse for Chastain once he and Denny Hamlin made contact for the second time in a month. It looked like a racing deal, a bump draft gone wrong -- which is typical at these types of pack races. It ensures a finish under green and puts unfair calls of favoritism to rest (Elliott is NASCAR's Most Popular Driver). But there's a touch of inconsistency in how yellow flags get officiated at the finish. Once again, all eyes were on Ross Chastain after a series of incidents marred his second-place Atlanta finish. They can stay conservative in throwing the yellow that late in the race but in cases where they have to? "He made a good block, and the siren's ringing in Dawsonville [Elliott's hometown], unfortunately." Green: Big Surprises -- Pack races usually bring out the best in mid-pack teams and Atlanta was no different. Leading a race-high 96 laps, he wasn't going to let this opportunity slip -- not with the crowd behind him and that Dawsonville Pool Room siren a short 90-minute drive away. Speeding Ticket: Finishing Under Yellow -- I understand why NASCAR threw the caution as LaJoie wrecked coming off turn 2. "But I wouldn't have changed a thing." As for LaJoie? Well, 21st is nowhere close to how the No. 7 challenged up front, 19 laps led almost doubling his career total.

“Hats off to Chevrolet and Trackhouse for bringing this fast of a Jockey Chevrolet to be able to come back. This is obviously home for me and home to a lot of great fans who made a lot of noise today. The pair have had run-ins previously this season and Hamlin, whose car was badly damaged, was not happy after the race. With 27 lead changes among 12 drivers and 13 caution periods, it was an eventful day on the newly reconfigured and re-paved Atlanta Motor Speedway’s 1.54-mile track. Chase Elliott is a former NASCAR Cup Series champion and currently the 2022 title leader. Obviously disappointed not to earn the victory, but not disheartened, LaJoie said he was encouraged by the No. 7 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet team’s work on Sunday and boosted by the confidence of being in position to win late in a race.
