F1 Austrian Grand Prix 2022 results: Leclerc holds off Verstappen to ... (Sporting News AU)

Reigning Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen started on pole for the 2022 Austrian Grand Prix, but was unable to hold onto P1 as Charles Leclerc of ...

It all got a bit heated between Leclerc and Sainz in the early laps of yesterday’s race with some intense on-track battling which allowed the Dutchman to escape down the road. Lap 24: So to recap, Leclerc leads from Sainz, Verstappen and Hamilton. Leclerc did overtake Verstappen on track but then the Red Bull driver pitted for his hard tyres. Here, he'll be attempting to win his fourth Austrian GP from five attempts this afternoon which would make him the most successful driver at this event in history. Lap 10: Leclerc makes a huge dive on Verstappen at turn three but the Dutch driver just about stays infront of his championship rival for now. Lap 58: SAINZ IS OUT!!! His car is on fire and he's forced to pull over at the side of the track. Lap 55: Leclerc once again leads the Austrian Grand Prix as he overtakes Verstappen at turn three! The Mercedes man does well to defend at corner three but then the Dutchman flies past him down the straight to corner four. Sainz is almost engulfed in the flames as it quickly takes hold of his car which then starts to roll back towards the track. He has 3.6 seconds to make up on Leclerc but he could just run out of time in this race to steal the win away. It's currently a Ferrari lockout at the front in P1 and P2. The Dutch driver may just run out of laps as Leclerc struggles with throttle problems. That won't be any consolation to Perez, though, who now drops down to third in the World Drivers' Championship standings following Leclerc's victory.

The Mercedes driver's race was notable for an entertaining dice with both Haas cars and then a DRS pass on Esteban Ocon. Vettel too was reprimanded by 5s as part of a litany of track limits penalties dished out through the field. But he was placed on a two-stop strategy rather than three and delivered a remarkable surge up the order from ninth. On lap 33, Leclerc closed within DRS range of Verstappen before another cleanly decided move for first place at Turn 3. At the end of lap 58, Leclerc used the slower conditions to stop for mediums and was followed by Verstappen for the run to the line. Sainz was then about to demote Verstappen for a Ferrari 1-2 but on the run to Turn 4, running in the Red Bull's wake, a wisp of smoke started to waft out of his engine cover.

Sainz was right on Verstappen’s tail but on Lap 57, the Ferrari driver slowed and pulled off the track. Verstappen tried to hit back on Lap 13, locking up into Turn 4, and soon complied with the message to box, pitting for hards at the end of the lap. I had this problem with the throttle and it would get stuck at 20 or 30% throttle in the low speed, so it was very tricky but we managed to make it stick until the end and I'm so, so happy. Ferrari are on a roll, Red Bull still however in the lead of both championships. The Dane pitted but Schumacher stayed out, the Red Bull of Verstappen in his mirrors before blasting past on the run to Turn 3 on the next tour. The reigning champion radioed to say that the car was “unpredictable” as he stared down a 1.5 second deficit to the Monegasque – aiming to protect a four-second advantage on Sainz. With Lewis Hamilton taking too much of the kerb out of Turn 1 on Lap 4, Mick Schumacher blazed past for P7 and had eyes on his Haas team mate up ahead. Ocon edged ahead but lost out to the Briton entering Turn 3 on the following lap. With Sainz right on Verstappen’s tail, the Spaniard suddenly slowed – the fire at the rear of his Ferrari signalling the end of his race. George Russell was a distant fourth having started there, the Mercedes driver losing time in his first pit stop – a five-second penalty also tacked on as he collided with Red Bull's Sergio Perez early on. Leclerc took his second stop on Lap 51 and retook the lead on Lap 53. With Sainz challenging Verstappen for P2, the Dutchman pitted again on Lap 37.

Charles Leclerc won the Austrian Grand Prix after holding off a challenge from Red Bull rival Max Verstappen.

LAP 51/71 - SAINZ ALSO PITS - Sainz has also come in for hards, and drops back into P3. Verstappen leads, but Leclerc has now closed the gap to under a second! LAP 53/71 - LECLERC RETAKES THE LEAD! - Leclerc gets past Verstappen down the back straight into Turn 4! LAP 49/71 - LECLERC PITS AGAIN! - The one-stop strategy has not worked for Ferrari as Leclerc pits from the lead! LAP 12/71 - LECLERC TAKES THE LEAD! - What a brilliant overtake to silence the 60,000 Dutch fans! His fresher tyres, which are 12 laps better off than Verstappen’s, do the trick, and the Ferrari eases past and goes back into the lead. The Red Bull driver came in for a fresh set of harder tyres a lap later as a result, and emerged back out in P8. It looks like Perez left Russell enough room, and the Mercedes hit the Red Bull mid-corner in Turn 4, causing the Red Bull to spin into the gravel. Then, disaster struck Ferrari on Lap 57, as Sainz, who was on track to get past Verstappen to secure a Ferrari one-two finish, pulled off the track down the back straight with an engine failure. Verstappen's advantage did not last long, though, as on Lap 33, Leclerc made up the six second gap to the Red Bull to ease past down into Turn 3. Hamilton may count himself lucky that he was able to capitalise on some misfortune elsewhere on the grid. Despite the problems, Leclerc dealt with them to cross the line to take his fourth Formula 1 victory. Russell, who had the inside line, forced Perez around the outside of the corner, but the lack of room for the Mexican meant that the drivers made contact, resulting in the Red Bull spinning out into the gravel.

I think he was just a bit too keen, ran into me, and I was off in the gravel. “Nicholas suffered with some floor damage early in the race, which cost him a lot of downforce and made the car very difficult to drive. “The whole race we were more or less matching the McLarens, we hit a bit of traffic here and there but I was really happy with our pace and we’ve definitely made a step forward this weekend. “I was hoping for points today, that was the target, and it’s a bit disappointing to be finishing just outside the top ten. The pace in the car was reasonable and we got the points that we wanted, so happy in the end. We looked strong yesterday, but today we spent the first part of the race stuck in a train and then struggled with the hard tyre. Big thanks to everyone for working so hard at the track and back home, we made a good recovery from Friday to score some decent points." "I had a bit of an engine issue all race so I was just praying to God that it wouldn’t blow up, which it didn’t, so I’m super thankful for that so I could finish the race without a problem. As a team, we are heading in the right direction and we have good momentum before heading to Paul-Ricard, one of the team's home races, and of course mine too. We had a lot of damage to the car and we were going nowhere so we had to retire. Quite soon I felt it wasn’t going to be a one-stop race just because of the way the tires were behaving – the winds were very different and difficult to manage. To score a single point on this race is a bit of a shame, but we can be very happy with our overall pace and performance as a team.”

F1 Austrian Grand Prix Wrap: Leclerc Passes Verstappen Three ... (Autoweek)

Charles Leclerc claimed his first F1 victory in three months, beating Max Verstappen, while Haas had its best Formula 1 event in four years.

I was angry, I stayed angry, and that helped me get up the field—sometimes angry can be good.” And second became first when Jehan Daruvala was penalized after his team tried to dry his grid spot prior to the start, which is against the rules. "We have glimpses of light at the end of the tunnel with the car - then it disappears again, and we need to get on top of that. It’s hard not to get a little bit down about it but the last two races we’ve been lucky and we’ve had the pace, especially this weekend.” Schumacher cleanly passed Magnussen for position and while they were ultimately split by Lando Norris it meant Schumacher recorded his best Formula 1 finish in sixth. Kevin Magnussen and Mick Schumacher were seventh and ninth respectively in Sprint, giving the Dane two points, though Schumacher was frustrated at being overtaken by Lewis Hamilton after losing the DRS from his team-mate. Now we need to work on the car to close the gap to the teams ahead, then see how we can get in the mix.” Fortunately a marshal intervened and Sainz was unharmed but it was another mechanical setback for Ferrari and for his own ambitions it was a giant comedown off the back of his Silverstone win seven days previously. Red Bull eventually retired him, and that leaves him 57 points behind Verstappen. Despite losing out to Leclerc he still departs Austria, and the mid-point of the 2022 season, with a healthy 38-point advantage over the Ferrari driver in the championship. Turn 3 was very tricky as that’s where you don’t want any more mid-speed corner, mainly slow-speed corners it was tough to manage but we managed to get the car to the end which is great.” It effectively left Leclerc with the throttle still on about 20-30% through the corners, but he was able to keep a charging Verstappen at bay during the closing stages to win by 1.5 seconds

It has been a rough start to the season for Mercedes, who has won the last eight constructor titles, as Hamilton struggled to find a rhythm in this year’s car. I explained to them, if you can come out after the start behind each other, the second one thinks he is faster because you are nine-tenths of a second faster because of the DRS effect. The duo tried to hold off Lewis Hamilton during the Sprint, and Magnussen managed to stay ahead of the Mercedes star. But after the checkered flag, he appeared to encounter an issue of his own as he stopped on the exit of Turn 1. The duo scored a double points finish, and now Alpine and McLaren are tied at 81 points in the constructor standings, trailing Mercedes by a whooping 156 points. “First at pick up and then at the end it would not come back to zero. “I saw in my mirrors that the car was catching [on] fire, but at the same time, I was pressing the brake,” Sainz said in the post-race press conference. Harassment at the Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix Isn't New ... (Jalopnik)

F1 fans attending the Austrian GP experienced catcalling, racial abuse, and more.

It was one thing to be catcalled on the street, where I could dip into a store or rely on the presence of bystanders to protect me. Similarly, no one was quite as outright rude to me in Austin, Montreal, or Miami. There were still people who catcalled or were outright unkind in other ways, but in my experience, those experiences were more isolated and not representative of a large number of people who attended those races. I lost track of how many times I was propositioned in some form or fashion — and I’m only counting the times someone propositioned me in English — to, say, take off my clothes and join them in their hot tub or to expose myself or to just give them a little kiss. During our first day there, I knew that going to the bathroom alone was probably going to be a bad call. Now, I had no idea what they were saying, since my grasp of the German language leaves a lot to be desired, so it was a little easier for me to ignore it. I attended the Austrian Grand Prix back in 2015, where I camped with a group of people who all identified as women, and the problem was evident even back then.

Paddock Diary: 2022 Austrian Grand Prix · RaceFans (RaceFans)

Formula 1 teams responded to reports some fans had suffered harassment and abuse at the Austrian GP by inviting them into the paddock.

F1 needs to make a stand, and attitudes need to change. I was pleased the sport had recognised these claims and had moved swiftly to take action. As I walked in, a group of Verstappen fans shouted over to me, calling me ‘sunshine’. Not thinking much of it as it seemed there was little offence to it I replied, ‘a little early for the beers?’ The demure changed slightly, and they shouted back to me in Dutch, not something I speak. Daniel Ricciardo, ever-smiling, was thrilled to meet the two guests of Aston Martin after I told him she was wearing his t-shirt. His response was strong, and ended with him calling for those involved to “fuck off”, making it clear they aren’t welcome in the sport. I immediately drew back the curtains once again to catch a glimpse of the rolling hills before my journey into the track. Following the sexist comments were a string of stories containing homophobic abuse and racism too. I left behind a crowing cockerel and horses contently whinnying to start my journey into the circuit. Rain overnight meant a chilly start to the day. I can understand the passion of fans, but I cannot understand or condone cheering as a driver smacks into the wall. Look up and there’s a model plane hanging from the ceiling, and look to your left and there’s an AlphaTauri F1 car proudly on display. A refrigerator bearing the logos of a water company was also bore a large drawing of an entirely naked woman.

10 things we learned from the 2022 F1 Austrian GP (autosport.com)

Ferrari crucially delivered a victory in Red Bull's backyard, as Charles Leclerc beat Max Verstappen to the top step at the Austrian Grand Prix.

A request for explanation on this bizarre choice – to say the least – has so far been unreturned by the race promoter. We come to the following event and often the steward in the previous event is not there. This is because laptime gains can be made on the track’s wide kerbs and so the FIA acted according to its stipulations. In both races, he battled with Hamilton – defying the Mercedes brilliantly for 11 laps in a rear-guard sprint action that was evocative of his father’s defence against the then McLaren driver at the Italian GP 11 years earlier. For 2022, the FIA set a clear definition that a white line will always define track limits – with no consideration for kerb usage and other circuit-to-circuit concessions as was previously the case. That Norris got by in any case raises the point of why the officials intervened at one race and not the other. “The main thing that I learned is everybody is human and everybody makes mistakes. The rise means the cap is now $145.5m and while this is a compromise agreement it seems few stakeholders are happy.
